I tried preheating for 1min but then when I went to put my beans in it wouldn't start for a while. Does the machine have to cool down to a certain temperature before it can be started again?

I think the 1/2lb profiles are too short for 225g or less batches. You hit first crack well into the 70% power cycle and then you need to be lucky to hit the second crack before the 100% ramp up. This is only my experience with the Peru and it may change from bean to bean, but if you hit first crack on or around the first power drop you are able to draw out the time until the second crack a bit more.

Better Torque than 240V AC and thay handle more speed variation without the cooling issues of VF Driving 240V AC at very reduced speeds. Some options at Oatley Electronics to look at for 12V.

Play safe whatever you do.

In that vein, you could probably buy a cheap 12V cordless drill or whatever and drive it with a battery charger/battery arrangement and then remote mount the trigger variable speed controller. It would only remain then to suitably mount the Drill and fix a pulley into the chuck of the drill.

I've seen quite a few generic brand variable speed cordless drills around for quite surprisingly low prices so might be worth thinking about....

Mal.

A very "philosophical" question this one, as alluded to by Attilio....

I suspect that if you lined up 10 highly respected roasters and put the question to them individually, you'd probably get 10 different answers... Of which, none would be right or wrong. The suggestion to inquire of the roast-master is by far the best as any decent artisan will know their coffee product to a "tee"....

Mal.

Cupping Room - Australian MTC D10-107 Honey

During the recent banter about the question of the cost of the Australian MTC D10-107 Honey offered during the last green Bean Bay sell-off it was (politely) suggested that the answer was best found in the cup.

The following are my impressions having roasted my 1st batch:

As Andy suggested the green beans were very clean, although bean sizes did vary a bit and it was not as good looking as say the PNG Wahgi AA.

I roasted them to a little past the start of second crack. first crack at 14.40 mins, second crack at 18.43 mins, (about CS9), and kept them sealed up for about 3 days before opening.

What hit me firstly was the aroma of the beans when I broke the seal, and since then everytime I loaded the grinder hopper and ground. In fact I started thinking I was being seduced by the "Honey" in the name, and it was all my imagination, so asked my partner to verify it was not wishful thinking. She smelt it as well. There is a fleeting waft of what I think is Honey every time, and not something I have detected before.

Now my formal "cupping" experience and knowledge is basically zilch, so be kind. My partner drinks only neat espresso's, and she has found it to her liking. Not too acidic or bitter and very smooth, and best of all each shot has been consistently so. So thumbs up from her. (Phew! as some cost justification was required).

I found similiar results with an Espresso. I also had it as a Capuccino and while maybe was a little low on acidity to cut through the milk a bit, it was still excellent, and once again consistent.

Sorry I'm sure expert cupping practices would have found all sorts of berries and other characters. What I found was an excellent experience both before and in the cup.

I probably could fiddle around by blending something slightly more acidic with it for the milk based drinks, or possibly blending with a lighter roast of the same. But think I might just stick with what worked for now, and N'joy the rest.

Graham

Update: I'm now a solid filter re-user. Since my last post I've only used two filters and I make quite a few aeropresses each day. They're tough little buggers, those filters.

Good job those who pointed me the right direction, it's greatly appreciated.

A bit of progress here... the new style Silvia tips are readily available and a lot cheaper than manufacturing the old style ones myself in the quantities we're talking. So it's only the extension piece I need to get made, and the design of the new tips also makes the design of the extension piece slightly simpler.

It remains to be seen whether the price of the finished product is justifiable but we're certainly closer than we were six weeks ago.

Greg
