Mokita Steaming Wand Upgrade.....
Dec 29th, 2005, 2:37am

Hi All,

Sorry to say Sad that the Silvia Wand is not a direct swap replacement for the Mokita's original..... it is simply the wrong shape to work from the same take-off point as the original without some serious surgery, and I'm not really up for that I'm afraid.

What I might do though, is chop the Mokita Wand above the Froth Enhancer Boss and silver solder the bottom section of the Silvia Wand to it, so all is not lost Grin. Will report back when I've done this with piccies, etc.....

Cheers,
Mal.

Bummer that the joints dont match, Mal.

I was hoping to do a similar thing with my Nemox Fenice. If I can remember properly, the Fenice and the Mokita have different wands. I'll post here once I'm back home in Aus in a couple of weeks time.

It's a bummer about 'Plan A' Mal.
Fingers crossed for 'Plan B'

Hi Guys,

Re the Fenice.... from memory, I think the wand take-off point is still the same, even though the wand itself is slightly different. It's this that makes the swap impractical as the bends in the Silvia Wand just do not match up with the height the Mokita's wand starts from, and the hole in the panel for the Wand to exit through. Will be interested to hear what you think once you get back though rice.

Will keep y'all posted re Plan 'B' though,

Cheers,
Mal.

Before y'all go chopping up your Mokita steam wands, you might want to try to get a hold of the fitting from the overpriced thermoblock that Breville is selling; you know; the stainless steel $25 krups?  It looks completely exchangeable with the Silvia steam wand, so it might fit, but it has a swivelling ball joint and is angled like the giotto wand!  Yes, it has a froth aider on it, but this slides right off to reveal a wand that's basically Silvia's, but better.

Cheers,

Luca

Luca, thanks for reminding me about that Breville wand (again), completely forgotten about it.
(all this wand talk...wish a wizardly shazam would change the steam arm)

Sorry, Mal, really should've googled it before:

Breville 800 class: http://www.breville.com.au/products_detail.asp?prod=286

Could only see small pictures online, but you can see that the steam wand has a ball joint.  The froth aider is just a metal tube that slides over the rubber grab tab; quite a clever design, actually.  You can just slide it right off and be left with a wand that looks like a silvia wand, but bent outwards - awesome!  The nut LOOKS exactly the same as the Silvia fitting.

This machine is a real winner, too.  For $400, you get:

800 Class™ Espresso Machine
800ES
From its heavy-duty housing and professional grade functionality through to its superior and easy operation, the 800ES is designed for the true coffee connoisseur.
Features
•        15 bar thermoblock pump system
•        Advanced dual wall crema system
•        Pre brew function
•        Auto purge function
•        Commercial die cast design
•        2.2 litre easy front removable water tank
•        Additional hot water function
•        Commercial swivel steam wand
•        Extra large cup warming plate
•        1 litre capacity drip tray
•        Storage draw
•        Accessories - stainless steel frothing jug, tamping spoon and cleaning tool
•        2 year warranty

Well, damn, I'll get Andrew to cancel the order for the Synesso ... ;P

Krups in fancy pants!

Cheers,

Luca

Thank you kindly Luca,

You're right.... it looks like a very purposeful steaming wand compared to the Mokita's. I'll get in touch with Breville and see if I can buy a Wand Kit from them. Thanks again Smiley,

Mal.

Hi again All,

Hope everyone had a terrific New Year celebration.... bound to be some good stories from some members who may have witnessed unforeseen events Grin

Anyway, so that this thread doesn't become a total loss, I've penned out an Electrical Schematic for my Mokita as part of the effort to tidy up the wiring a bit. It includes detail on my particular PID installation but you can ignore this for the most part, and just substitute the "Brew T/Stat" for the "SSR Power Contact" where it appears near the top of the drawing.

The link to download the PDF file is here...http://tinyurl.com/eswv8.

Hope this is of some help to those Mokita/Nemox Fenice/Quaha owners out there who may need it for future repairs or mod's, etc.

In either case, ALL internal wiring work can only be undertaken with the unit UNplugged from the Mains Power. You'll also have to make sure that you have the work completed, or at the very least inspected by a qualified and licensed Electrician or Electrical Engineer, before plugging it back into the mains. 240 VOLTS CAN KILL!! Shocked

For anyone who is interested, I have a swag of photos of the disassembly and re-assembly of the Mokita too. Just let me know if you'd like copies. Smiley

Notwithstanding the cautionary warning, once again, I hope it proves helpful. All the best,

Mal.

Hey Luca - I've used one of those 800 class breville's.

IMHO they suck.

The best of the worst....
There is no difference between steam warm up, and steam on.  The great design is that you put the "Froth enhancer" in the milk and turn a single switch for steam... then it comes up to speed while the wand is on.... so you get a pittiful amount of pressure that builds up to a pretty bad amount at full crank (but by then you've probably gone well over 70 degrees anyhow!)

Thanks Mal, I'm sure the schematic will come useful to me and others around these parts. Us owners of the Quaha Junior/ Imat Mokita/ Nemox Fenice et al seem to be a rare breed compared to the Silvia mobsters. Greg Pullman has some useful info on his site http://www.coffeetamper.com.au/imat/  I've sent you a PM with my email address, would you be able to forward the images of the disassembly to me?

p.s. If you are using PS (Photoshop), you can automate the signature insertion into the images.

re: Breville 800
I think (hope?!?) Luca was mocking the 800 class. It'd be funny to watch him try to talk someone out of a Synesso for a Breville. Now thats even better than selling ice to an eskimo!  Cheesy

Luca? Joking?

I heard he was thinking of ditching the silvia for that breville baby.
