Has anyone tried the AeroPress?
Jan 18th, 2006, 1:11pm

In my recent web travels I've been reading about the new fangled AeroPress. If you can beleive the reviews its aparently pretty good, and the price is right too.

...

Here's the original link:-

http://www.aerobie.com/Products/aeropress_story.htm

And some reviews:-

http://www.singleservecoffee.com/archives/004326.php#more
http://www.coffeegeek.com/forums/coffee/machines/195166
http://www.gizmag.com.au/go/5051/

Has anyone used one of these before, or know of any Australian distributors?

that looks uncannily like the way they make coffee in Vietnam, but the equipment is a touch more basic, it's made out of steel and doesn't get plunged.

Possibly the strongest coffee I have ever head, though it did come froma weasel's bum which might have been part of the issue.

Hi all,

I have been in recent discussions with the manufacturer of this product in the US, they are apparently looking for a distributor in Australia.

I am considering buying a couple of units for sampling and evaluation.

Assuming that it can produce a reasonable end-product, would any CS members be interested in purchasing an item like this for use in the office or in the car whilst travelling etc??

Not sure exactly where it would sit in the market as yet - It is not really a high-end, specialist piece of brewing equipment like a syphon etc.  Nor is it a 'Demtel' product either... Undecided

But anyhow, if people are interested, please let me know!!!

Regards,

James

James,
Have you got one here to try? I'll assume you have if you're considering importing them. What are your thoughts?

Some of the reviews mention espresso. I wouldn't have thought this possible out of this type of plunger. Do you know if the whole cup of water is forced through the 20 micron screen, or is it just a smaller amount and you top up? I can's see too much effective difference between it and a plunger. Ok, the screen might be finer, but it's still forcing water through coffee grinds.

ChristianS, keen to read your review...

Hey all,

Christian, where did you purchase yours from?  From talking to the manufacturer, they are yet to set up an outlet in Aust???

JM - They are designed and manufacutrered in the USA.

John - I don't have one as yet - I have initially looked at buying 4 and passing them around for evaluation (Yes, Andy, you are on my list!)

Not sure how much demand there will be for this product as it will work out close to $50 Aust once all relevant costs / taxes are added.  They sell for $30 in the US, so if they are really that good, then perhpas people will be willing to spend that amount for their office or simply to use as an alternative brewing method.... Undecided

Nonetheless, I will keep you all posted as to my progress.

Christian - Eagerly look forward to your review  Cool

James

Hi everyone,

James, Your right theres no Oz outlets just yet. I ended up ordering from www.localsonlycoffee.com, airmail ended up costing nearly as much as the press itself! The price you pay for wanting it yesturday Wink

Theres a few online retailers, all based in the US and all with very similar prices (+/- a dollar or two). Bulk orders would obviously help with shipping costs.

I can't see a device like this replacing Miss Silvia (or any good quality machines), as half the fun is the process of pulling a shot. But the Aeropress is very portable and relatively cheap. We'll see soon enough how easy it is to use, and more importantly how good the coffee tastes.

Hey all,

I got to try a cup of java brewed with the aeropress here this last week and I must say I was very impressed.

I didn't have a chance to really play with it and put it through its full paces testing different grinds and pressures but for a first-shot-guess-at-the-grind-and-pressure the resulting cup was the best non-espresso or Cold Process cup of java that I can remember having.

The coffee used was Nicaragua Angelina Estate taken to the start of the rolling 2nd crack and was 4 days post-roast. It was ground slightly coarser than for espresso with the water heated too 195F.

The water was poured over the grounds, a quick stir given to ensure a complete mix and then the plunger put in and the water pressed out over about 30 seconds.

The resulting cup was incredibly smooth and full of rich flavor with very low acidity. I was very impressed with it!

The filter did a very nice job with no sediments making it into the cup and clean-up was easier and less messy than with a French Press with it appearing to be easy to brew several cups in a row (this wasn't tested).

Overall I'd have to say the Aeropress does exactly what it says it will, giving you a near espresso quality cup of java that is many times better than any brewed coffee I've ever had.

The only downside I see with it is the small quantity of coffee produced. I can see no reason why the design can't be scaled up so it produces several times as much coffee. Four times as much would be a nice mark to shoot for I think as that would produce enough for two people to enjoy a nicely sized cuppa.

I'm hoping to get the chance to play with the Aeropress here at home for a couple of days where I can experiment with different grinds and pressures to see how that changes the final cup. If nothing else I'll probably end up ordering one for myself here in a month or two for the camping season where it will replace my usual Moka or French Press coffee.

What's it costing you  (ballpark) to land the unit here (unit + freight)  ?

I like trying new gadgets and reckon I might have to get one myself.

About $54US all up, $30 of that is product. Apparently, Flags and Kites (love that name!) will be giving me a bonus 350 microfilters. The filters, by the way, a said to be reusable.

At this price it's got to be worth a try.

Thanks for the info.

That IS a cool name for a shop.

Hmmmm....  around AUD$75.   Wonder if they will ever appear "on the shleves" here.

I assume it's glass ?   So there is always a risk of it arriving in sunny Oz in more pieces than it left.

But that's the risk you take I suppose.    Might have to get one myself next month (car rego due this month - ouch !!! )

Might be a good toy to play with while I save up for a "Silvia" class machine.

Cheers...

Apparently it's polycarbonate and tough.

The big reason for me is I want some way of preparing medium-roasted beans in something other than a vacpot. I just find that what is ideal for the vacpot is too acidic in the Faema Family. I would rather burn a roast than put up with what gets called "citrus notes". Maybe it's the thermostat on the Faema, maybe it's my iron-pot roasting, but I've just been sampling some of the PNG and Sumatra in the vacpot and they're both nectar. Distinct, distinctive and wonderful. Even though the roast looks pretty dark, they're both too acidic in the Faema. To get good espresso I've been using those Monsoon beans and some overdone Peru beans with a bit of medium roasted Peru for balance. Very dark-roasted Timor was great  in the Faema, till I ran out of beans. (I later tried some professionally roasted Timor given by a friend, but it was way too citrussy.)

Maybe it's just me or my Faema, but I really would like to find a "third way" and lose the acid while keeping the fruit. Maybe the Aereopress will do that. Or maybe I need some tips from the Snobs.

Hi Everyone,

My Aeropress arrived a few weeks ago but have been a little busy for a proper review. It must be said though, I was pleasantly suprised by the quality of coffee it can produce! Very smooth flavour, not bitter or acidic at all.

Some main points:-

1. Very easy and fast to use
2. Very easy and fast to clean
3. Small and easily transportable (camping, picknic, work)

Its unfortunate there aren't any australian distributers yet, but hopefully soon there will be. Ended up costing a little less than $70AU when it arrived. To me it was worth it though.

I've tried a few cups on friends, two of those have already purchased the Aeropress and the other is waiting for a local purchase.

The instructions that came with the Aeropress give you guidelines for coffee and water dosage, temperatures etc. But on following those I ended up with a very sour tasting brew. A little experimentation gave excellent results though, which I'll go into later on.

Well, the Aeropress now has a distributor in Oz  Grin ! $54 incl postage which seems pretty good value. Avail 1st March.

Web site is www.aeropress.com.au/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=183 (I'm adding it as Google doesn't seem to find it. Hope I'm not crossing any lines here ). Company doesn't seem to have any other coffee affiliations.

Excellent an ozzy distributor! Thanks for the info Matt Smiley

Now for a little bit of a follow up...

For myself I use one level scoop of coffee, water level between 2 and 3, temp at around 85C.  The grind fairly fine as well, same as I use for miss Silvia. I've found the result to be excellent, very tasty brew. All done in around two minutes including heating the water.

When attempting a double shot, using two level scoops of coffee and water level at 4, the taste was very bitter. Perhaps adjusting temp and/or grind could remedy this?

Anyone else like to share their Aeropress experiences?

Hi Curtis,

As the importer/retailer of this product, I think you should contact our head of Admin.... Andy Freeman via PM, to ensure that any potential for conflict of interests or product spruiking can be dealt with in accordance with current site policy. Hi Mal,

I emailed Andy on Saturday morning and haven't heard back from him.  I only made that last post so I could get my post count up to "1" so I could actually reply to a personal message (which you can't do if your post score is "0").

I definitely don't want to step out of line and hopefully I'll get an answer to my email...maybe I'll try resending it?  I'm probably just being a little impatiient after all it was the weekend Smiley

Thanks for the friendly advice!

I purchased mine from the Aussie distributor mentioned earlier in the thread.

First impressions of the AeroPress are "what a solid little beasty".
Well designed and constructed from thick chunky plastic.

Only had a chance to make one coffee so far.    Smooooooth is one word to describe it.   Shocked    Smiley
I've been drinking a lot of plunger coffee lately and loving the body and mouth feel.

The Aeropress brew was vastly smoother and silkier.
Not one I'll be having as my regular morning cuppa where I prefer a full bodied spoon-stands-up-on-it's-own brew, but I can definatly see myself enjoying AP brews in the evening and as a mid afternoon get-me-thru-this-meeting,  pick-me-up till home time sipper Grin

Look forward to playing with it some more on the weekend.

Just made my first brew in the Aeropress. I agree with all the positive reports. I kept the temp to 75F (Shark kettle), stirred briefly and plunged as soon as I could (but slowly). Result with some Mandheling was great. Lots of flavour, not quite as silky as vacpot but far less coffee for similar strength levels. There was just-right acidity with the very quick brew, even with a grind of 6 on the Rocky. I can't see any relationship between this and espresso; it just strikes me as a very good and very economical way of making coffee. I'll keep my vacpots and my misbehaving Faema Family, but I'm not sure I'll be keeping the French press. Silkiness may be increased by coarsening the blend a little, but why should I bother chasing vacpot flavour? And why chase espresso flavour? Why not just have Aeropress flavour?

I've had the day at home so I've been able to make several brews with the Aeropress. It's fine! The taste is what I'd describe as "vacpot concentrate". I can really taste the individual bean, the acidity of a lighter roast can be offset by a slightly lower temp and maybe a quicker brewing time with more coffee.

You're going to find this a bit gross, but I just aeropressed two brews of just-roasted Monsoon Robusta and even though the smell of the fresh grinds was a bit rank, the brew was very good indeed. Really!

The other good things about this method are the speed, the easy cleaning, and the way you can just pop a wet, rinsed filter back into the device, ready for the next brew.

My only complaint is the constant use of the word "espresso" in all descriptions and promotions of this product. For the life of me I can't see how this resembles espresso. Mind you, neither does mocha-pot or the excellent brew from an Atomic resemble espresso. If I want espresso I'll go and have another fight with my Faema Family. (I win some of the time).

G'day Alan,

Great to have you as a member of the CoffeeSnobs community Smiley.

Your kind offer of help will no doubt be appreciated by those members who have purchased or are about to purchase one of your very unique devices. So far, all reports back that I have read have been very positive but I'm sure there will be a few owners out there who would like to know how to "tweak" the AeroPress to get the best out of their particular blend Wink.

Cheers,
Mal.

I'm still using this thing and still liking it. I've just been using my preferred espresso stuff - Ugandan, Malabar, Ethiopian etc -  but I'm going to start roasting coffees of a less earthy type for use in the aeropress (and vacpot) just to see how they go. Better, I suspect.

I keep using the same filter, reinserted wet after a rinse, and it seems to work better than a new filter. Certainly it doesn't lose any performance, so I'll keep using it till it tears.

Congratulations to Alan on making such a clever product.

Subject: Re: Aerobie Aeropress - Some Americano recipes

Hello All,

Here are some suggested Americano recipes.

Two level scoops of coffee, pressed with water to the top of the #2 oval, then diluted, will yield the following total brew after dilution:

12 ounces of brew which matches the Specialty Coffee Association of America recommended strength.  (Brix=1.5)

Most AeroPress users like to take advantage of its low bitterness, by brewing stronger than the SCAA standard.  Below are two suggestions.

9 ounces of brew about as rich as Peet’s brewed coffee. (Brix=2)

7 ounces of very rich brew. (Brix=2.5)  This is the "Rich Americano" I've suggested on other boards. Diluting the output of the press about 1:1 will deliver this brew.

Best regards,

Alan
