Affogato
Oct 27th, 2006, 10:55pm

Ok - I know there are mixed feelings about the Affogato. Some cafes won't even serve them for one reason or another - usually I have been told that No! this is not a real coffee drink.

Well, I must confess that I really like Affogato - nothing better on a hot afternoon.

I had my first of the season at lunch time today. Now I know I've already waxed lyrical about the joys of Epic - so much so that you may be getting bored with it - well I'm not! They do an affogato that really is something else. Imagine the greatest shot of coffee you've ever had poured over the creamiest, most luscious vanilla bean ice cream. Remember the key to the amazing Epic shots is the huge mouthfeel and range of flavours - something almost, but not quite bordering on savoury. Then too this you have added rich and sweet ice cream.

It blew me away - why doesn't everyone make these? Why doesn't the rest of perth know about this place yet?

Yes -I rave about Epic - perhaps because it is the first Cafe I have walked into that can consistantly live up to the rave.

Glad you found someone that knows how to make this very simple (but exquisite) espresso drink, let alone do it well. Most dont know what it is and even if they did, would ruin it point blank with a badly made espresso. This I think you will find, is the real reason behind the quoted comments above. Not really the kind of drink to put on the menu in a regular eatery.

But..........wouldnt it look better (for them) if the cafe staff were to just fess up that they dont know what you mean, and ask you what it is and how you would like it made and then have a go....rather than to give a bull dust answer that makes them look bad like "its a not a real coffee drink"?

Regardz,
first crack.

first crack - dead right, I'd rather explain to a person how to make the drink I want rather than have some poor interpretation of it - a lot like a cocktail really. I have ordered affogato in the past and received a dollop of ice cream in a long black - and not a good long black either. I am ashamed to admit that I drank it rather than sending it back and explaining how I wanted it - something I would certainly do these days. Better for them and better for me. We are about to approach the local cafe up here and ask them if they want some help in tuning their coffee - at the moment is is of an appalling standard.

I have served affogato on occassion at work. But I actually only do it for special customers and the bosses!

Its a fun drink, IMO! Smiley

I love to serve it all separate. I put the icecream in a chunky glass, the shot of espresso in a shot glass and add a shot of Franjelico...okay so maybe that's not true to the drink but it is a great addition. I put the three glasses onto a largish white plate, along with a spoon. The customer doesn't get the shot of Franjelico but they can have a shot of hazelnut syrup if they like. (Hmm, note to self:maybe should try it with that yummy Alchemy Tiramasu flavour!)

When the drink is served up in that fashion, I always get oohs and ahs from the customers. Then they want to know how to drink it. Half the fun I think with this drink is how you put it together. Does it taste better if you pour the coffee in first or the shot or vice versa! So many decisions and choices! Cheesy

Affogato, I believe, means "Drowned". Quite appropriate really!  Grin

I'm a big fan of the Frangelico addition as well scoota gal, its one of my favourite liqueurs.

But, I've heard a horror story from a fellow coffee snob... a horror story of something they got served once that they could only describe to me as 'Avocado Affogato'. I saw a photo and was horrified. Yes, avocado, espresso and vanilla ice cream.

Scary.

Ahhhh... one of my favourites... simple, rich, but not so much as you'll regret you did.
For me it just has to include franjelico, the best vanilla icecream possible and of course a good double shot expresso.  Tongue

I LOVE a good affogato.... which 98% of the time means making it at home. i made a few for friends over for dinner once with premium choc/mint icecream, they were great too... but rich vanilla bean is always the best.!

I had an afogato made the way scoota gal described in a restaurant in Newcastle.  The food and service at this place was top notch, they has a decent coffee machine, as so looked reasonably set up for quality coffee.  Alas, no afogato on the menu.  Anyway I asked, the waitress said she would ask if they would do one, which kinda made me think, oh no, what am I gonna get???  Well, when she brought it over to the table in separate glasses etc, she got top marks!!! I love to be surprised in a good way with my coffee.

I'm with you there grendel...

The Epic affogato blew me away.  I had a quality pistachio ice cream with a shot of custom blend coffee.  The texture and body was sublime.  The nutty array from the ice cream breaking through the espresso was like something i never tried before. Then the sweetness and rich mouth feel that followed was intense.

Definately an experience.  Now that the warmer weather is moving in looks like it will be a regular on my list.

I reckon I might have to smuggle a small bottle of frangelico in with me one afternoon and add it to my affogato! That sounds pretty nice.

I am going to have to drop up there for the pistachio one this week - I am thnking of friday afternoon at this point - looks like it is going to be a warm one.

Indeed it is - and I am just back from trying it.

Great stuff - again a terrific ice cream, although my preference is alway for the vanilla bean.

Another great Affogato though - I can see a weekly treat of these throughout summer.

I tried the pistachio - it was great but I liked the vanilla better - just a hint of a marzipan-like flavour in the pistachio and I am not  a great fan of marzipan. (not usggesting that there was any in there it is just that when you grind nuts you get flavours a little like that - even with pistachios).

I was in a Restaurant in St Kilda the other night - fantastic food, really nice beer (Moo Brew, from Tassie), and on the menu was 'affogato'!

Then I saw what they wanted to charge for the affogato ... $18!

Woah mattyj, $18 is steep... multi hatted establishment in StKilda?

http://www.enzo.com.au/menu_dolci.html

In the burbs, the highest I've seen is for $15, which I think is stupidly high for the outer suburbs of Melbourne. Decent restaurant for the burbs, mostly attracting suitys, but that doesnt excuse such a high price for what is minimal kitchen prep effort.

Needless to say, I didn't order the affogato (and the $18 included a nip of your preferred liquer ... but still!) ... why would I have coffee there when St Ali was a 5 minute walk from the hotel???

It was at 'Stokehouse', which we loved! The food was great, the upstairs room was great, the view was fantastic! But yeah ... expensive.

But I did get a $12 beer there - 'Moo Brew' from Tassie. That was like a pleasant slap in the face with a bunch of really aromatic flowers ... so floral, and so sweeeeeet ... top beer that!

$18 for an affogato, did the icecream have gold leaf in it or something Huh

I make my own vanilla bean icecream in the summer, and a lovely shot of coffee over it is something to behold. I always serve it in separately glasses.

The cafe where I have been having coffee for years always served it this way and it is quite often and early morning treat. Cool

the affogatto

Hi guys, what do you all think about the affogatto. simply a scoop of creamy vanilla ice cream topped with a shot of coffee. this seems to allow u to enjoy all the strengths of the espresso experience while guarding you against any of the possible dissapointments. even a mediocre shot will still shine through and dampen the negatives. a great shot will show its true colours. im hooked on these. adding icy milk to an affogatto gives u the iced coffee which is great for those hot days.

Funny you ask... my last bought coffee was an affogato and it was amazing!  Smiley

I had it at a Gelatissimo. They present it in a really cute way: on a little rectangular tray, with the espresso in little white creamer jug. I chose hazelnut gelato, so I got the gelato in a little expresso glass with a pile of fresh hazelnut pieces in a small ceramic dish. You dump the nuts on top of the gelato and then pour your espresso over the lot. Great way to serve it and exponentially adds to the fun factor!  Cheesy

Oh, I almost afforgot... the expresso was good too!

Count me in as an affogato fan.  Wink

I am about to experiment with the affagatto at home. My Dad manages a Peter's Ice-cream distributor and when he visited us yesterday he asked what ice-cream we would like this time. At first I went with the standard but than recalled a new flavour they have just brought out in their range. Vanilla with vanilla bean, so now we have a 5 litre tub of that bad boy sitting in our freezer ready to experiement a little. I recall Grendel talking up a vanilla bean affogatto in Perth. I am sure my shots won't be as good as Epic's but being on the East I will have to settle with my playing instead.
Seen as though it is a warm day in Sydney today I will being enjoying one shortly.

Great with plain vanilla ice cream but golden north honey ice cream is pretty good too.

i use peters vanilla ice cream. its oh so creamy. so they have a vanilla bean vanilla now? gee i must look into that. sometimes i will add a bit of chocolate powder to the shot before i pour it onto the ice cream. other times a teaspoon of kalua drizzled over makes it for me. anyway the whole family now always ask me for an affogatto. so i guess thats testament. i will try the honey idea.

It is called Movenpick (on the container it says it originates from Switzerland, so you willa ctually find a few symbols on top of the letters) and it is a new range. It only comes in 100g containers at certain retailers and 5 litre containers that places that sell ice-cream by the scoop would use. So is probably not readily available but if you find it than I am sure you will enjoy it. It was very enjoyable when I had it for the first time today. The Peters extra creamy is great though as you say. I am sure there are comparable qualities with other manufactuers but need to remain loyal to my dad, plus I get it at the right price  Wink

kool so the thread has been merged. i did search for affogato but mispelt it obviously. anyway i found that the peters plain vanilla was creamy enough as it was. in fact when the ice cream melts theres always a layer of cream on top of the drink. but the vanilla bean aspect of this movenpick u speak of should be explored. i wonder how a few drops of vanilla extract would affect the affogato. kahlua, baileys, honies, chocolate syrups, frangelico, cobram creme are all potential embellishments for this wonderful espresso drink.

if its too hot.. chuck ur affogatto into a blender with some milk and a few ice cubes and u have one awesome summer frappe. mmmmm

You all go me thinking and since I have never tried an Affogato I just had to make one whilst I read through the posts.  I only had Chocolate vhip vanilla Icecream.  Not badbut boy does it cool the espresso down quickly,  (I know you have just pured it over icecream, of course it's gonna get cold.)

Anyway I enjoyed it.  I think I will have to try one from the experts of Epic though.  I am still not making the espresso the way I want it but this is because I still am manual grinding my beans until I get my Sunbeam EM0480.  not long now,  I would have saved enough money to buy one by the end of March. (Hopefully)

Love em, especially when Melbourne is 38C for a few days and it too hot for a normal brew.
Have only used good valilla icecream.......its also a bean, that must mean something!
I recommend a shot of chilled Vodka with it, it really seems to enhance the espresso flavour, but I'd probably use any alcohol just for scientific purposes of course!

LOL - ya I love to 'corretto' the 'affogato' too.  Coffee and alcohol are such good friends.

Was very hot here in Adelaide on the weekend and so I made some of these for some visitors without even realising it had a name. Might have used a bit more icecream than just a scoop though. But they were so nice I had one in the arvo as well. Ran us out of icecream. It was the Peters Extra Creamy.

today i tried using a teaspoon of galliano amaretto (almond liquor) on top of my one shot one scoop affogato. interesting. the almond taste blends in with the coffee quite well.

I'm having people over on the weekend for my birthday and my wife has ordered a gelato "cake".
Hazelnut/chocolate.
I can see myself serving up a few hazelnut affogati.

What a great forum. I have to say I love Affogato, and out of interest was in a cafe last week who had Affogato Dopplar on their board which I found out was a large Affogato. First time I've seen this.

I made a large one today at home, really nice considering the heat. I thought I was going to lose half my ice cream when my 2.5yr old appeared out of nowhere at the table with his own spoon. Instead he started into the mostly straight espresso at the bottom and kept going - it was even too strong for me  Shocked
