Kyocera hand grinder
Apr 19th, 2009, 6:08pm

Hi Coffee Snobbers,
There is a ceramic hand operated grinder available you can check it out here: commercial link removed
I think it would cost about $120 including postage to Australia with the current exchange rate.
The info text says it will grind to 'Turkish powder fine'.
You guys with a bit more experience, do you think it would be OK for some or all forms of coffee making? It isn't big and shiny, but will it cut the mustard, I mean grind the beans OK?

Chris.

Looks like a good item and based on what second hand Zassenhaus grinders are bringing not that expensive. Still yet to see a hand grinder that will grind consistently enough for good espresso as you tend to get a range of particle sizes.

Just consider 200 turns/14g = 2 minutes/double or there abouts that will vary a lot depending on how fine or course you are doing Roll Eyes

Go on be the Guinea pig you know we want you to do it Grin

Thanks Beanflying, so it would probably be a step up from my $20 Aldi electric bean chomper but still a question mark about consistent grind size.

Mmmmm... I was thinking that you would need fairly good aerobic fitness to get the coffee made in a timely manner  Smiley

I was hoping someone else would be the guinea pig because I'm currently trying to get permission to buy a pushbike. I don’t think it's good to ask for more than one thing at a time  Grin

I played with one of these in Tokyo earlier this year. It was being sold to grind up powder for green tea.... it's made in China from memory. $120 is too much for it IMHO. I wouldn't part more than $40 for one.

Thanks Dan,
That doesn't sound so good... It does look like just a high quality pepper grinder.
But still, the guys from the orphan expresso website Commercial Link Removed  seem to care and they take time to write up little reports on things like the coffee machines they have repaired and tested.
They write a glowing report about the Kyocera grinder and say that it grinds to 'Turkish powder fine' which means finer than you need for normal expresso.
I still think that someone should be the guinea pig so we all know for sure.  Grin

Hi Chris

It might be me.

I bought a Turkish grinder from Orphanespresso and it was rubbish so have sent it back (they happily accepted the return) and have asked them for a good price on the plastic/ceramic Kyocera.

If/when it arrives I'll do a review on it and compare to my existing hand grinder which is a gem but getting tired as my Dad bought it in 1956 in Munich!

The exchange rate though, does make it an expensive bit of plastic  Shocked

BTW I think the Kyocera tea grinder is different to the coffee one.

If it's anything like thier mobile phones they wont be too bad!

Cheers
Simon

I'd try out the Kyocera but it doesn't make any sense to import it from the US. Surely you can source an importer of Japanese goods here. We import tons of other stuff from Japan, or if not even look at Japanese sites and try find one that ships to Aussie.

Hi Frank, good point. I haven't done enough searching around.

Maybe tomorrow I will have time to have a look for a local supplier. Maybe we can find one locally and cheaper for Simon our nominated guinea pig.

I was hoping that one or more of our site sponsors could stock it for us if we find that it works well. But first things first, we should nurture our brave guinea pig for now.

Thank guys for your help.
Simon will get his Kyocera Grinder in about 2 weeks and will test it out for us.
If it seems to work well enough for some of us guys to want one, we have some contacts so we can try to make them available locally.
I'm happy to wait for Simon to get back to us but if there is anyone who is interested now, let me know, I can make a start right away. Smiley

Hi All!  If you want to see the grinder in action (by the way it is manufactured in Japan, not China) we posted a video of it in use in our 'video vault' on our website - I don't know how to, or if it's ok to post it here.  We pulled the shot on our Wall Mount 58mm vintage lever Faema.

Always happy to do what we can to keep shipping costs down, so if there's ever a time you want to do some type of group buy from us, just let us know & we'll do what we can to help.

Doug and Barb,

How does this grinder compare to your Turkish grinder for espresso grinding?

How well would it work for a French press and AeroPress grinder?  And by that, I mean adjusting it for French press, then adjusting it for AeroPress, then back to French press, etc.

Thanks,

SlowRain

From our usage, it works better for espresso, than a Turkish mill would work for espresso.  As you loosen the burr on a Turkish mill it becomes more unpredictable.  A turkish grinder is designed to grind very, very finely, for Turkish coffee, and doesn't have as good a capability for moving coarser.  The Kyocera has a spring mechanism that keeps the burrs very even as they move apart for coarser grinds.  Setting the burr is very easy, just take off the catch cup, and the adjustment knob is right on the bottom of the burr - very easy to access.  No trouble to go from coarse, to fine, and back again.

Just letting you guys know that I am the Aussie distributor for these.

But before I will accept any orders I want to work out something with Andy in terms of a faircrack donation/site sponsorship. ..  the au$ price will be $99 + postage

the grinder is fantastic, can grind super super fine, micro adjustable, washable, the collection chamber fits perfectly into an aeropress etc.

Anyway .. I give Andy a call.

And to show you the consistency of the grinder,  heres are some Pucks from an Aeropress.

oh .. forgot to mention .. a BIG PLUS of the grinder ... dosing is a breeze.  Fill the top chamber completely will fit 20grams of whole beans (you can squeeze in 21grams).   There are also "wings" inside the chamber, that will mark out 14grms.

ok .. the pics .. both have been ground on 3 clicks up from zero, which is very fine .. clogs up all the espresso machines that I've put this through.  But through the Aeropress .. no problems.

And Kyocera also have a Green Tea Mill, but it is different to the Coffee Mill.  The Green Tea Mill is more like a Grater while the Coffee Mill is a Conical Burr.

this is 21 grams(3clicks)
...

and 35 grams (3clicks)

A few more questions:

1. How even is the coarse grind for French press?

2. What does it produce for fines at that setting?  I'm currently using an electric burr grinder that requires me to sift out the fines (about a 10% waste) before brewing in my press pot.

The photos above were at three settings above zero:

3. How many grind settings are there in total?

4. How many settings does it have in the espresso range?

5. Is the difference between each setting small enough for dialing in espresso?

Thanks

Good News,

I will be going ahead with Site Sponsorship,  thanks to Andy  Grin

As an introductory offer, for the first 20 sales from CoffeeSnobs I will ship express post for FREE (East Coast Australia). *500grm Express Post satchel.

The Price for the Kyocera Ceramic Grinder is au$99 of which $4 will go to faircrack.

If you would like to Order please post in this thread and I will contact you with payment details.  I will also maintain a list so you will know where you are in the cue so to speak.

If someone would like to write a detailed review PM me as I feel a review by me could be considered biased.

Personally I have not used this for French Press so I can't answer that specifically.  Being only a novice coffee drinker this question would probably best be answered by a "seasoned" reviewer.

I use it daily with my Aeropress.  I find it very consistent for this purpose.

The dialing of the Grinder is infinitely variable.  The clicks are there as guides.  You can dial it and stop wherever you want to, whether that is just after a click, halfway between clicks, just before a click .. etc.
Here is a close up.  There are 8 clicks for a full turn.

au_d2,

How about this as an experiment (either by you or the person who does the detailed reveiw):

Choose a relatively coarse grind and grind about 20-30 grams.  Brew it in the AeroPress using at least a one-minute steep time before pressing.  That should give enough time for the fines to settle to the bottom.  Then take a picture of the puck like the ones above.  I don't recommend drinking the coffee as it will likely be pretty weak--although you can if you want.  I just want to see some sort of experiment that may show the amount of fines in relation to the rest of the ground coffee.

Barring that, you could just pick a coarse setting and grind onto a piece of paper, then take a picture of the ground coffee.  Many people put a coin or something similar in the picture for size reference.

Or does anyone else have any suggestions for testing the coarse grind setting?

BEANs used .. Mix of Everything to get as much contrast as possible, surprising how even the colour gets on the lower settings.  Very consistent on the lower settings.  (Beans over 2 months old)

CSs is awesome, thank you everyone for your support.  5 units have been shipped out today including 1 to NZ and 1 to Andy.

so are you all ready for some more pictures?  I'm going to try posting clickable links.  Get out the popcorn Smiley
..............
Ok, as requested by SlowRain  (this experiment was for COARSE grinding) ... I dialed this as far as practical.  Ground up 20grms and tried to brew it in the Aeropress.  More like a drip process.
...
I kept topping up the brew chamber for about 2 mins, then proceeded with a very light press, here is the resultant PUCK ...
...
As you can see no form to the puck ... lets try again
A few clicks tighter
...
mmm .. still not a firm puck,  In relation to the amount of fines, I note that after grinding, there seems to be lots of tiny fines, but once brewed .. it seems less.
...
Getting your grinds from the Grinder to the Aeropress is simple.  A perfect fit for the Aeropress .. NO MESS  Smiley
...
Attempt 3. click in a few more ... MMMM ... looks Yummy Smiley
...
Attempt 4 .. click out from attempt 3 to get coarser  Smiley .. having fun yet?
...
Here's a closeup of the Puck after brewing, and before I expel it from the Aeropress
...
And the resultant Puck from attempt 4
...
And Clean Up Time ... SuperEasy.  Kyocera Ceramic is also resistant to bleach.
...
And finally ... some pics from earlier experiments
7 clicks-21grms
...
and 10 clicks-21grms
...

Still a lot of variables to play with Smiley ... I would love to do a "The Grind Sessions" night to muck around with the Kyocera Ceramic Grinder and different brewing methods .. syphon, aeropress, plunger, presso, Espresso Machine etc.

Thanks.  That's pretty much what I wanted to see.

I'm going to wait a bit to see what some of the others say who have ordered one.

Just register your interest in this thread and I will send you a PM  Smiley

This will make it easy for everyone to track the first 20 offer, and I also welcome and encourage open discussion on the Grinder.

Yes I'm possibly interested. I will however be in Italy sampling the real stuff so may not have a chance to follow this up without a reasonable delay.

PMs sent.

Time for another Experiment .. I think you'll enjoy this one .. I certainly enjoyed the cup produced.

Starring .. CoffeeSnobs Espresso WOW

Roast Date:  3rd February, 2009 >>  YES exactly 3 Months AGO

Storage:  the Beans have been in Freezer since the 5th/6th February, double bagged ... removed today !  .. Straight from freezer and into grinder .. less than 1 min to warm up.

Grind: Brand New Kyocera Ceramic, 8 clicks  (all the others have been with a demo unit ... this experiment was using a Brand new unit straight out the box.  First extraction, First go )

Brewing Method:  Aeropress .. 10 sec stir (I use a stainless steel chopstick as I find the plastic Aeropress paddle too big)  then a good pressure push.

ENJOY

Straight out of the freezer .. maybe I should've let the condensation dissipate before proceeding .... NAH are you kidding ...  I can't wait for that, need my coffee pronto  Smiley
...

Hot water in, stir for about 10 secs ... Espresso WOW alright .. still Heaps of CREMA  !!!!
...

Who said you can't get CREMA with an Aeropress  Cheesy  (yes not true crema as through a group head, but what do you expect when you filter the crema through some paper  Grin )
...

and here are the PUCKs
...
...
