Looks like a good item and based on what second hand Zassenhaus grinders are bringing not that expensive. Still yet to see a hand grinder that will grind consistently enough for good espresso as you tend to get a range of particle sizes.

Just consider 200 turns/14g = 2 minutes/double or there abouts that will vary a lot depending on how fine or course you are doing

I played with one of these in Tokyo earlier this year. It was being sold to grind up powder for green tea.... it's made in China from memory. $120 is too much for it IMHO. I wouldn't part more than $40 for one.

I'd try out the Kyocera but it doesn't make any sense to import it from the US. Surely you can source an importer of Japanese goods here. We import tons of other stuff from Japan, or if not even look at Japanese sites and try find one that ships to Aussie.

From our usage, it works better for espresso, than a Turkish mill would work for espresso.  As you loosen the burr on a Turkish mill it becomes more unpredictable.  A turkish grinder is designed to grind very, very finely, for Turkish coffee, and doesn't have as good a capability for moving coarser.  The Kyocera has a spring mechanism that keeps the burrs very even as they move apart for coarser grinds.  Setting the burr is very easy, just take off the catch cup, and the adjustment knob is right on the bottom of the burr - very easy to access.  No trouble to go from coarse, to fine, and back again.

The dialing of the Grinder is infinitely variable.  The clicks are there as guides.  You can dial it and stop wherever you want to, whether that is just after a click, halfway between clicks, just before a click .. etc.
Here is a close up.  There are 8 clicks for a full turn.

Had time to experiment tonight with just grinding.  The Missus wouldn't allow brewing as the smell was getting to her and had to cut the Mad Scientist routine for the night

BEANs used .. Mix of Everything to get as much contrast as possible, surprising how even the colour gets on the lower settings.  Very consistent on the lower settings.  (Beans over 2 months old)

Ok, as requested by SlowRain  (this experiment was for COARSE grinding) ... I dialed this as far as practical.  Ground up 20grms and tried to brew it in the Aeropress.  More like a drip process.

I kept topping up the brew chamber for about 2 mins, then proceeded with a very light press, here is the resultant PUCK ...

As you can see no form to the puck ... lets try again

mmm .. still not a firm puck,  In relation to the amount of fines, I note that after grinding, there seems to be lots of tiny fines, but once brewed .. it seems less.

Getting your grinds from the Grinder to the Aeropress is simple.  A perfect fit for the Aeropress .. NO MESS  

Attempt 3. click in a few more ... MMMM ... looks Yummy

Roast Date:  3rd February, 2009 >>  YES exactly 3 Months AGO

Storage:  the Beans have been in Freezer since the 5th/6th February, double bagged ... removed today !  .. Straight from freezer and into grinder .. less than 1 min to warm up.

Grind: Brand New Kyocera Ceramic, 8 clicks  (all the others have been with a demo unit ... this experiment was using a Brand new unit straight out the box.  First extraction, First go )

Brewing Method:  Aeropress .. 10 sec stir (I use a stainless steel chopstick as I find the plastic Aeropress paddle too big)  then a good pressure push.

ENJOY

Straight out of the freezer .. maybe I should've let the condensation dissipate before proceeding .... NAH are you kidding ...  I can't wait for that, need my coffee pronto  


Hot water in, stir for about 10 secs ... Espresso WOW alright .. still Heaps of CREMA  !!!!


Who said you can't get CREMA with an Aeropress    (yes not true crema as through a group head, but what do you expect when you filter the crema through some paper   )
