SCAE 2009 - World Latte Art, Good Spirits, Cup Tasting. June 26-28

June sees three locals head-off to Cologne, Germany to compete for Australia on the world stage at the Specialty Coffee Association Europe (SCAE) competitions.

26 June
Erin Samson will compete in the World Latte Championship.

In this championship latte artists will present two identical arts in 3 different beverages. A latte, a macchiato, and a signature beverage. The two first pairs just made with the mug and milk. The signature beverage with any surface aid at the choice of the barista.

27 June
Kirby Berlin will compete in the World Coffee in Good Spirits Championship.

SCAE World Coffee in Good Spirits Championship the competitors are therefore asked to make 2 identical Irish Coffees and 2 identical signature beverages to present to the judges. The beverages will be judged immediately for its taste, aroma and visual qualities and the scores are shown in open judging as the competition unfolds.

28 June
Ben Bicknell will compete in the World Cuptasting Championship.

8 triangles are set on the table. In each two cups are identical, one is different. With ability to smell, taste, memorise and concentrate the competitor will identify the odd cup in the triangles. The one with the most correct wins. With equal numbers the one with the shortest time win.

CS'rs are invited to a special treat at the Melbourne BeanBay pickup this Saturday...

Erin will be doing one of her final run-throughs before heading over to Germany and welcomes a crowd of CS'rs to help create the atmosphere of competition.

You will get to see her actual performance on the competition spec Dalla Corte machine.

The only gotcha is that there are no cameras or discussion of the actual latte art or performance specifics on CS. Obviously we need to keep Erin's routine secret until after the World Latte Art comp in Germany.

Where: Veneziano - Abbotsford.
When: Saturday 20th June, 11am

Bring: A clap and a cheer of encouragement.

In the Latte Art comp Erin's on 5th, Fiefy is on 14th representing Thailand (works at Bracegirdle's in Adelaide) out of 29 competitors.

In the coffee in good spirits comp Kirby's 2nd last in 18th position.

East coast of Australia is 8 hours behind us over here in Europe.

Looks like the weather will be inmproving for the comp, currently cold and raining in Austria, not much better up in Cologne.

Excuse the poor photography, i'm sure Andy will put me to shame soon enough.
We all caught up over free local beer and aussie wine after the competitor briefing.

Comp area looks quite good though it does prove how good the Australian national and also vic comp is setup.
4 stations with plenty of good seating.

In the heats she scored 8,8,8 which at the time was the highest score yet so now its a nervious wait till the last competitor scores are known to see if she makes the top 6 in the final.

How good the art looks in the cup isn't what wins the comp, it has to match the photo submitted.

yer, but looking at photos 4 and 16 from Andy - he is completely inconsistent.

I agree, I think Periklis from Greece was the visual clear winner. He's a nice guy too.

Without seeing the actual score sheets its a hard to say where or why the winner won but if I was Periklis or Kenji I would be pretty peeved.

I have a pile of shots of Kirby in the Good spirits comp to post up along with the Ibrik comp. Ben's Cup Tasting is on shortly so I need to go shoot that so sadly all the pic postings will have to wait as I just don't have enough time to get them edited and posted now. With any luck I can get some Net access tonight (German time) else I'll post them after I return to Oz.
