Hi all

Intro: Great. I'll be lurking in here. I have been in contact with a few roaster supply companies as I'm on the lookout for a 2nd hand 1kg roaster for home use. I have really been looking at reviews of the Toper Cafemino electric and a potential 2nd hand one that was up for sales seems to have fallen though.

I really should look at this table top Garanti HGS 1.   Anyone have one of these and using it?

I'm curious too. I imagine these aren't really intended for the domestic market and the 1kg table top would more qualify as a shop roaster. Given it has more than 3 x the capacity of the GeneCafe or HotTop, would it be 3x the price?
Here's the guff on the HG site

If only Flynn,

Sadly, it doesn't work that way as most of the components required to manufacture a coffee roaster are required in any roaster...therefore, a 5kg roaster will never be anywhere near 1/6 of the price of a 30kg model....

Hi Flynn

Dealers and site sponsors here will give you an exact price but for a machine of 1-2kg your looking at a ball park of $10,00 new and $5000 or so 2nd hand.  This all depends on exchange rate and things of course.

Hence why I'm looking at 2nd hand. The bugger is that these things hold their value quite well. But they are real roasters and should, in the right hand and with some practice, be better than a Gene if your trying to make a few kgs a week of coffee. I'm sick of doing 4 runs on a Sunday in my Gene but I don't want to go the corretto route for larger batch size. I just don't really think they are very reproducible.

So yeah they are expensive. Full stop.

A bit of a rhetorical question I confess. You just have to look at it to see that it would be much more than $3K.

I imagine 2nd hand ones would be hard to find. A GC or HT would suit my modest needs but I'm looking to get a corretto going. It would have to be the easiest and best value-for-money option for a roaster that can do batches > 300g.

Depends on how much effort you're prepared to put in Mike... A very generalised statement if ever there was one Huh

If you're only looking for something that will roast batches of around a Kilo at a time, why not go the route of the style of roaster that KK has documented. These are extremely amenable to proper profile control with a minimum of effort (compared to a Corretto for example) and produce excellent and repeatable results... Cool

Mal.

I've just seen some discussion about a 300g Garanti on HB. Any in Australia yet? Any comments about them?

My only problem with Coretto is that I'm breathing in 1 hour's worth of smoke and particles each week. I'm considering purchasing a HT just for the partial smoke filtering, but know nothing really of the 300g Garanti.

Hi all Garanti owners

There is a HGS2 2 kg table top model and a smaller1 kg HGS 1. For the 2kg model:

1. Can anyone tell me from experience what is the lowest load for a Garanti HGS 2 which would still result in a good roast?

2. At the lower loads at some point the sampler would not pick up the beans. About what load does this occur?

3. At the lowest load what happens to the beans? Do they get too hot and char/tip or what does one notice?

Thanks
Mike

Hi Mike,

I know that Andy can and does roast down to 2kg on his 10 kg HG and I frequently do 1.5kg on my 5kg. I'd say that you should be able to roast to 500-600g no problem on a 2kg model

I love the look of that HGS-1--although where I'd put it, I don't know. "Tabletop" is a bit misleading, it's larger than a 2-drawer filing cabinet!

Hi all

Its just a bit wider than a filing cabinet and a bit more again when you add the chaf collector.
In fact the HGS-1 isn't much smaller than the HGS-2.
I've since found by the way that a HGS-2 trier won't pick up beans till one has about a kilo in it. 500 grams won't get sampled.

Hi Mike,
I have a HGS-2 (shop). I am very certain that 500 grams will get picked up in the trier. I will check tomorrow morning and let you know.
Cheers

Mike,
I put 100g into the roaster and the trier picked it up with no problems.
From my records the smallest batch size I have roasted was 500grams (a 16 minute profile to the start of 2nd)
On the smaller loads you have to wind the gas back alot.
Cheers.

Thanks aedion, much appreciated.

100 gms, I'm quite amazed. Maybe the dealers that sell Garanti roasters are used to customers asking how big the load can be not how small. That will be excellent for me, though I won't be going down to 100 grams but it's nice to know that I could probably do 300 gms OK.

Chris - I have looked at all the nice pictures...how is the heat intensity controlled on the 5kg shop roasters?  I see for example that the 4 motor one is 14 mins roasting time, but presumably you could for example easily do a 11 mins first crack and 17 mins second crack....and is it a matter of getting th profile you like then saving it or is it a manual jobbie each time?

Cheers and thanks.

Hi Scott,

With mine, I can get to 2nd in 5 min if I want to  Shocked..

I use this "profile" to teach new roasters what not to do...

These roasters are manual- as are the vast majority of shop roasters. You control the gas and the airflow as well. It's up to you to create profiles which work for what you roast and then document the key points of the profle so that you can replicate it. Andy's roast monitor software makes that easy.

If you want automatic profile control, you'll have to open that cheque book and you'll spend 5 figures above and beyond the cost of your roaster...

Hope that clarifies things Wink

Thanks Chris - I like the sound of them.  So you could easily do 10.5-12 mins say for first crack and stretch the roast some 4-6 mins to the second crack by the sounds of it.

Cheers mate

Hi Coffee Company.

2kg roasters tend to be hard to find. Best bet might be to post a wanted to buy request in: http://coffeesnobs.com.au/YaBB.pl?board=Sale

Keep in mind CS site sales and posting policy: http://coffeesnobs.com.au/YaBB.pl?num=1115338528 which requires that you must add a prepared to pay price...

Good luck Wink

Yes, he was the man who kicked off the Ottoman Empire. I did note the Has Garanti - Turk link.

I see - I just checked out a pic and it isn't as big as I thought a 10kg roaster might be. Quite compact really.

Hi all

This morning I received my 2kg Has Garanti. I have been looking for a year for the right 2nd hand machine. It's an ex-demo machine from a roaster importer in Sydney, it's in excellent condition and has seen about 300 kg through it. That's pretty low milage. I'm sure many of the CS people in roasting will know Will Notaras. He helped me this morning with the operation of the machine and a few roasts.

Some pics below. The coffee that came out well is the Nicaragua High Grown Bold. I'm looking forward to trying it in 5 days time.  I look forward to learning lots from the other Has Garanti owners here and to contributing as well.

Best wishes
Mike

Hey, congratulations Mike!

I know you've been contemplating such a move for a while now, and it's good to see this roaster now has a good home.

I guess your BeanBay purchases will be on the increase now!  Grin

Cheers

Congratulations Mike! Wish you many a happy roast on these beautiful machines.

As a heads up for anyone else looking for a new second hand Has Garanti Roaster we will be putting our 5 Kilo (8 months young) on the market for sale/delivery in Febuary.

Upgraditis in a big way has hit us here at Supreme Roasters and we will be getting in a 15 Kilo in the new year. Alas I don't think we will see our babies 1st year birthday and would be ideal for someone looking at upgrading or entering the industry.

Congratulations. Glad it fell into place for you, and what TG said. Actually I can't really afford to be jealous as I wouldn't have room for a roaster of this size anyway

Great looking roast too.

(BTW hope your neighbours know of your Coffeesnobdom and don't think it's some kind of crystal meth lab:

Abner! He's in the garage again with that crazy looking machine!)

Drugs eh ... When I first got my green beans from bean bay delivered to my parents-in-laws place they were surprised to see bags of stuff being delivered from Columbia and Nicaragua. "All you need to know is that the bags contain coffee. Just take delivery and I'll supply you with the roasted hush coffee" Smiley

Hi all

I tried another roast later this arvo in the Garanti. Really stuffed up 1 kg of Ethiopian Guji Smiley
The temp of the drum was too high after first crack and they went to full city and oily just a few minutes after first crack. Ditched them.  For 1kg in this machine for the beans tried so far I need to turn off the gas after first crack as the temp just coasts along. So far I have done:

Aust MTE Bin 35: Under tuition.  750 grams, profile a bit askew, just getting a feel for the machine.
Nicarg. Bold: Under tuition. 1kg. Drop temp 115C. Back at 115C at 5mins. first crack at 122C, 7mins,
turned off gas, coasted. Turn on gas low. second crack at 16 mins, ended at 17mins. Nice run.
Ethio. Guji: 1st run by myself. 1kg Drop temp 115. Dropped to 99C. Back up at 115 at 5 mins.
first crack at 6.5 mins. Turned down gas but didn't turn off.  Far too dark/oily by 9 mins.
first crack sounded like hail on the roof! Ditched load.  Wife will use on garden as an
         expensive moluscicide Smiley

One thing that I expected and is great is that first crack and second crack are loud. No need to risk a burnt ear or chaff and smoke smelling hair trying to hear the Gene cracks. Smiley

The other thing I have learnt is that the lower limit on the load size isn't just set by whether the trier can pick up some beans from the drum but by how hot a small load gets when it enters the drum and whether tipping will occur from the drum being too hot for the load size.
Much to learn and enjoy Smiley

Hi KK and all

Ummm ... a name. I hadn't thought of that. Well if Den's one is going to be named Osman of Ottoman fame perhaps something to balance that ... Sir Galahad ? Smiley

(Sir Galahad was the hero of the Grail quest, a knight of the Crusades, who were always waging war on the Turks)

How's about Sir GalaHAS... sorry... couldn't resist.  Wanted to call first cat Claude DePussy after famous french composer (Debussy) but was over-ruled on that one also... thankfully.

Haha.  Classic.

It reminds me of Austin Power's 'imitation' of the Bond character Pussy Galore...."Alotta Fagina"

Massive congratulations Mike. I will be very interested to hear the improvements in flavour profiles once you think you are nailing your roasts

All the best with the journey!
