Unauthorised use of your espresso machine.
Jul 24th, 2009, 9:50am

Yesterday my bother in law came over to baby sit for 1/2 hr whilst my wife went shopping.  During that time he decided to use my Silvia...without permission, I was not impressed when I came home and noticed it'd been used...there was coffee all over the shower screen, fingerprints all over it, the group handle and filter weren't cleaned properly, the grinder was still switched on and my knock box had 'slurry' in it...it looked like something my cat does every now and then.
My wife knew he'd used it too and questioned him on it, especially if he'd used milk...she tried to explain the boiler priming thing, but he only had a shot without any milk, so that's a relief.  But hey it's ok...he has a Saeco super automatic, so he knows all about coffee making.  Angry

I felt violated..I had to clean, backflush, wash my knockbox and pull myself a shot just to make sure my baby was still all ok.

Anyone else had their espresso machine violated without their permission?

I had to fix that up for him...he can't read manuals and is ...well the words house brick, plank...sandwhiches and picnics come to mind.  Recently he was going to take the Saeco in for a service as it was only producing 15ml cold weak coffee's.   All it needed was the settings tweeked...he'd turned the machine off (after leaving it on for months) and that caused the settings to be reset to minimums.   Roll Eyes

No one touches the Expobar at home except to draw some water for tea and at the moment it's switched off while I'm at work because I hadn't changed the programming on the timer and it scared my wife when it came on one afternoon recently.  Grin

At work I recently removed my grinder from next to the EM6910 in the kitchen because I found remnants of preground in the hopper.  Angry Angry Angry Angry Angry Angry Angry Angry

A horrible, horrible experience, Steve. I hope you've recovered from the violation. The non-snob population simply does not understand how we suffer for our passion.  Cry

Is there a punishment suitable for a crime like this? I can't think of one.

Angry Angry Wink

A relative of mine once said he'd make his own coffee at my place, he knew how to do it, etc. I tried to put him off, but he was fairly insistent. So, with me closely monitoring him, he proceeded to make a complete hash of it, then gave up, at which point I stepped back in (shaking my head) and made it properly, telling him a few things he'd done wrong. He was suitably chastened and hasn't tried again. (Funny, I don't get so precious about anything else like that. Except don't ever try and touch the Takamine without permission.  Roll Eyes)

I am worried I may have same problem sooner or later.
Now my wife and I share our unit with another couple students to save some money since I am studying.

The good thing now is these couple did not drink coffee so they did not use my EM6910, however, they dirty our other kitchen appliances a lot.

Anyway, they will move out soon after we keep asking them to keep kitchen and other public place clean.
Now the prob coming problem is our another couple friends are looking for share our place after they finish they lease before they move oversea.
They drinks coffee and had a breville (<100.-) coffee machine (I wont call it espresso machine tho).
They did make some coffee for us when we visited their place.
Now I am worried how to show them how to use a basic real espresso machine is my concern, since they thought they know how to make a espresso.
And as a Taiwanese (Chinese), our culture make us feel its a bit rude to correct others when they thought they know how to do.
( I hope my English writing above can be understood since its a complex sentence.....)

Ha Thanks for understanding KK,
Although my poor English is not my point of post tho.
And I dont know Mandarin (chinese) sentence structure can be similar to European (Greek)?
I always found I use chinese way to build up my English and its difficult to be understood by English speaker.. (too many point in one sentence)...

Steve I think the correct punishment should be, take him to the local shopping centre, the bigger, the better and make him clean every espresso machine in the place.
This should teach him to leave your machine alone next time.

Hi Colin - this is a very tough situation.  I think the best thing to do is to be upfront with them and ask them not to use your espresso machine right from the start.  I've lived in many student share houses over the years - at least one of which deteriorated to communication only though yellow sticky postit notes left on dirty kitchen appliances/cutlery/toilets/piles of clothing etc.  I've also seen unspeakable things done to knives, stoves, pans etc..  I once found my ceramic mixing bowl left in the bathroom cupboard...I didn't ask...but threw out the bowl regardless...   Don't take the chance!  If all else fails you could warn them of the machine's undiagnosed and erratic tendency to propel hot coffee grounds over unsuspecting users... Good luck with it Smiley

I am sorry, I must not have the snobby-precious gene,

If my brother and Law made a complete hash of making coffee using MY! bezzera it probably wouldnt bother me too much.....  On the condition he showed and active interest and was prepared to take the time to learn how to do it properly and learn how clean the machine the next time. (thats a big condition).

I figure if give a man a fish you feed him for a day, if you teach a man to fish well... maybe he may just end up getting a decent machine, roaster and grinder so when you go to his house you wont have to drink superautomatico supermarket bean rubbish.

Now.. if he messed with the grinder settings.... a thousand papers cuts would not be justice.

Hmm...sounds interesting. Would said shiny toys be displayed in Cuppacoffee at some stage*? Not something VBMish perhaps, or dare I suggest an item not too dissimilar to a GS/3.

what he said.

seriously, I encourage people to learn to use my HX machines. worst they can do is make pretty bad coffee. if they were silvias, i'd be a bit more careful!

if they put decaf through my grinder without asking though, I'll have their nuts/bits lightly roasted and served to the cat on a platter.

It's a good thing that a shot of steam scares away cats and small children... Both are too inquisitive for their own good.

Most are too intimidated by the sheer size of the gear. The one person who tried to make a brew promptly gave it up after grabbing the porta-filter (I'm allowed! Roll Eyes Grin) incorrectly and suddenly finding out just how hot they are on a real espresso machine!

No I would not like it either, need some type of device that goes in the group head with a key lock like the idea with trailers where a ball locks in trailer.

I would be happy to show them how to use it, if they asked!

New employees in my office get the following advice:

"The fridge, toaster, sandwich press, kettle & Microwave are there for anyone to use", but the grinder & espresso are mine, and if you touch them YOU WILL DIE."

I bought a Quaha Napoletana II (aka Lelit Combi, Nemox Dell Opera, Mokita Combi) for the office which is getting a lot of use...probably 12-15 cups a day.  I charge 50c per cup to cover the price of beans, which most people conveniently ‘forget’ to pay.  I’m not too fussed about it, I get to drink decent coffee whenever I want and it’s still a lot cheaper than buying inferior coffee from a café.

In an office of 9, only 2 others are confident enough to use the machine (I end up making coffee for the others). Having said that, I will usually find it with:

1. The group handle still on group with spent coffee in the basket
2. Dried milk on the frothing arm
3. The water level dangerously low
4. The milk jug sitting on the bench, uncleaned
5. The drip tray close to overflowing
6. The hopper with no beans
7. The steam switch still turned on

It takes me 5mins of cleaning before I get to make a coffee for myself.  Again, this is something I’m willing to live with for having good coffee ‘on tap’ only 10 metres from my desk.

The problem now is soon I’ll be going overseas for 2 weeks.  Do I trust that they won’t let the machine run dry and burn out the element?  I’m very tempted to stash it away while I’m away but then face the wrath of colleagues who, thanks to me, are now addicted to good quality espresso.

Stash it away or MAKE some one else Fully RESPONSIBLE for the replacement of said unit should it be misused in your absence.

CJ, it sounds like it could be time for it to go in for a "service" while you are away, and it will be appreciated all the more when you both return Grin Grin Grin

I returned to the EM6910 after 6 months of being "between contracts".
The machine wasn't as bad as I'd imagined it might be.

Hopefully the other 2 confident users will take up the slack caused by your absence.

Leave it there, tell everyone they're welcome to use it, then take the portafilter with you.  Grin

then they'll put ground coffee in the water tank and see if a coffee comes out...

get an aeropress so that when they inevitably use it wrong (microwave it, put it on the stovetop, put instant in it) then at least it's only $50 to replace  Cheesy

Some great & funny suggestions there guys, thanks.  I particularly love the idea of taking the group handle with me!

Perhaps the machine will mysteriously break down during my last afternoon before leaving.   I still have the old EM4800 with an unpressurised Krups basket.

Of even greater concern is what I am going to do to satisfy my cravings whilst away!  I really should get myself a aeropress/kyocera combo!  I don't want to get stuck driking Starsucks whilst o/s.

It's a shame my aeropress doesn't fit inside the chimney, or I would be tempted to take a popcorn maker  too.

My earlier comment was, obviously, tongue in cheek.

To answer the question seriously, I would say stash it for two reasons. 1. Obviously it doesn't get damaged in a cupboard. 2. It puts people in their place and reminds them not to take it for granted. After all, it's your machine, not the company's. They should be showing some respect by cleaning up after themselves and paying you the money they agreed to.

Stash it. They need to know their place.
