Peter the newspaper man
Apr 19th, 2010, 6:11pm

Down at the local bus stop Peter arrives every day at 5.30am to sell newspapers.  His health isn't good and he's on the Disability pension, yet despite this, he never complains.  He sits on the bus seat and often nods off until the next customer arrives.  He knows the names of all his customers as he has been doing this for many, many years.

On Saturdays I buy the paper directly from him rather than have it delivered, and we have a chat for just a few minutes.  Sometimes I take him a coffee.  It's a little thankyou for the many times that Peter places my newspaper on the doorstep, whenever the delivery guy misses his target.

Earlier this year Peter won a 10 day cruise and enjoyed the prize, telling me of his wonderful journey.  But lately, his health has deteriorated to the point where he had a mild heart attack a couple of weeks ago.  He spent a week in hospital and was recuperating at home, but last Saturday, at the age of 70, Peter passed away.

I'll miss you Peter and I am sorry I didn't take the time to get to know you better.  And if ever I find my newspaper on the doorstep, I'll know you had a hand in it.

Sad when people like this pass away, we lost a few quiet achievers locally last year. Not necessarily missed by name by most but part of the heart of what makes a community.

Another great soul gone on, Dennis.

For some reason, this story truly brought me to tears...you would understand why.

Thanks for sharing...please, don't be upset that I am. It is great to be able to feel both happiness and sadness in a story such as this.

God speed Peter.

Kiss
