Mazzer Mini V Rocky ?
May 13th, 2010, 6:22pm

Just about time to upgrade my grinder.
I'm contemplating a Mazzer Mini, the question is will I notice much of a difference changing from my much loved Rocky doser to the Mazzer?
So guess I should ask if the Mazzer will produce a more consistent, finer grind with less clumping than the Rocky.
Thoughts please. Smiley

You should notice a difference, although I can't say for sure.

I went from a Sunbeam 0480 to Mazzer Mini and noticed a HUGE difference. The Rocky is a better grinder than the Sunbeam, so your jump might not be as noticeable, although it still should be.

Make sure you explore all your options eg Compak and Macap grinders also.

Thanks for your thoughts, have done quite a bit of research, obviously there are better grinders than the Mazzer however $800 delivered is as high as I'm prepared to go.
Of course I'm open to other suggestions within my budgetary constraints. Smiley

i have never compared the rocky to a mini, but for 800 buckeroos, i'd rather get my hands on an 'as new' mini second hand from here for like 600-650 and pocket the change. OR go for a second hand bigger, faster, mazzer jolly, or compak K8 or similar to make the jump really noticable IMO (for whatever it is worth)

I haven't used a Rocky but I think it's fair to say my big, stepped Faema MPN commercial would leave the Rocky for dead? - the only big clump it ever saw was me.

Faema now replaced by a Mazzer M. No contest, Mazzer wins. So I would imagine a very noticeable difference between the Mazzer and the Rocky.

Thanks Don,
Interesting observations, at this point I suspect the Mazzer will be the go.  Smiley

G'day Jon.... Wink

Best advice really mate, (if it is both practical and feasible to do so) is to grab a bag of freshly roasted coffee (about which you are very familiar), your Rocky and then trundle off to the Coffee Barun and do a direct comparison.

When I upgraded from the Rocky, I went up to a commercial 64mm machine and the improved quality in the espresso pours was quite marked. My Rocky was bog standard though, no mod's to the Burr Carrier threads, etc.

There're a lot of anecdotal claims to be found at all the likely websites, that the jump from the Rocky to the Mazzer Mini is quite noticeable in the cup but unless you really know and trust the people making these claims, it really just comes down to making the jump and living with the decision. As others have mentioned above, don't leave the Compak K3 'T' or 'E' out of the equation either. These are probably the best value grinder around at this burr size.

All the best mate.... Smiley

Evening Mal,
Sound advice, unfortunately I'm 160 km from Adelaide so the comparison option is not on, hence all the online research.
I suspect making the jump and living with the outcome is the way I will go, what I'm trying to do is make sure I don't fall into the trap of buying something I'll regret.
Will check out the Compak range you mention.

Cheers,

Jon. Smiley

Just noticed the new Mazzer's have a tamper attached to the front, looks like they can be easily removed, is this correct?

Yeah, when I bought mine the first thing that went was the tamper. Then I removed the fingerguard. I also did a tape mod to pick up all the left over bits of coffee in the doser.

Shame you're not in Adelaide Jon. I don't have a MM but I do have a K3 & Anfim Best which are in the same ballpark which you would have been free to play with.  I also have a Gino Rossi commercial grinder for comparison's sake.

Have you considered the K3 Elite WBC?  May want to check with Talk Coffee & other sponsors regarding price.  It doesn't have annoying tamper at the front.  I have the older version; even if you remove the tamper there's still a big clump of metal blocking your view of the group handle.

That's very generous of you Caffiene.. love the snob community comradery!

I have pm'd you Jon about a great special I have on 1 new Mazzer Mini Black only.

Ultimately you will find you should be happy with the K3 Elite WBC or Mazzer Mini. You also have the option of the Touch at a great price point but doserless considerations will need to be taken into account.

Happy grinding!

Thanks for the kind offer CJ, distance means I'm going to have to make the decision based on online research.
The Mazzer looks to be smaller than the Compak and because of limited bench space for me smaller is better.
Not sure I know quite what you mean (big clump of metal blocking view of group handle) I assume this is with reference to the Compak.

Got your pm and have replied Roger.
Looked at the Touch, price is good but my preference is for a doser.

Picture says a thousand words.  Notice the different shapes of the doser chambers.  That bulge at the front of the old/standard version really blocks your view of the group handle when it's sitting on the forks.

Sorry to chime in on your thread Jon, but im going through a simmilar thing atm, is the Mazzer really worth forking out double the price of the Rocky, ie, is it really twice as good?

N.B it will be accompanying a La Pavoni Leva professional.

Cheers,
Kotaro

There will be a significant improvement--whether or not it is worth it, is, unfortunately, something that only you can answer.

I'm happy that I went from a Rocky to a Macap M4D. Smiley

So, I've pulled the trigger, ordered a Mazzer Mini from the very helpful Roger at Supreme roasters.
Now the wait begins, I'm hoping to have it on the bench by the end of next week, we'll see.  Smiley
