CoffeeSnobs Coffee Cups - Design and Win!
Jun 19th, 2010, 1:19am

I have a couple of cafe customers that would really like some CoffeeSnob branded cups so we are going to get some printed but we need a cool design.

This is where you come in!

Below are 2 templates, one for the 8oz cup and the other for the 12oz.
The yellow line is the visible area when the cup is assembled.

Don't worry if your art work isnt perfect, I'm after ideas as much as anything as the art will have to be done in high res and colour separation in special formats for the printer at a later date anyway.

What do you win?

At a minimum lots of peer kudos for being the winner but if we use enough of your design I'll send you enough cups and lids to drink one on the way to work for a year.  (If we use just a small part of your design we will still send you cups, just not as big a pile.)

So get cracking, post your entry in this thread.

Cool

How about our logo, printing one or two on the cup? Simple, elegant, ties in brand recognition, and is inexpensive as it's a single color print job. Smiley

You can print the background or the logo and even do it in different colors if so desired to differentiate between cups that contain different drinks or to tie a color to a customers color palette. Smiley

I tend to agree.. You have my vote...

Look at the best and you will always fine elegant and clean lines...

Lots of bling just makes me think some one spent too much $$$ on marketing..  Save the marketing $$$ and make the product cheaper.

1: A member card mug for Roasters maybe  Wink

2: CS logo on some standard fine baked china clay  cups YES..

3: The CS logo and web address on the take a way's

PS. Ya forgot the  16, 18 and 20oz  buckets  Grin

I agree with this too.  Was my first thought and I don't think any more detail would be necessary.

If these were available in a porcelain travel mug, I'd definately buy a couple too.

Saying that, I'll be having a think about some other design ideas.....

Andy...some thoughts re takeaways from our business perspective (which I'm sure you've thought of already too.)

I think keep it simple is the go...too much on the cup and it makes it seem messy and busy. Our suppliers keep dudding us in our cups and they've actually changed to their own branded ones which at first came out with some cartoony print on it which we really hated as it seemed so childish. We have always liked the detpak brown t/a's, it was a simple design and stood out as our "own" here in our town.

We don't like all black or white cups...they're what everyone else has and sometimes they're from places that do lava coffee on instant only!

Whilst generally I don't think that customers really care what is printed on their cups but I'm often proved wrong when people notice when our cup pattern keeps changing. As in "Oh, you've got new cups?" but I never bother to ask if they like them or not. So, if there was a CS cup, we'd probably also purchase them and use them unashamedly! People do often notice when I'm wearing my CS shirt and will comment on being a coffee snob, so I'm sure that they'd love to have a cup with it written on there!

Whilst the logo for CS is good, I don't think it has the punch needed to be on the side of a cup as a stand alone thing. Whilst I say this, the striking thing about the Campos (as an example) logo is the lettering and the smallish rosetta only catches my eye occassionally. So, maybe if the CoffeeSnobs word is made to be the focus and the logo of the cup not so much...just tossing ideas out here and I'm happy to be proved wrong too...

Make sure that the "Our Name Says it All" is also included on it somewhere!

And I know you like the font you're using but I think that it really needs to be a bit bolder. The font for CS on the computer screen looks a bit fuzzy and not very clearly defined. If it can be made more solid and bolder it might be better in print?

Anyway, I hope that doesn't sound too harsh...I was just trying to give some thoughts from the perspective of someone who uses t/a's. In our business, they would account for more than 50 percent of coffee sales...so they are well used.

I like to offer this design and catch line

4 X equal size 3D diamonds around the cup
The reason I chose this style is
1] It can be used as a 2 colour
2] Other colours can be added at a later time if wanted
3] Distinctive but simply elegant

The catch phrase I have come up with is
"Coffee Snobs <> Diamonds in the Rough"

Can I claim my cups now  <><><><>   Cheesy

All vaild opinions and some I agree with
Wink

The reason I have thrown this up without much discussion is to find the best design without me steering it in a direction.  Maybe the best design is a new logo, a new font and different colour, single colour or lots of colours.

I'm happy for the CS community to make designs they think are good and we might pick the best of them for the end product or maybe just compose a new design using bits of a few.

By the way, the cup selection process has already happened, high quality triple wall cups that test really well (lots of thermal tests and usage tests so far have all come up trumps).

Also on the volume we are printing we have haggled the printing price to be the same for single colour or full colour (6 colour) process.

A creative think tank is what I hope this thread will become.  There are no bad designs, just some that we might not go for.

Cool

I prefer a simpler design.

I think it would look good on a white cup with various colours for the logo/text.
Or a balck cup with white text/logo.

I'm also rather attached to the current font(s) and logo, but perhaps I'm just a creature of habit.

Or if we want to tweak the fonts, I vote for Comic Sans for
COFFEE SNOBS

And Lucida Calligraphy for the tag.

Perhaps there could be a range of tag lines on the cups.

EG:
Our name says it all
Life is too short for bad coffee
Come on in, the coffee's great
But not so snobby we won't share!
Changing the world, one cup at a time

And...

We will have one design per size... maybe they will be the same or maybe not.

So sadly we cannot get too creative with different slogans.

I'm not a very good graphic designer with pretty things, so maybe the wording and someone can design something to go with it?

My "drawing with the ol' mouse" skills are not great but the idea was a nice line drawing of the coffee tree and, if 2 colours isn't blowing the budget, red for the berries.

Same price for 1 colour as full colour 6 so could even do a photo of the coffee branches in theory.

Dunno, prob a couple of weeks, not a couple of days.  Seeing that we might be paying part prizes for part design ideas I would recommend getting your rough ideas posted early to stake your claim on the idea... we can make 'em pretty later.

From a branding perspective, you really shouldnt change the font or the look of the CS logo...and if you do, then it should be changed completely, even on the website.
The CS logo is something I recognise striaght away when I see it, an example is in bean Scene the second I see the CS logo and font I know it is Andys brand..So its important to keep it that way..

Other food for thought... I think the cup should have a reference to Fair Crack, as its a great cause and should attract people to the website.

OK something quick and simple to start - I'm going with the CS design as other have, but I think that one on each side would get the message across better.

As an aside Andy, in the brief you said cafe owners wanted CS cups, does that mean that somewhere in the design we should refer to coffeesnobs? This is what I took it to mean but clarification would be good for all.

Cheers
Shannon.

+1
i personally agree, theres nothing wrong with the current logo, its simple but elegant and most importantly, it says EVERYTHING IT NEEDS TO.

Shannon's idea above is great, black cup with white logo, 2 logos on opposite sides of the cup, possibly with a small '.com.au' after or under 'coffee snobs' so that someone sitting in their office or cafe trawling the interwebs with their laptop will go, "oh lets see what this is all about."
other than that, its an already recognisable logo, its simple, it gets the cs name out there on something more tangible to people who otherwise wouldnt have any contact.

1. simple
2. elegant
3. effective

Theres my $0.02 haha.   Grin

The idea here is to list a number of coffee types in the background. The word "Coffee Snobs" is spelt out by using a single letter in the coffee type name and giving it a contrasting colour and perhaps an increase font size. I don't think I got it 100% but it gives you the idea.

At first glance the cup would reveal a number all the coffee types and then it would take a while to encrypt the secrete message, Da Vinci Code Style, which is that all red letters spell out "Coffee Snobs".

I agree with the "Keep it simple." concept.

I'd go for a similar layout to Kohee's at Reply #12 but a slight change to the colour scheme. Rather than have "Coffee Snobs" in White, why not make it Gold... Green and Gold has got to be a winner Wink

Okay, here's my effort - as you can see, I'm not a graphic artist!

I've changed the CS Font to stand out a bit more, used coffee beans (taken with my camera and cut, paste and fiddled around a heck of a lot to get it to have a reasonably smooth green background) as the 'O's' and inserted the cup logo on each side.

Personally, I wouldn't have liked to see the little stylised cup logo as a smaller repeated pattern all the way around the whole of the cup from top to bottom, but just couldn't be fagged, sorry! It took me about 3 hours to get this far...!)

Cheers
Di

PS - Mal, great minds and all of that...I hadn't seen your comment until after I posted my artistic 'impression' and had adopted gold for the non-background just purely on the basis that it looked good!

I'm sure its lunchtime somewhere now...

PS: I had another two but lost 'em.  Will redraw them sometime.
One with a torn bag instead of the zip and one with just beans in the bottom third of a white cup.
