Got a cheap grinder from eBay - the Saeco MC2002 for $150 - Sweet!

So thats saved me a bunch because I was looking at the Ibertil at $300! I know the Saeco aint nearly as good, but itll do for now.

    Good basic setup.

Re: What Coffee Equipment do you all have?

    Hi all, heres my contribution.

A Miss Silvia which runs on bottled spring water. (If you saw what comes out of the taps here, youd understand why.) :(
A Rocky doserless. Both are sitting pretty on a S/S two drawer tray.
    An aluminium "coffee training.com" tamper.

The above items were purchased from John Doyle aka Pinot. A quick plug if I may? I cant recommend him highly enough. He took the time to thoroughly explain and demonstrate the workings of the two newest and best editions to my kitchen to me. If anyone is thinking of buying or upgrading, I would suggest that you give John a call, you wont be disappointed. ;D

I currently use the right drawer of the tray as a knock box, but I have a Bang Bang on order. ( I got a strange look from the lady at the local Retravision when I asked for one.)
    A 600ml and 300ml S/S milk ug.
A cordless vacuum cleaner and numerous towels which I have borrowed from the linen cupboard. (Great suggestion John.) ;)

Im still practising my technique, if you could call it that, so I have consumed bucket loads of coffee in the meantime. Mum used to say, practice makes perfect. But in this case, practice makes for not much sleep.
Im off again to practice much to the amusement of my OH. ;D

    All the best,
    Steve

    Wow Bill!,

You look to be almost in the Geographical centre of Australia. Great to have you in the group and by the look of the equipment list you have, you are pretty serious about making great coffee.

    Cheers,

Re: What Coffee Equipment do you all have?

    Rancilio Rocky Doserless
    Rancillio Silvia
    Tiffany popcorn popper
    Aluminium Tamper (excellent) $20
    Tray for the Rancillio (fantastic)
    Grouphead brush cleaner
    Backflush insert
    thermometer
Gaggia MDF (selling this although it is a fine grinder and built to last)

VERY pleased with my equipment. I honestly could not imagine better espresso than what I make. I mean if you cant be a legend in your own mind where can you be one?

Espresso making is pretty subjective but I am just so pleased with it all and it never ceases to give me pleasure each time I make one. I am finding I am making more cappuccinos lately. I also use the Silvia now that it is winter to make Horlicks and Cocoa milk drinks. I love the way I can froth them and it gives them character you cant get using a microwave to heat them. Nice foam.

Dont like microfoam much, seems only to be useful for shaping hearts in your latte. I like real foam which has some body. The Silvia will do both though and I can do both on demand with about 90% success rate. Now and then I still stuff it up.

Dont bother temperature surfing. Surfing is for the beach.

The cheap aluminium tamper is brilliant and I dont see why people spend big on them although I suppose one with a rosewood handle would look nice.

    Anyway, time for a coffee.

Re: What Coffee Equipment do you all have?

Well, thanks mostly to the posts on this website I have recently acquired:

    Rancilio Silvia
    Rancilio Doserless Rocky

And just to take up more bench space:

    Sunbeam Bang Bang

They have to be the best purchases Ive made in a long time. Spent a bit of time researching before buying and the Silvia was an obvious choice. Took me a while to save up - had to give up my morning cap from the local cafe for about 8 months to save the cash but worth every bland cup of instant forced down during that time. I think the pre-pour prep and post pour cleaning take up more time than the drinking but I reckon thats half the fun. :D

    Cheers all.

    please dont laugh...

    • sunbeam cafe crema - replaced the baskets so its not crema enhanced
    • de longhi kg100 grinder - opened up many times and tinkered with to grind finer
    • sunbeam knock box
    • plastic tamp - seems to do the job ok
    • koziol cup (150mls) very sexy! not cheap though
    • pont cups - sexy and cheap
    • kitchen trolley from ikea to put it all on/in
    • oh yeah, and a cheap popper from woolies that just wont burn out ... unlike the last one ...
Update: the delonghi is moving out to my office ... as of next monday, it will be replaced by a mazzer mini !!!!!!!!!!! Im very stoked right now.

(If only i could get the sunbeam to move out, and an HX machine to move in very cheaply...)

    Love this site!
Ive been following the passion which people express through these pages and now I understand that for years Ive been coffee snobbing in isolation.
    Here is what Ive had/got:

1986-1997 - Baby Gaggia - great white machine: solid, heavy, great steamer...looks a bit retro now, would love to fix it if I could source the parts (somethings broken - water leaks all over the group when the pump is switched on)

1997-current - Gaggia Classic. Not as solid or reliable as the Baby, but makes a very reasonable brew

Plastic tamp that came with the machine (sorry!)

    Gaggia MDF

    Gaggia base

Under sink knockbox/receptacle for scraps (which end up in the compost bin)

Small stainless milk jug Ive had since the 80s

The next frontier: roasting my own beans!
    Thanks for the idea!

    Hi Joe,

Welcome to CoffeeSnobs and the road to coffee nirvana.

Regarding your retro Baby.... Might just be a gasket or a seal? If so, youd probably be able to source suitable alternative replacements, or make your own from suitable material(s). Might be worth a go to keep a "classic" machine like this Baby pushing on a for a few more years yet?

    Cheers,
    Mal.

Re: What Coffee Equipment do you all have?

just picked up the maz mini today ...

    ... WOW!

Ive only pulled six doubles, the first was way too fine - nothing came out. The second was a blonde gusher. The third looked nice but still too fast. The third, fourth and fifth shots got progressiveley better - nice doppio ristrettos ... started drinking them at the fourth shot (WOW! So velvety!) And the sixth i pulled for a double latte. I realise now that ive never had real tiger flecking in the cup, because it was there in the fifth and sixth shot ... this is such a good Day!!!!!!!! This grinder is the best!!!!!! I LOVE MY MAZZER MINI!!!!!!!!

Re: What Coffee Equipment do you all have?

    sorry mal...

...day 2 with the mini: still experiencing the same blissfulness, though im realising why a lot of the yanks on coffeegeek do lots of mods to the doser - this thing is messy, and hard to brush out! I guess thats because im used to the delonghi/solis, which contained most of its mess in that little plastic container.

is it wrong to have a soft spot for my old grinder? Its so clapped out, ive had the burrs touching for months just to get a decent grind for espresso, but i cant bear the thought of selling it/giving/throwing it away. I might retire it to my work grinder for when i have a little plunger coffee there...

Re: What Coffee Equipment do you all have?

    Hi again mattyj,

From what Ive read on CoffeeGeek and a couple of other sites, the Mazzer Mini doser can be modified pretty simply to overcome the shortcomings you mention.

I was actually talked out of getting an MM Doserless when I had the opportunity once.... should have went with my gut on that one. Oh well, never mind, my Rocky is doing a damn fine job and Ive no complaints with its performance on any front. But, you know what its like, the chance to own a MM was there and I stumbled at the opportunity.

Re: your old Solis/DeLonghi grinder, I wouldnt get rid of it. You just never know when and how it might come in useful. As you may have guessed, Im somewhat of a hoarder and hate parting with anything that has potentially useful properties.

Anyway, glad to hear that you are enjoying the MM so much. The corollary about the importance of using a good (or great in the instance of the MM) is very true and can never be overstated. Have fun,

    Cheers,
    Mal.

    Hey Mal,

I bought some new brushes today - one is a little kiddy size (so says the reciept) pastry brush, which just happens to fit the chute into the doser perfectly. Ive also added a bittle bit of sticky velcro to two of the doser vanes to sweep out the grinds better, and i pop a little cup on top of the adjustment screw to try and stop coffee getting on top of the vanes.

Oh yeah, i also took out both finger guards inside the doser. Works good now!

Re: What Coffee Equipment do you all have?

    Heres my first go. ;)

Faema Family (replaces my La Pavoni EspressoSi that I bought in 1993 or 4) and a De Longhi KG100.

Its funny seeing all this interest in good coffe and coffee equipment now. Back in early 90s, there didnt seem to be too many machines for the domestic market (not that I could afford anyway). I thought my EspressoSi was the bees kness just because it sorta looked like a espresso machine! It had a handle/portafilter! Anyway, it worked fine for me up until a few months ago.

About the time I bought the Pavoni, my uncle aquired the Faema...only fitting really as he was probably getting paid ten times as much as me so the purchases were probably relative if you know what I mean. I recall the Pavoni being around 4 to 500 which even in our low inflation times probably turns out to be more than the price of a Silvia these days. Cant tell you the price of the Faema but Id think it would have been considerable.

The Family was Faemas entry into the domestic scene, about 12 years ago, maybe more. It is a class machine, built like a tank with brass internals and the whole 58mm and 3 way valve shebang. I believe Cantarella brought them in and this is where my uncle picked it up from in WA. It also came with a sensational doser grinder and tray which my mum has (Darn!). Although the espresso machine has been in the shed for a few years the grinder has had daily use and its still going strong. I recommend you keep your eyes open for one as you may be able to pick one up for a song. Replace the burrs and youre away.

Anyway, although the coffee from the Faema is great it could do with a service as it was sitting in my uncles shed for a while (he reckons hes "upgraded" to a Saeco Royal). Problem is, all I get is strange looks when I mention it. Happy to hear from any of you who know of this machine (tips/tricks) and anyone westside that can service it.

    Great forum, great coffe.

    My second crack,
    John.

    John,

Hi there. It wasnt hard to workout who that post was from!

Ive benefited a lot already from being a member of CS and I am getting to know some great people all over Australia and Minnesota (Java-full of coffee-phile).

I think your Faema will be fine once you wash the rat turds through the boiler. I would suggest inviting some friends over for a jolly good cupping. :)

Hey, John, deesa coffee shee taste a bit like a rat sheet, you tryin to poison me, huh...

Well, I was ... the sunbeam has started leaking hot water from the edge under the control knob/espresso-steam switch. Im sure its a leak from the thermoblock to the switch, like a stuffed seal from all the pressure i put it under (regularly choking the pump etc) and im sure its only a $5 part (and probably $50 labour - these things are a PITA to get inside), but with tax-time coming up, and an expectedly large tax return ... I could be in E61 heaven sooner than I thougt!

    Perfect timing, sunbeam!

Well, after the weekend get-together at Yandina and having the opportunity to directly compare my Breville ESP6 with a Spidem boiler and an ECM Giotto, the speed, ease, and taste of the Giotto got the better of me...

So I am very proud to announce the safe arrival of an ECM Giotto to our large household yesterday!

The kids have been lining up (mind you for only a short waiting period now) with their requests and I have been in Nirvana with the new baby.

Mum and dad are doing very well - although slightly twitchy from caffeine overload but hey its all good!

Re: What Coffee Equipment do you all have?

Hi all. *This is good enough a place for my first post. *My setup is:

San Marino Compact CKXE (a small heat exchanger machine with a 2L stainless boiler, volumetric dosing, thermosyphon group head and a specially fitted steam wand taken from a larger Divina model). *I chose this small commercial over the home heat exchangers in the same price range (Giotto etc) owing to better construction (thicker gauge pipes and panels, commercial parts), a larger, more scale-resistant boiler, service backup, and the ability of the machine to measure the size of espresso shots. *I use the internal tank and Brita filtered water but am considering installing the plumb in option. *I love it - 30 beautiful kilos of stainless steel coffee making brawn! *Heres a pic: *http://www.sibonis.com.au/ckxe.jpg

Cunill Tranquilo grinder (see my review on Coffeegeek). *

    Sunbeam Bang Bang knock box.

With the grinder measuring the coffee amount and the San Marino measuring the amount of water, Im free to focus on the beans and how fine I grind them. *Thats enough variables for me. *I loved my old Silvia but there were just too many variables to produce consistently repeatable good results.

    Howdy Daniel,

Your review of the the Tranquilo on CG was one of the reasons I bought one. Nice to have you on board.

    Hi SB,

Hmmm, that San Marino sure is one sweet espresso machine. Very envious. Welcome to the fray,

    Cheers,
    Mal.

Thanks Stephen. I came across this site by accident and Im really glad theres an Australian forum. I toyed with the idea of making one myself (at www.shortblack.net ) but its no longer necessary. In fact Ill link up my old site to point to this forum.

Do you like your Tranquilo? If I was buying today Id probably still choose it over the competition. The electronic Mazzer looks lovely but it wouldnt fit under my cupboards.

    Hi SB,

Its not a well known/stocked machine in most specialist shops. *The San Marino name is the Aust/NZ badge for CMA, the Italian manufacturer of most of the machines you see in coffee shops. *Wega and Astoria are other brands in the same stable. *

When I upgraded from a Silvia my short list was the San Marino, The Giotto Premium and the La Valentina - all in the $2,000 to $2,500 range. *I agonised for ages! *In the end Alan Frew told me that choosing a small commercial over a "pro-sumer" was a no brainer - especially on long term concerns like service and local support.

Locally the San Marinos are serviced by Saeco, who have good parts supplies on hand and mobile service vans. *My last service (replacing group seals, steam seals and escape valves, shower screen and cleaning the gauges) cost $115 including the service call and all parts. *Thoroughly worth it too.

And dont be too envious - a lot of machines out there can make excellent coffee. *The main advantages of heat-exchanger machines are consistency and (often) superior steaming, once you have your settings and technique down pat.

Funny that. I bought a Mazzer Mini Electronic a couple of weeks ago :)
The Tranquilo is a great grinder and for the money I think its very hard to beat. Im pretty sure I can still get them for $330, but Id have to check. Im not sure the Mini E is three times the grinder but the law of diminishing returns can be suspended now and again :)

I havent checked the availability in Australia, but it seems Mazzer has a new shorter hopper http://www.home-barista.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=292 a couple of posts down theres a photo of the shorter hoppers.

On the machine front, I ended up buying the Diadema Junior. Only downside is that I cant see a need to upgrade anything now.

-San Marino CKX (non-electronic version), dont have the plumbing for it, so I use a kambrook filter and fill the tank up
-Mazzer mini grinder (due in within the next few days)
-Home-made PVC bang bang (old roller from a dead fax machine for the banger bar)
    -SS convex tamper
-No trendy crockery to drink from except some cheap espresso cups from the old Breville POS

Hi everyone, new here obviously. 8-)

Looking to learn a bit more from the snobs in this joint and am glad i found an aussie forum. Im from sydney and have just splurged on an ECM Giotto Premium with rocky grinder which was an upgrade from a la pavoni eurobar with gaggia grinder. would be interested to talk to other giotto owners who can help me thru the learning curve.

also have a lapavoni pro lever machine for weekend playing. :)

As of the weekend, I have a Unico Splendor and Macap M5 grinder. Now need to offload the Saeco VV and Isomac grinder.

Am told that I should expect a Pullman tamper for my forthcoming birthday.

Have a B&D popper, and a number of illy collectoin cup sets (mostly espresso).

Go the Macap M5! Go FC!?!?

Id really be interested in what you think of it Patrick.

I have had mine for just over 3 months now and love it. I also have semi-regular use of a Mini Mazzer at my Roasters place and can assure you that the Macap is definately the 911 of Grinders...Mazzer being the BMW M3.. :o

    Regards,
