Re: What Coffee Equipment do you all have?

I own a saeco incanto delux.
I used to own a pathetic spinning herb grinder which I gave away when I got the auto machine. I regret nto having a grinder now. I regret thinking fully auto was the way to go!
    HELP!
    I dont understand all this.
    PLease answer me honestly.
Will this silvia machine which I hear so much about give me the short black quality Ive tasted in a cafe- with al the fruity nuances???
Or should I just stick with this machine that is only really good for parties of people who wouldnt know good coffee from international roast.
I dont kow much about the art... but I want to learn.
I know what I like in an espresso- lively intesity, full mouth feel and glorious aftertaste...
    Anyway- yeah I got a saeco. :)

Well... yes, but it depends on more than just the machine.
The quality and freshness of the coffee, the grinder, the cleanliness of the machine all contribute.
Also, if you are coming from an auto to a Silvia, you need to factor in the person driving a lot more.

Are you willing to dump the Super-Auto for a new combo?
    What is your budget?
The Silvia is good, but it may be worth considering other options as well if the budget allows.

Re: What Coffee Equipment do you all have?

At the moment I havent got a budget! That is a negative nto a positive. One thing for sure I am in no rush. Ill keep the auto as it quickly makes coffees for others int he house and if we have a party, But for the future I want to know about what Im getting into. I hate the fact that there is virtually no manual control over the machine. I want to decide how fine I grind, how hard I tamp and how long I pull the espresso for!!
I guess Im here to be educated- so go for it. Tell me about the heat exchange thingy- BTW is this the right forum for this discussion or should we move elsewhere?
Thanks for getting back to me.

Probably a good idea to start a new thread in this forum.
I like the Silvia/Rocky combo, but if you are likely to make a lot of milk coffees, a HX machine would be great (dollars allowing).

Re: What Coffee Equipment do you all have?

Gudday. Im new around here. Its good to find a bunch of guys and gals who are into coffee as much as me.
    Anyway, my gear.

Machine - An old (and I mean old) Delonghi Bar M30 - never been descaled (I know, I know!!) still going strong after 11 years. I know it like the back of my hand, so Im getting surprisingly good results for an entry-level machine. Im waiting for it to finally die so I can get me a La Cimbali Junior D1, though!
Grinder - After my 2 year old Delonghi KG100 cacked itself i shouted myself a La Cimbali Uno.
Tamp - Sad, I know, but just the plastic thing that comes with a Cimbali Domus.
Plus various miscellania, stovetop pot, bodum press, Italian brown tulip short espresso & capp. cups

Im only just getting into this seriously, so please dont diss my gear :) Wife & kids to support, too!

Bezzera BZ35 (1 group, fully automatic)
    Mazzer Major Grinder
    La SanMarco SM90 Grinder
    Various Tampers
    Bottomless Portafilters
    Bunn G1 Bulk grinder
Grindmaster 250 dual hopper portion grinder

    Pitchers, knockbox, digital scale, etc.

(Yeah, my kitchen looks a bit commercial - oddly, my wife doesnt seem to mind the lack of counter space...)

Re: What Coffee Equipment do you all have?

Hiya people, Just registered today. Ive been looking around this site for a few days now and have learnt alot from you so far.
I just recently got back into my coffe addiction, it was the A Current Affair story on Coffee machines that sparked my interest again. Its been in the back of my mind to buy a new coffee machine, so ACA made me go and have a look at the Sunbeam EM6900, purly because of its price and the fact its a twin thermo block. Also bought a EM0410 Grinder as well.
So far so good with this machine, before that I had a krups Nespresso machine for quite a few years, and I sadly have to admit to you guys that at this stage I prefer the Nespresso format, the Arpeggio blend was to die for. Plus the convinience of the nespresso system is great, the manual way is far to much of a hit and miss system for a novice like me, but Im sure I will learn as i go. i just got i the mail the 7g filter basket from Coffee parts and it has made a difference already, plus I also got a milk temp probe and a rubber matt for knocking the PF on the bench. Still trying to get a good micro froth in the milk, it too is a hit and miss affair, as I only drink cappucino, its important for me to get it right. I have never delveloped a taste for straight shots. Ive only tried so far a few blends, one from a coffe wholesaler here in Canberra, a Espresso di Manfredi by Piazza dOro, not to bad at all. Also for the Missus, a Gloria Jeans blend called Mudslide, great when you get it right :)

Already i have my eye on a Expobar Minore, a friend of mine who works at the coffee wholesaler showed me it the other day :)
I also want to attempt to do some home roasting, so that will be interesting ;)

    Cheers,
    Simon

    Doserless Rancilio Rocky
    Reg Barber SS tamper
Variety of 4 oz graduated shot glasses
20 oz SS frothing pitcher with dial thermometer
    Bodum glass jars for bea
Type T bead-style thermocouple probe on brew screen
Omega digital thermometer (for measuring brew temperature)
No knock box (expensive SS trash can now has some nice dents)

About 4 different sized Stove top espressos,

Old "Black & Decker "Cuppacino"" (produces the same coffee as the stove tops for more hassel...),

"Solis" Type 166 grinder (the one that seems to be also delonghi and a few others if you know what I mean),

Imex roaster (Broken sadly attempting to fix),

    Cast iron pots (for roasting),

Enormous s/stainless steel bowl and heat gun (for roasting).

Expired coffee importers licence from Tonga, but thats another story.

Re: What Coffee Equipment do you all have?

    Hi all

I have a Sunbeam EM6900 and bought the grinder EM0480 at the same time, thanks to recommendations from this forum.
I use fresh beans from Alan Frew and have a ball testing different blends. I learnt a lot from this forum and from the coffee appreciation course, I think Sunbeam is doing the right thing and DO NOT deserve the negative comments I read here and there. My machine is (touch wood) perfect and am very happy with its performance.
We drink mainly long blacks, so steam performance is not to important.
    Cheers, Dick

Re: What Coffee Equipment do you all have?

Hi Iam a new member and it has been a bit daunting to decide on what coffee machine to buy after my old Breville blew its top and ended in the trash bin.
After reading choice magazine and researching your *pages on problems that various coffee machines were having. And what was available in our area *I decided on a Seaco Aroma coffee machine and a Delongie KG100 grinder. They will arrive next week and I am lookink forward brewing my own coffee again. I am hopeing that the Saeco will do a better Job.
    Well here is to coffee.

    hi all
brett from winmalee blue mountains just joined- will be interested to see how the forum runs- hopefully a bit more relaxed about contrary opinions than coffeegeek!
    i have
old bezzera 2 group- free gift which im renovating- what a lovely forgiving old machine it is
ecm botticelli- a lovely update on the silvia- wonderful espresso but the 400ml single boiler may be a bit large- hard to get rid of all water before steaming, but a beautiful machine and small enough to take on trips
cunill el tranquilo- dosidoro - the doser one- a fantastic 2nd hand one from ian vigiers at blue mountains coffee roasters
cheap stainless steel tamper from caffe bianchi- looking at a pullman one or the s/s one from coffeeparts
little knock box- now whats that name- grindenstein- great but too small fro the number of coffees i do

Re: What Coffee Equipment do you all have?

    Time for an update ;D,

Recently acquired what I now know to be a Bezzera "Mini Bar" Single Group, Rotary Pump, 2.2 Litre Boiler machine in absolutely excellent condition. In essence it is mechanically very similar to the current BZ-35. Still have the Mokita but will soon be on the market and still have my Rocky D/L which Ill keep (for now ;)). Roasting duties are still performed by a number of poppers and use a home made bean-cooler based on a cardboard box with a bathroom ventilation fan mounted on it.... does a good job. Apart from a range of stretching jugs, measuring spoons, stirrers and goodness knows what else, thats it. ::),

    Cheers,
    Mal.
