Thats a nice sentiment g. *Did you know that FairCrack donations can be made at any time and for any amount? *All one needs to do is go to Buy Brown or Buy Green and its listed under "Other Stuff".

1 its a great idea
2 im getting so much enjoyment from cs
3 the coffee is very good value and would still be if we doubled our donation

G, im not sure if you realise but you can purchase/donate straight into the FairCrack fund at any time without purchasing beans
Its a terrific project and i just love reading the feedback and looking at the pics :)

Bente has found the perfect place for the second pulper to go. I have started a new thread for it.
http://coffeesnobs.com.au/YaBB.pl?num=1224458598
The Pulpery at Rononi is open!
Bente tells me that she heard some farmers believe that they will be paid upon delivery of cherry which of course they wont. *This concept is new to them so Bente is letting them know how it will work.
Hi Andy
Here are todays pictures
As I had expected there were more spectators than
Farmers for delivery....
Since this is totally new to them, they are very cautious.
But one brave lady *brought her coffee ....and everyone was watching .....
Next week, they will have gotten the hang of it....
They did a great job on the house !!! It looks all bright and even from inside its all clean
All floors repaired ..... On Monday they will put up the fence....
Because as soon as the first coffee needs to be in the sun *for drying, they must have a fence for better security.
So the whole exercise of today, was to make them believe that this is actually happening :-)
Well see if it works !!! I know it will ...eventually ....
Its like bringing money to a bank, when you do not know how a bank actually works.....

The above pictures were taken on Friday, the excitement of the very first bean delivery and the nervious wait to see how it will go.
Over the weekend they have collected more than 700kg of cherry and Bente tells me that the coffee on the racks looks very good too!
Today we had a meeting in Rononi and a group of people was chosen that should Be responsible for everything concerning the Central Pulpery.
Below is the newly elected "board of coffee growers"...

We also have some GPS coordinates for the nerdy ones who can use them the next time they want to walk from Australia to Tanzania

Thats really excellent Andy 8-); talk about "From little things, BIG things grow." Sounds like Bente is providing significant inertia to get everyone involved and participating. 700Kgs is certainly nothing to sneeze at though....
Mal.
This just keeps on getting better. Im going to have to start roasting my own coffee just so I can get involved in Bean Bay and make a bigger contribution.
Please pass on our thumbs up Andy.
Thanks for the co-ordinates Andy.
This is all great news.

well i would be interested in knowing how far the lady carried that 28 kg on top of her head :o
thanks for the feedback, the pics are great :)
Darren
Yeah... we had the same thought here. I move several tonnes of beans around the place each month but not very far and certainly not on my head!
I think that lady is great, she was the first local farmer to try this new processing concept and her trust has opened the flood gates. Within 3 days the central pulpery processed their first tonne of cherry and I hope it serves them well for years to come.
It will be interesting to hear how much difference this early processing makes in the cup too.
Wonderful news Andy and great to see such quick progress. I also appreciate the updates and photos from Bente as Im sure everyone else does. I hope we are able to continue to contribute in whatever way possible.
We will sponsor a pulper in more of the southern Kilimanjaro villages... when the Aussie dollar is a little healthier (so more of it gets there!)
Andy, i noticed you mentioning a little about the process.
So from what i worked out in your posts the farmers themselves process the coffee along with a chosen representive from the committee ?
they are then given a receipt for the amount processed and once it hits the drying racks it then becomes the responsibility of the committee alone or do the farmers still help ?
then it is sold to a broker and the money is divided accordingly ?
Darren
Yeah, sumfin like dat!
As I understand it... The committee will run the central pulpery, schedule time on the pulper for the farmers, maintain it and manage its usage.
The collective volume of processed and dried beans will be sold to the mill or a broker and the receipt will become their percentage of the sale.
It looks like a great system for small holding farmers who would have previously sold unprocessed cherry for a fraction of its processed bean worth.
There is a chance that the two villages will differ in process as they will have their own local coffee committee to determine how it works best for them.
This is absolutely amazing! Just to get it straight - the pulper removes the flesh from the bean? Which then needs to be dried? At that point it is literally a green bean just like we receive?
A big, big congrats :) please keep the photos coming!
Thats really really cool! Well done!
Andy, congratulations - this is a brilliant move for Fair Crack.
I was away and missed all the fun but very impressed with what youve helped achieve.
I expect to hear from a steady stream of CS-ers visiting Tanzania over the next few years, ostensibly to look at the magnificent Kilamanjaro but really to see the coffee pulpers :)
Off topic replies have been moved to [link=http://coffeesnobs.com.au/YaBB.pl?num=1231043857#3]This Thread[/link]
I have taken a while to reply to this, but I am so proud to know that we have contributed something so important.
All I want to know now is if we are going to be able to sample some of the coffee we have enabled these people to process???
I think I have answered that more than once (maybe not this thread) but the punchline is maybe.Originally Posted by 2F36202A2D2722430 link=1222013354/73#73 date=1232964853
If we can get some of the coffee one day we will but that cannot be the reason that we help people around the planet... we do it because its a good thing to do.
8-)
An idea to crank up the fund - auction off some stuff like the hessian sacks the beans are exported in to keen CS members who will proudly fork out so they can gloat to their mates as they sip the local brew, admiring the decoration...
Alternately, FC auction #3 http://coffeesnobs.com.au/YaBB.pl?num=1231820552Originally Posted by 6C6B6F6C6B6F6C6B6F606B7C0E0 link=1222013354/75#75 date=1233045772
Gloat with Dennis real instant and a whole host of goodies. Bidding closes on Friday. The bid is still well under what the booty is worth ;)
