I'd suggest having a play with different ones to find what fits your hand/tamping technique best

Tampers are quite personal, best to check out in person to feel/see it and also make sure it fits your hand.

In the interim, people have polished the base of the sunbeam tampers with wet and dry to give a better feel when polishing the puck.

Have you been to Dimattina in Osb Park? They used to stock some Pullman tampers.

The Cafelat ones here also feel very good and are great quality/value.

I got a pullman barista tamper years ago with a matching basket, a real joy to use.

    Cheers

My 8 year old crocheted this for me after I showed her a Chris Baca clip. (The tamper inside is the stock Alex Leva) I'll update when I get a newie.

i thought the Tamper Cozy was pretty cool though.

Ha, very creative, not sure about the tooth in the palm of the hand, or, does it do it without operator intervention?

Good god I shouldn't look at other peoples tampers, because now I have just ordered a Pesado 58.5 tamper and then of coarse I saw the Pesado basket and IMS Competition Shower Screen, so got all three!

Like the look of this tamper Paul, the wood handle is a thing of beauty, very tactile, it will develop a wonderful patina over a period of time.

They've been talked about for quite a while now. I think the inventor took them to Host Milano last year. Invented and developed by the owner of Clockwork Espresso in the UK. The idea and sales pitch is on their website if you're interested.

Yeah it's fairly pricey. I think that price might be for the limited edition release run and they might end up being a bit cheaper. Probably not enough to ever be on my radar though.

My all time fave Bogav Classic

A wonderful story and collaboration. Gavin purchased a machine and decided to make his own. 3 return trips with me canning his designs for various reasons delivered this and a request that he supply them to me. We had confirmation that it was pretty much perfect when one of the biggies then produced a blatant ripoff of his design at close on 50% premium....

There are probably 500 or so in the wild now. I still use #002 every day and it pretty much ticks all of my boxes. Gavin has #001...

I've got an Impress. These are designed and made here in NZ. This is the standard stainless with Rimu handle model (Rimu is a native hardwood, it's protected so most of the time you see it today it's recycled). The Impress tamper is fairly ubiquitous over here, and I'm not surprised as it's very good value for money at around $50.

I'd love a Rimu handle. Closest I've got to Kiwiana is the paua I've inlaid into my Pullman Big Step.

Here is my collection. The BigStep, Pesado 58.5 and Copper Reg Barber which has a steampunk skeleton watch mechanism I inlaid.

Love the paua inlay Deano! I'll be in nz next month and am planning to order one of the rimu tampers. I'm just over in Preston so send me a pm if you want me to double up my order (although it looks like you're probably sorted for tampers!)

    Evening Pete,

Custom tampers are nice to own, however certainly not a must have, why not buy one of these CoffeeSnobs - BeanBay - Cafelat Coffee Accessories - Cafelat Espresso Tamper - Rubber Wood available right here on Beanbay for $50, it will do the job just fine, and be a vast improvement on the plastic thingo that came with the machine.

If you feel the need for a better basket I suspect a 14 to 18 gram Precision basket from Talk Coffee, a site sponsor, will be a big improvement, I've been using one for some time and prefer them to other more expensive baskets on the market Precision filter basket 58mm- Espresso parts | Talk Coffee

A decent tamper and basket for under $70.

No it won't be worth it at the start, maybe a few years down the track if you've really gotten into coffee and want to be a perfectionist about it (not a bad thing since I'm now at that stage)

As another has said the one on beanbay here is a good option you want one that's a right size for your basket but it doesn't have to be a super accurate fit to get great coffee it's more the bean, technique and machines. At least in my view.

    Hi,

This might be slightly out of topic. Any idea why Pullman and Pesado tampers are so expensive? Do they do better job than, say, a $50 tamper?

    Cheers

Is a hand built ss coffee machine with turned wooden handle fittings worth

more than a plastic, press moulded robot assembled appliance coffee maker?

Lots of things come into play, not the least the costs of producing low volumes of very well made products. :-D

I understand that price does not lie. But do expensive tampers really do a better job? If they do, I may be willing to consider upgrading my $50 dollar tamper

Updated: Just found this Re: Should I Buy a Pullman Tamper?

    It answers my question. Thanks.
