    Reusable Coffee Cup - $539.95

A mate of mine dropped in a present the other day...

It's a "frank green" reusable coffee cup from Optus.

Theory is you buy a cup for $39.95 and then if you are an optus mobile customer (pre pay or post pay) you can then download an app and put up to $500 credit on the "cup".

Then instead of paying for your coffee from your local cafe you can just Visa pay-wave the cup and deduct from your balance.

Cute gimmick but an expensive oops if someone tosses it away though.

I can just see the police rolling their eyes when you tell them someone stole your coffee cup and bought junk at Bunnings with it.

Groan, that's a perfect example of a solution looking for a problem. I've seen payWave chips built into watches, cufflinks, sunglasses, rings, and jackets, but this is too much. So you have to either wait for your coffee to be made before you could pay, or else the barista has to wait till you've paid before you can hand him or her the cup? And then you'd probably just spill coffee all over the POS machine!

You can imagine how many coffee filled pay wave machines the banks will start getting back!

Probably the biggest wallet I have ever seen. I agree they are looking for a problem.

I have one on hold at my old local. Might just be the most practical of the reusables for people who want to chuck it in a handbag etc and not worry about leaks...

Strongly doubt I'll use the paywave functionality though - apps have transactionless ordering and payment under control already; otherwise paywave is only ever a phone or card away...

Shame they've gone down the path of moving credit to an account; totally unnecessary these days with PayPal etc - just debit my account in real time. There's an opportunity cost to having 500 clams sitting in an unused account, quite aside from the security issue.

Actually, being an Optus tie in I'm surprised they don't just use the customer's phone account and add a charge to their next bill. 🤔

You don't earn interest on next bills...

Why wouldn't Optus open it up to taking money from anyone?

Seems like a missed opportunity for them to expand their customers to anyone making transactions.

Maybe they're hoping to lure customers over from Telstra with their groundbreaking cup-based payment system 😉
