Adjusting the grinder - how much do I then discard?

You're dialling in your new bean and you've adjusted your grinder and you then need to discard some beans still at the old setting. How much do you discard? 5gms? 10gms? 18gms? I have a Macap M4D and after all these years I've never worked out exactly how much I should discard. I know this is sort of a retention question. Anyway, what's the general consensus?

Really depends on the grinder. For smaller, domestic types, I would say about a shot's worth after changing the grind. When I'm using a Robur, I dump about 3 shots before using the fresh grind size.

That's why I mentioned the Macap M4D. Perhaps I should have placed this thread in the grinder section.

Simple way to test - switch between two visibly different roasts (maybe sacrifice some filter roast beans), grind until you can see the change in colour, retaining the grounds, then weigh the retained stuff.

My ECM with antistatic grid removed retains a negligible amount, at a guess less than 1g and certainly under 2. I might run this experiment just out of interest, but it's low enough that if I'm switching between blends for milk coffee I don't bother to grind through the last bit of the old blend.

I found with my M4D it was around 10g to clear it out. I programmed the single shot for around 4 seconds for the purposes of clearing out stale grinds also.

With Mythos one and fresh beans i have tried purging and without purge and there is no difference. Towards the end of the bag i find a taste advantage to purging around 4grams, but no extra advantage from purging more

I never worry about it at all...

So long as both batches of beans are considered to be still fresh, I've never experienced a bad result by just pouring the new batch of beans on top of the old and going for it. In fact, I've experienced some very interesting and delightful outcomes that have resulted in my experimenting with blends to provide the same, or similar, result in the cup from that experience...

Nor do I, I single dose and clean up after each shot, there is bugger all left in the grinder to worry about.

I give the M4D a quick (1 second or so) blast before the 1st shot in the morning, but otherwise don't bother about it.

It depends on your basket size I reckon. 15g basket would be more noticeable than a 22g basket. I always spit out 1.5s worth before making the first coffee of the session.

With some strategic mods, I have retention down to less than the minimum grind volume on both of my grinders (ECM V-Titan and Mazzer Kony-E).

    Hi Barri,

Its really just clearing out whats in the burrs and the ejection tube, so really just half a portafilter should be plenty for your grinder.
