    Single Use Disposable Cup Tax

'Latte levy' could be imposed on UK coffee drinkers to reduce disposable cup waste - ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)

Overdue. It irks me when watching "our great leaders" especially the Pollies, of ALL denominations, clutching single use cups in their early AM journo doorstops. There are so many simple solutions to this problem. The biggest problem is - I know people who "love" the paper cup routine - resistance to change. Some of the same people who used to refer to current popular forms of disposable cups as "baby beakers" in the early days, are the same people who can now not live without them, so there is hope.

Something I hadn't previously thought about, on short contemplation, sounds like a good idea.

Yes agree, there are alternatives to having 'plasticated' paper cups that are reusable. Still have problems with people who take away an espresso - by the time you get to where you're going its cold!!!

Spot on. Just sit down to drink your coffee from something nice. It needn't take that long.

Not a fan of reusable plastic - or glass - cups either.

Problem is not many places provide the facilities to down a quick espresso in the way they do in Italy, such as a counter with stool seats etc. It would also entail additional cup washing etc for them, but that could be their contribution to reducing T/A cups no doubt.

I remember seeing a place in Melbourne that looked like it had the Italian style counter, but can't remember when or where.

I'm with you SBM, have a strong dislike for drinking from cardboard or plastic.

I wont order if a cafe only serves in cardboard, in my mind paper/plastic cups and good coffee are incompatible.

    hi

Patricia, when I'm in the city, is one such place with standing room (only.) I love to go there. You're right though. A bit unusual, sadly.

So are people happy with changing behaviour through a levy, as proposed in Britain?

    I'll start. Yes.

Customers end up paying for enforced change anyway. I would worry about the hit some businesses would take, but it seems that levies work in changing "undesirable" behaviour. This will put pressure on manufacturers to produce something better if the levy excludes cups that meet sustainable benchmarks.

But for the sake of good coffee, I return to my original point. Work at getting rid of the bloody things all together.

I don't find it a problem, order and pay, when it arrives drink it at the counter, works for me.

I don't mind glass or (particularly) the ceramic cups with a silicon lid. Got a few from conferences that do the job quite nicely. And I like to have a slow coffee at my desk while I'm working....and I can't usually do that in a cafe.

Thought you had my name wrong at first , then looked it up, and see they have standing counters.

Its been quite some time since Iíve intentionally had a coffee in a disposable cup when there was an alternative. I actually rarely use take away cups at all, but I have a couple of favourite reusables that do the job quite well if necessary. I can understand some of the resistance from Snobs though as Iíve had to try quite a few different reusables to find ones I like. The bad ones have all sorts of problems - they leak, wrong size, donít insulate well, taste like absolute crap. But thereís good ones out there so donít give up on the idea altogether. And think outside the box, you donít always need a purpose built travel cup to use as a reusable takeaway cup. For example I can actually put a large plastic takeaway lid on top of this old cup that Iíve had since I was a kid-

Iíve only done it a couple of time when making a quick filter coffee at home to take with me, but it shows what can be done. (And yes, I wash and reuse the lid).

I'd put a massive levy on a footy cup without tiger stripes.

    Great idea!

I would have to give them away for personal use as I am sure there are licensing laws re the Tigers logo .

What do you reckon , Espresso , 150ml or 200 ml size?

I will do a run of 72 for Coffee Snobs Tiger supporters only.

    Cheers

    Wow! That's incredible Antony!
    (I don't think you're joking.)

    --------

yesterday I saw someone carrying 6 cups of Axil coffee down to the beach. They must have been at least 15 minutes old by the time they were being drunk...

While I hope they were enjoyed, they must have been getting pretty shabby.

Made this to a size of 2mx1m for a Grand Final party, everybody (100 people?) wanted take it home.
Years ago had my photo (black and white) took with Roger Dean in the early 70's at a Mildura Caravan park (Crossroads? from memory) whilst holidaying there with the parents - I was a die hard Tiger then and had just met a demigod - he signed my stamp album - sigh.
Moved to WA and when the Eagles formed in 86 made the impossibly tough decision to flip a coin on whether to stick with the Tigs or switch to the new kids. West Coast won that day -yes I sorta had long term niggling regrets... Have met soooooo many Eagles players since then, all regrets faded... until AFL 2017- Go Tigers!.... and eagles :-)
