Freeman's need a bigger gong cupboard.

Huge congratulations to the Freeman kids, Sarah, Zed and Tiana.... they've done it again at the Golden Bean!!

5 bronze between them across the two categories and Zed took the gold in the Home Roaster Espresso class.

Andy and Paula must be mighty proud of their achievements and highly amused at the running scoresheet!

Well done to the whole family.

Proud and amused pretty much covers it. The kids had the Monday and Tuesday off school for Melbourne Cup and because the Snobbery doesn't get public holidays they came to work with Paula and I.

3 x Behmor roasters setup in the front room and the kids spent all day doing roasts and mixing blends... and as near as I could see had chaff fights too. When they finished (cleaning up their mess) they blended and bagged them up and we Express Posted them into the comp.

    What they used...

    Sarah -
Espresso - Kenya AAA bold & Sulawesi Blue (Bronze)
Milk - Kenya AAA Bold (Bronze)

    Zed -
Espresso - PNG Mt Ambra (Gold)
Milk - PNG Mt Ambra & Sulawesi Blue (Bronze)

    Tiana -
Espresso - Mexico El Malinal Typica & Sulawesi Blue (Bronze)
Milk - Colombian Volcan Galeras & Yirgacheffe Special Prep (Bronze)

These are all beans in BeanBay that CS'rs have been using and loving, except for the Kenyan which is being bagged this week and will in BeanBay soon.

I'm not sure of the profiles that they used as I was out doing deliveries most of the day but they all dropped the power to 25% (manual P2 on the Behmor) when they heard first crack and pressed "C" for the rosetta reset at the same time... and made a judgement call on when hit cool.

    Thanks Herbie!

Yes, I too meant to say I can see plenty of CS members in all categories (not just the home roasting one) who have done a stellar job to standout from 1200 odd entries.

I can't help but feel proud to see many CS'rs start their roasting journey here and progress over time into commercial roasters winning medals. Brings a tear to the eye knowing that as a community we have taught and encouraged others to do great things.

Andy! You deserve a lot of the credit as well!

Your Zen like, 'suck it and see for yourself', philosophy has rubbed off on all of us.

Inspiring everyone to find their own path, that there are no bad roasts .....only a learning curve to log

    our experiences and lessons on.

I can even remember Mark's first post a few years back......

Congrats to the winners and placegetters.
Those who didnt get a placing should not be disheartened. Just keep roasting and always taste your results til what you like the best, then try again next year.

As for me, I decided on the name when I heard the dirty dancing song on the radio (have always been an 80,s diehard) as I took the first sip of the Koke and it indeed danced on the palate (ie. lively and bright).
Perhaps there should be a coffee flavoured chuppa chup for the most inventive name?
Sarah,s Kenya Taste That sounds like a winner.

I loved the name "Kenya Taste That" and others have commented too. My kids love puns.

Last week I was lucky enough to judge on the Single Origin table for a couple of days and there was one coffee that really blew our socks off. It scored crazy high and of course made the finals.

Initially sweet with fat red berry aromatics, it was bright, crisp and slightly sour then the most amazing thing happened, it did a total U-Turn, the acidity flattened out and it become a rich, velvety caramel sauce. On the judging table it was also described as a dessert... fruit, ice cream, caramel topping... in that order.

I've been roasting for a long time and drinking the stuff for a lot longer and I've never had a coffee that covered both ends of the spectrum so well. I've spent the week telling anyone who listened just how good this was.

In the finals it stood-up against 6 other coffees in two flights as the clear leader. Those 6 coffee in the finals were amazing and any one of them could have won the final any other time but only if this one wasn't in the mix.

It was a long wait till the Saturday night to find out who was the roaster and all the winners... I waited with anticipation as the winner of Single Origin Espresso was announced.

    GRIDLOCK COFFEE
    Finca La Mula

Con Haralambopoulos, long time champion Barista, World Latte Art winner, cafe owner and coffee roaster did a killer job on this exotic (and crazy expensive) bean and it was a well deserved winner. Con was in the room too and was super excited to win the gold.

Well done Con, you totally nailed that one and I feel privileged to have tried it.

Okay, so if it sounds like I'm bragging.... I am!

    UNCLE JOE'S
    Purple Haze

The overall winner of Golden Bean 2015 was Uncle Joe's Purple Haze. For the second year running and for the first time in the competition's history (although others have come close) someone has won two Golden Beans in a row.

An amazing effort to have your coffee standout twice in Australia's biggest coffee competition and judged by your very critical and often opinionated peers.

Mark was kind enough to share some of the remainder of his winning roast with me on Sunday morning as I headed to the airport (thanks heaps Mark!).

First visual impressions are these beans are light, seriously light but in the cup they don't turn sour and green like so many light roasts do. The true roaster skill here is light enough to zing in the cup and roasted enough to remove the chalky acidity and raw broadbean flavours that so many people leave in the cup and call "character" or similar marketing spin.

The aromatics off the grinder are huge, floral, fruity. The initial fruit sweetness is followed by a mid citric zing that is just outside the realms of balance and it dissipates into a creamy mouthfeel before a longer drying finish has you reaching for another shot.

Hugely interesting and complex to work with, the second doppio on the same dose and grind settings "moved" and had a more warm, earthy flavours in the middle before the dry finish. I wouldn't be surprised to see different cupping notes for this one every time it was pulled but so far all were good, they were just different.

Mark tells me that Purple Haze works well in a range of brew methods and it was the same blend in both espresso and milk categories. So far I've only tried doppios of it, seems cruel to put milk in it but I'll try that after I see how it goes in a Brazen as a filter.

Life is good and I feel seriously spoilt today getting to drink some of the best competition coffee in the country, thanks Uncle Joe's!

This was the first time I have entered Golden Bean and was so excited to get a silver medal in the Home Roasted Milk Based category.
I used a Behmor 1600 roaster and combined 50:50 Indian Elephant Hills Monsoon (P2 profile) with China Mt Gaoligong (P5 profile).
Certainly I have found the CS forum very helpful for roasting ideas for different beans.
My roasting journey has been a real family affair, starting with my son roasting coffee in the shed using a popcorn maker with modifications and then he "decided" that the family needed to give me (!) a Behmor roaster for my birthday in 2010 : p. From then until now, I have come a long way from being "scared" to let the roast even get to 2nd crack : ) to being confident enough to submit an entry to Golden Bean!
Thanks Andy - Coffee Snobs have been there all the way.

For anyone in Melbourne wanting to try Mark's winning roasts they are on pour in a range of methods at Alan Chan's

One Origin Coffee shop in Malvern. Google for address.

In a conversation with Mark last year, he related that his success is partly due to something learnt when a 'mistake' was made during a roast...

testament to the fact that there is always something to learn, even when things go wrong and how important it is to taste what you think is

    an error.

I got on to them through the Uncle Joe's Facebook page (Messenger). I was able to order a bag of Purple Haze through there (he emailed me an invoice, then posted beans).
The beans are not at all what I was expecting. In fact, like Andy indicated, it has tasted quite different each coffee I have made. Certainly interesting!

Been an avid lurker on this site for the last month, slowing taking up the wealth of information. Problem is .. now I have the little seed planted .. cant go back to "poor" quality coffees.

Never knew coffee was so complex.

    THANKS CS
