MICE 2017 - Melbourne International Coffee Expo

It's nearly time for MICE 2017!

Melbourne International Coffee Expo 2017 (MICE)

    Where: Royal Melbourne Showgrounds

    When:
Thursday 30th March, Friday 31st March and Saturday 1st April

Time: 10am till 5pm each day.

We will be there, stand #1
(number 1 is a special reservation for the best business in the building... well that's my story anyway)

I'll be doing some demo roasts on the Behmor and should have a couple of brewer demos too.

Swing by, say g'day or even give me a break from talking too much so I can disappear to the loo
(ever wondered why the guy on the stand hops from foot to foot at a trade show, it's not just too much caffeine!)

Hope to see lots of the usual faces in the crowd for our annual catch-up and always welcome the new faces too.

    See you there!

    Andy.

Wish I could make it this year!

Hot tip in the Barista comp - keep an eye on the head roaster at my local, Rudi. Deadset legend and one to watch for sure.

The gotcha with a trade show and a barista comp is while I'm there 4 days I'll typically only get to see 5 minutes of comp... with any luck it's his 5 minutes.

Not many roasters win the barista comp but the last one that did won the world championship too (Sasa).

Had someone ask off-line if the Thursday/Friday "trade days" meant that they could only go on Saturday...

As a member of CoffeeSnobs with an strong interest in the coffee industry you are pretty much an unpaid apprentice, learning the trade and building knowledge so that one day you might become a professional. If you take some pictures and post them in this thread then you are also promoting the event through their media partner (us).

I recon if you put "CoffeeSnob" as your trade you will be fine to enter on Thursday and Friday.

If however you bring a bunch of kids and ask about pod machines then you might be better off coming on the Saturday "public day".

Haha, I went on trade day last year (was away on the weekend...). My work experience shift at a pizza joint with a coffee machine seemed to be accepted

Probably visiting on Saturday. Just a query re car parking: is it worthwhile parking at venue? easy? expensive? Cheers

I just went on line to buy a ticket and you have to enter an ABN. That does make it more difficult.

I really shouldn't have looked on instagram or looked through the guide book.
Some really cool looking gear on show. Really want to go but will have to wait until next year.

Did you ask what our ABN is? That's easy to find... bottom of the BeanBay page.

    So...
we are all setup and ready to go.

Stand looked like this when I got there.
    MICE2017-Stand1.jpg

...and looks like this after unloading the full snob van...

    MICE2017-Stand2.jpg

All ready to go in the morning.

The cool change has come through and Melbourne is cold with a bit of rain, PERFECT coffee show weather and a great place to drink way too much coffee.

Shhh... don't tell anyone but the Brazens will be running the Panama Don Pepe Geisha. We will have one at 92C and one at 94C so you can smell the difference a great brewer can make to an amazing coffee (unlike near every other brewer on the market that can only deliver near boiling 96C-98C water to the coffee and torch it). This is the real reason the Brazen exists, to brew coffee the best way possible and what better test than a pointy-end bean. Use the code word "Pepe" and I'll share some.

Should be a great few days.

Can say that again! Will miss seeing you this year, Andy - the milk jug I picked up last year is still in daily use, though all it means is I have one less thing to blame for my latte art

I'm fortunate enough to have space next to my desk at work where the Behmor Brazen sits proudly waiting to make up the next pot of gold. Shamefully I've been on trips out of the office recently and my work mate has been away too so it's been a little idle there. Will have to do a 600ml batch tomorrow afternoon. Helps me power through Friday afternoon :-)

It was a great day one.
Plenty of excited people around all day, lots of familiar faces, brief chats with many industry friends and met a lot of people for the first time.

Roasted a dozen or more demo roasts of the Indian Elephant AA and every roast looked exactly the same when we tipped it out on the bench. Most people that were seeing the Behmor roaster for the first time were amazed at how consistent it was and how simple it was to get repeatable results.

[200g] / [P1] / [Start] then when you hear 1st crack - press [C] and manual [P2] and press [Cool] with about 30 seconds remaining. Simple process for excellent results even when chatting and distracted.

Brazen pumped out Panamas all day long and as per usual, I drank way too much of it myself... can help but to have "just another splash" while talking. I really should grab a bottle of water but the coffee is so good I always make a pig of myself.

Zed was a star helper on the stand today, he answered nearly every question posed and really understands this gear. He certainly made my life easy.

    Back again tomorrow for more!

Better get hydrated for day two.

It'd be so hard not to indulge - a lot! :-) There seems to be so many great coffees on offer to taste and try. Along-side the great gear to see in action and then there's the comps to watch...

I'm imagining the first aid tent and everyone laying down getting a sedative or a glass of wine.

Oh, any sitings of Compak's PKF / PKR at MICE 2017 ?

Looking at the new kit... I just saw how much the Puqpress M1 + Peak combo sells for... Ouch! Forgotten the Peak was $5k+!

Hmmm... makes second hand Mythos + Puqpress or just a Mythos Plus seem like a good buy.

Just got back from MICE! Fun fun times. My third year so far, and definitely the best year I've been to so far. I didn't make it to the tea expo (totally forgot it was there, but could have gotten a pass to that as well; oh well, next year!)

Highlights, besides chatting with Andy and meeting part of his family:

    • Slayer Steam, my dream machine! Wow. I've yet to make it to a shop with one yet, so it was my first time checking one out. Even better looking in person. Now, they need to just make a single group...
    • Marco Bru - very cool. I'm not a pour over guy, but the clean, clear coffees coming out of there were outstanding.
    • Got a few tastes of Geisha; I did the 5 Senses flight and had some Pepe from Andy. Honestly, some of the best coffee I've ever had.
    • got to play with the pullman chisel and the OCD (v1 and v2). I actually brought my portafilter to see how they worked with my baskets.

Wish I had went on Thursday or Friday (I had a multi-day pass, only went today though due to new kiddo) but it was awesome. We got a few new toys: OCD v2 (liked it better than wedge and price was the same), Tiamo Shot collar, tamp mat, and some latte art tools.

The only problem? I want to start playing with the OCD, but I'm way way too wired. ha!

Might have to wait a day or two still. But it sure looks good.

Ps I'm on detox tea at the moment, so things are looking up. :/

Well I'm still buzzing out sitting in my hotel room, I actually feel a bit strange from pigging out on all that lovely coffee, plus just finished a curry, so maybe quite dry and have curry breath on the plane tomorrow morning. I have to say it was awesome to meet you Andy and the assistant daughter, you guys are so down to earth and can't wait to try the four bags of coffee I bought from you.
This was my first MICE so can't compare, but what a show every thing you could imagine and more, I was just walking around like a kid in a lolly shop.
Ive been to a few places in Australia now and must admit that Melbourne is on the top of the list, from the way the city is to the friendly people.

    grateful to read any reports.

hey. What's that Mr Black drink like? It might just be the thing to get me back on the booze.
The Mr Black is very nice, smooth and lovely coffee after taste, I love it straight with a bit of ice.
Hope your feeling better shortblackman and can make it next year.

Buzzy caffeinated head is rite, I have to be up at five tomorrow morning to catch a plane but don't feel very tiered for some reason.
