    WEBSITE DOWN - 24th March 2017

Well, it's been a crazy 24 hours here.
If you can see this message, then the problem is fixed or you are using old DNS information.

Our domain name registrar Enitica "fell over" at midnight after some flaky service during the day.

Ausregistry and auDA who control all the com.au domains in Australia are working to resolve the problem and I hope to hear some more information soon. The current news is:
    -----------------------

    Enetica outage

Posted by Helen Hollins on 24 March 2017

auDA is aware of a disruption to service with the registrar Enetica and its associated companies. We want to assure you that auDA is working with the registry (Ausregistry) and is seeking clarification from the registrar (Enetica) in order to understand the cause and expected duration of the outage.

As a precautionary security measure we have suspended Enetica's access to the registry.

To be clear, domain names registered with these companies are safe and will not be deleted whilst auDA is investigating, but any .au domain owners who have hosting agreements with organisations other than Enetica or their associated companies, should contact their hosting provider for assistance in obtaining a copy of their website, if you are concerned.

We will keep you updated on the auDA website with news, regularly.

    ----------------

At the earliest chance we will move the coffeesnobs.com.au domain away from Enetica and to another supplier, sadly we can't do that until these guys work out how to move a domain name when the official provider is uncontactable.

    It's a royal mess.

Hopefully it is resolved very soon.

    Resources:

WingePool has a thread on it with the usual amount of speculation, a little fact and an even smaller amount of helpful stuff (but at least people are talking):

Enitica does retail via their brand webcity, their last "we are working on this was 10 hours ago"

I have the domain name transfer in a queue with another provider and as soon as we can we will move it across.

Yep, been back for 15 minutes...
some people will take a little longer as the DNS propagates to other servers around the planet but by morning everyone should be back on.

Lesson to be learnt here is, if you have a major problem like this, tell people you care and are working on a resolution often. The Wingepool thread exploded into 18 pages of noise and will continue to grow. Most of that would have been avoided if they posted a twitter update every hour or so.

Nice to be back and can look forward to a good nights sleep now.

Yeah, saw that one come across one of my lists and when coffeesnobs was down I immediately knew what the issue was

The major lesson that *should* have been learned here is as a domain registrar you really outghtn't put two of your three nameservers on the same network segment (especially not the first and second)... Because redundancy in the same location, probably on the same infrastructure isn't

This cockup has also had flow on effects on various other companies who are either using or reselling Enetica services, for example webcity is copping a flogging in the media as a result of this.

I'd suggest that after you move your services away from Enetica it might also be prudent to invest in a DNS seconding service with another supplier, always good to have diversity in these things and seconding is pretty cheap

I hear you and agree separate network DNS is good but... regardless of which subnet the nameservers are located on, if the SOA cannot be read at the top level then the nameservers are never looked for. This was a rare problem at the TLD which appears to have been handled pretty badly. 36 hours later and only some functionality is back, domain owners can't logon to their accounts or make any changes.

oh... and webcity is a division of enetica. Enetica = wholesale, webcity = retail (sorta) but yes, I'm sure a lot of people are copping it today for things they didn't do.

The rest of the week will be spent by all those people moving to a new provider.
