Project: Upgrading my Mignon, automatic weight based dosing

    Hi all,

I’ve been the happy owner of an Eureka Mignon for about a year now.
For me, one of the biggest drawbacks of the machine is the very inaccurate automatic dosing option. So, the geek in me came out and I started playing with some electronics and am almost done with this little device:

It links to the grinder and overrides the grinder’s own ‘start switch’, giving me the exact desired weight of coffee every time.

I chose to go overboard and not go for a time based setup but for a weight based setup. The device should be accurate to about 0.5 grams and allows 2 presets to be programmed, one for single shot and one for double shot use.

I feel it’s time to share this with the world. Feedback is very welcome!

These are CG images, no? When are you making the real thing?

    Hi there,

Yes, these are renders. The pcb's for the elecrtonics are ordered and should arrive in the next few weeks. The housing I will 3d print soon too... So I expect to have something that looks like the renders really soon!

The software has been done in proof-of-concept mode, so that will take some playing with.

You will need a funnel or quite a bit of coffee grounds will miss the filter basket.

Hey Jojos. Yes, I'm aware I'll need a funnel, I might play with the distance between the porta-filter and the grinder a bit first, but the mignon is a bit of a messy grinder.

Messy and clumping on fine grind is well known. Any ideas on reducing the grind retention of the Mignon?

Hi Daaf All the best with your idea.

Be interested to know if this idea may also be adaptable... your electronics connect to on/off grinder activation switch?

@JojoS, Yes, the clump crusher in the mignon is less than ideal, I'm thinking about opening up the grinder and seeing if it can be optimized somewhat. Else a funnel will work.

@matth3wh, the Mignon has a connector on the mainboard where the activation switch connects. I'm using that. What do you mean by adaptable? The same logics could be used control any other grinder, given that it has a way to hookup / override the activation switch. The housing would need to be adapted to fit another grinder. A universal housing would be ideal but I'm not sure if there is a single design that would fit many grinders...

Very interested to see how you go with this, sounds pretty interesting!

Ive been using the mignon for a couple years now and I find it's pretty good with regards to mess and grind retention.
