All this talk of Huehue in the cupping thread, I roasted up 900gms again this morning.

Took it to just on second crack at around 211C; roasted evenly and slightly darker than what I remember from last time.

Re: Whats in my coffee roaster this week

Ive managed to get my hands on a few different green 2010 CoE beans (including my beloved Honduras Pino De Oro) so theyre next on my roasting agenda.

Given the cost, im rather nervous about it all, especially since ive no guidance about how to roast these particular beans and cant really afford a real trial and error roast.

Any suggestions on how best to tackle unfamiliar (and expensive) beans?

Ask the supplier for some tips, follow your instincts, dont burn em, and dont do the premature ejection thing.

The latter is the failure I hear most often from people who are nervous (Im still talking about roasting coffee).

    Thanks for the suggestions, Dennis.

The supplier is a rather large (and getting larger by the day) Melbourne based cafe/roastery who whilst able to use their burgeoning empire to source some wonderful beans, inevitably lacks the hands on approach you see from the smaller, boutique roasteries around town.
Given all that, its hard to pin down who in such a big company actually does the roasting.

I know a couple of more accessible guys that roast one of these CoE beans for their cafe but obviously theyre roasting on a much grander scale than i.

One of the CoE beans still hasnt arrived in cafes but the other two appear at a few places so i can at least go in and get a visual guide in terms of roast depth, but outside of that im at a loss.

    Haha.
Ive got a pretty reliable roasting profile that generally allows me to get relatively close to the roast depth im after without many major slip ups, although im often not 100% happy with the results in the cup.

1kg Peru de selva on a nice sunny Adelaide morning.* ** First time trying this bean so will be interesting to see how it cups.

Seemed to take a bit longer from first crack to second crack than what I was expecting, but a nice even roast in the end.

eaasily the best looking harrar roast ive ever done and also the least weight loss

600g green became 520 brown taken to before second crack.
did the same sort of profile that worked for the longberry

i separated into 2 bags so that i can open 1 at 10 days and the other at 14.

1kg 50/50 blend Yirg and Yemen Bani.

The Peru Deselva was a little underwhelming, so back to something I know wont disappoint....* *Will be a struggle to wait for a week before opening the bag.

1kg Kone Ka, out in the shed on a cold drizzling Adelaide morning.

Im so slack I ran out of beans yesterday, so a bit of a crisis to get roasting again asap... :D

first crack was quite early, below 200C, second crack at about 212.

A very nice even roasting bean, but requires a bit of attention between first crack & second crack...

I did fours lots, two Peru, one Limmu and a Bourbon, all 100gm, amazing thing is that there was hardly any smell to start off with, a day later and they all have a very strong smell.

on various days this week i have roasted the following:

    Ethiopia Ghimbi
    Ethiopia Harrar Star
    Nicaragua La Gloria
    Bali Danau Batur
    Bolivia Green Mountain
    Costa Rica San Isidro
    Yemen Bani Ismail

all 600g roasts trurning into roughly 500 or so

wasnt happy with the last harrar star so tried a different profile this time, also roasted the costa rica then read knock box saying its a hard bean so might be doing that one again sometime soon

this morning i roasted the latest yirgacheffe. first time trying it...

    600g became 520 brown

tried to follow some tips given in another thread, profile as per the graph. i was going for a light cs8 roast to see what all the floral is all about but it actually looks darker so i guess i will see in a week. perhaps yirg goes darker than other ethiopians? normally 213 with other beans on my setup would show a lighter looking colour

yes indeed. I roasted the last of my bean stash before the rain on Saturday - nowhere undercover to roast at our place and I didnt fancy the rain + heatgun combo. I have trouble enough getting my roasts even as it is. I used up the last of my Guna Limmu :( and the few remaining beans of the wonderful Java Ijen from last month :(

But never mind... new beans collected from Fiefys today! Cannot wait to try the Yemen Bani Ismail.

Re: Whats in my coffee roaster this week

On Sunday I roasted the first of my Yirgacheffe Special. It was also my first attempt to roast to a profile and Im waiting somewhat impatiently for another day or so before trying it.

Got the Android CoffeeRoaster saved data if anyone wanted to see it, but basically:
    17c ambient, 150gm start weight
Aimed for steady rise to 100c, then slightly increase pace nearer to first crack at 10min very slow to second at 16 min and pull 30sec in.
    Actual results:
Temps were about 10-15 degrees behind target from 2-3 mins in, falling a further few degrees behind in lead up to first crack. Hit first crack at 9:49 and 20 degrees below normal (maybe due to temp sensor moving when I recently fixed the popper after it blew the thermal fuse). Few snaps of second crack at 15:59, more active at 16:20 and pulled roast at 16:50. No oil on beans, CS10

For a first attempt to track a target temp with my new control system, Im pretty happy. Will see how it tastes in due course. Now I need to research and give some thought to profiles that might bring out different flavours.

Who me, Im going to put that on my phone, once I get the phone of course, although mister I want to design my own* ;D will put one into the software of the popper and Ill be able to have set profiles to use and we can download them back onto the computer.* My profiles are fairly consistent at present.

I just did a Limmu, roasted to approximately C9.* Ambient was 22 degrees.* 0-8 minutes* climbs to 187 degrees, 8-10 minutes climbs 200 degrees first crack happened between eight and a half and nine and a half, 10-13 minutes climbs 206 degrees and 13-14 and a half minutes reached 214 degrees second crack and I pulled it.

1kg of my all-time favourite blend, Monsoon Malabar & Sipangan Bolon. 50/50 blend roasted together, to just on the first snaps of second crack.

The body and richness of the malabar is a near perfect match with the sweet nuttiness of the sipangan bolon.

The smell is so good while its roasting, makes you just want to grab a spoonfull and eat it... :D

    pre blend roast

    328g costa rica san isidro
    169g harrar longberry
    150g monsoon malabar

    became 542 brown

pulled at around cs8, hard to tell as it was basically night and dark, when inside and bagging looked about that. temp wise was a fair way from 2nd crack based on historical figures.

    smelled all fruity and spicy

did a hard bean roast profile, in the past that has worked well for blueberry from the harrar and a toasty element from the monsoon malabar, and knock box said the costa was hard…anyway hope will be good

Have been a bit derelict with posting up roast batches recently... :(

Roasted a batch today though so better post up what Ive done ;)

350g - Peru Ceja de Selva Estate
    270g - Uganda Bugisu
    * 80g - India Madikeri Robusta

Separated into two equal batches and roasted on the Behmor at:
    1lb - P4 - D+90sec
Door cracked open at the start of Rolling 1st-Crack with 4:30min to go and left that way until 2nd-Crack snaps started with about 20sec to go until the Cool cycle started.

    16.4% Weight Loss.

Resulted in a beautifully even roast that has a wonderful aroma. Will be beaut in the cup in a few days time... 8-)

Re: Whats in my coffee roaster this week

Tonight I tested out a function of my popper that I hadnt before, never been game, so what do I do, try it out on my favourite bean the Kenya Kagongo Peaberry :)

The function is: cooling in the popper and yep it works, 3 minutes from 213 to 37 degrees, I was very happy, cool to the touch and packed it up.

The other bonus is that I got smell, a weird thing has been happening by roasting in the popper and using sieves to cool in front of the fan, I get hardly any to no smell coming from the beans.

So the breakdown of my Peaberry roasting is:

    0-8 183 degrees
8-10 192 degrees first crack happened at about 9 minutes
10-13 196 degrees (normally this hits 200 degrees but I bumped the dial so it stayed lower)
13-15 213 degrees second crack happened at 15 minutes
    15-16 70 degrees
    16-17 41 degrees
    17-18 37 degrees

Now we know that the software program my OH is writing will work, literally hit the program and walk away (well not literally), come back with beans ready to put in their containers :)

Roasted 2 lots of WOW Decaff with the Gene this arvo. Had measured the green beans into a bowl for batch 2. Went out to start the batch and a cheeky little mouse was having a feed of greens. 6 of his friends were close by. We have 1000s of the "little darlings" running everywhere. Roasted beans must be stashed away in a very mouse proof place. Such places are getting harder to find. Mice are taking over.

Re: Whats in my coffee roaster this week

Last Sunday on the KKTO I* roasted the last of my Kuza

    750 grams of Ethiopian Kuza

Normally I roast this bean well past second crack
But this lot was pulled short at barely at second crack

Today I roasted 2 kg of beans

These are green beans are from the Koffee Kosmo shop or Barazi and intended for use this Saturday on the Bezzera Strega HX Lever try out day at Barazi
    http://coffeesnobs.com.au/YaBB.pl?num=1163931729/6#6

1 kg of Colombian Supremo "Bachue"
1 kg of Nicaraguan SHG EP "Pola" Green

    These were roasted as
600 gr Light Roast of Colombian
600 gr Medium Roast of Nicaraguan
800 gr as a blend of the 2 at past second crack and bordering on a dark roast

    KK

Re: Whats in my coffee roaster this week

    So far this week

    250 of JBM
250 of Hawaii Kona Extra Fancy
400 of Yemen Bani Ismail (2x200g in the Baby Roaster)

Planning on 500 of PNG Wahgi Peaberry before the week is out and another batch of the Yemen in the Baby to keep me going until the JBM and Hawaii Kona are ready. I roasted these in my Hottop, with a slightly different profile to what I usually use, a more gradual rise in temp over a longer roast time to first crack, then drop just before second crack.

Im also planning on doing a comparison between different roasters this weekend using some PNG Wahgi AA in the Baby, Hottop, Behmor and Gene Cafe roasters. Hopefully Ill be able to get them to somewhere near the same roast point, CS 8 or there abouts. :D

    Behmor Coffee Roaster
yesterday roasted some blends with robusta in them as a friend wanted to try:

    one was

    half costa rica san isidro
    [ch8531] limmu
    1/6 robusta

    the other was

    half limmu
    [ch8531] robusta
    1/6 san isidro

guess ill hear the verdict in a couple of weeks!

i reckon the [ch8531] robusta will be a bit out there?
