Gosh it has been quiet in here no one roasting anymore ;)

Roasted the Finca earlier in the week, great bean loads of chaff.

Tonights Aussie MTE 549 taken out of the LOCKED cabinet just into SC. Should be ready for ACog to try if it lasts that long ::)

Roasting Beverage Dimple on Ice :)

Re: Whats in my coffee roaster this week

Just did a back to back roast this afternoon

    500 gr Ethiopian Harrar Longberry
    500 gr PNG Wahgi AA

The Harrar is the advance roast for a Hybrid Mocha Java blend as it needs quite a few days to rest and degas
Call me a mad scientist but
I will try to blend it with PNG Jiwaka Peaberry just to see what the outcome will be

    I roasted mine
    Start first crack 9 min
Rolling first crack 10 to 11 min
slowed it down a little and
Pulled 1 min after second crack at 15 min

This lot of beans I roasted have variable size as some beans are huge and should not be called Peaberry

    Three roasts this afternoon.
330g Papua New Guinea Wahgi AA to just before SC
330g Uganda Busamaga to first snaps of SC
300g Yemen Bani Ismail to start of SC.
Only one small stone in the Yemen (Id have been worried if I hadnt found at least one stone in the batch). Only enough Yemen left for one more roast.. *:(

Roasting up about 2kg in total for my wife and I to take overseas (fly out this arvo - will be away for 12 months!).

    Trying a blend of:
50% Peru Ceja de Selva (pulled on SC) - for sweetness/body
25% Mexico Tapachula el Tacaná (into rolling SC) - for cocoa notes
25% Ethiopia Sidamo Koratie (pulled 3-4C before SC) - for extreme fruitiness.

All intended for Aeropress (a farewell present from CSer Alistair! Cheers mate!!).

On paper, this is a great blend! Hopefully it lasts us until we find some quality coffee in Bulgaria!

    Cheers
    Stuart.

Re: Whats in my coffee roaster this week

    Blend:
    350g... PNG Wahgi
    200g... Bali Gunung Batur
    100g... Monsoon Malabar
    100g... Ethiopian Sidamo Guji

Taken up to Rolling First Crack(RFC) at 13:30 (using an exponential profile which is rolled over as FC starts up). Maintained a low gradient of 1.0-1.5C/Min until the end of RFC and then increased to 4.5-5.0C/Min and maintained until regular snaps of Second Crack(SC) were heard then heat was removed. Allowed SC to laze along for another 30 seconds then dumped and cooled.

Will stay in the bag for at least 7 days and will probably develop nicely after the bag is cracked open at that time. This is one of my mainstay blends with a good PNG bean and ditto Ethiopian. Looking forward to the first few brews ;)

    Began cupping this one yesterday....

Absolutely beautiful. Lots of flavour intensity & complexity, good body, clean crisp acidity and a balanced sweetness. The fruitiness of the Sidamo manages to poke through and all in all, one of my better efforts (even if I say so myself). Family and friends love it too and thats always pleasing... Roasted another batch today but substituted the Wahgi with the recent "Peru Ceja de Selva Estate" - Should also prove interesting ;)

    Cheers :)

Re: Whats in my coffee roaster this week

Got excited on the weekend and roasted the following:
    350g Peru Ceja de Selva
    350g Mocha Java Decaf
    350g Brazil Cafenzinho Bourbon
    350g Mexico Tapachula El Tacana

Probably slightly underroasted the Mexican - I got a wee bit excited and dumped at the first snips of SC, completely ignoring the fact that sources had said this bean produced great cocoa shots when roasted dark

Any way, Im still loving the Honduras Barrios at the moment and looking forward to getting stuck into these new batches next week :)

    Cheers,

Re: Whats in my coffee roaster this week

    This afternoon:-

500g of Sulawesi Rante Kapua Toraja (many thanks Beanflyin!)
500g of Kenya Gitwe A (many thanks Andy!)

First time on the Kenya - its a highly ugly little bean but, as promised, lots of heat early in the piece. *High producer of chaff compared to the Sulawesi, which produces not much at all. *Had to pick through a bit and toss some of the beans at the end due to their not roasting correctly and doesnt roast as evenly for me as the Sulawesi.

Smells really nice right from the start, though - cant wait to try it out in the cup!

All done in a wok on the BBQ, as per normal (one day will get the BBQ roaster finished...maybe! *Im not pushing it, though, because I enjoy low-tech wok roasting.)

    Cheers

ok roasting has got me totally hooked. I have to keep reminding myself that there is only so much coffee I can drink! Over the last weekend and up until last night I roasted -

225g Yirg - roast failed due to lack of attention from idiot driving the Gene
    225g Yirg - second attempt
225g Kenya Gitwe A - trying a lighter roast for filter
    225g Nicaragua Finca Dipilto
    225g Sumatran Mandehling Kuda Mas
225g Peru Ceja De Selva - only lasted about 2 days when I realised Id actually run out of coffees ready to drink, so ...
225g Peru again, to rest for a bit longer this time

    cant.stop.roasting. *:D :D :D

My biggest roast morning yet. Visitors coming next weekend purely on the basis of a certain reputation for good coffee (if lucky, they might be offered lunch) ::).

    PNG Wahgi 330g
Nicaraguan Finca Dipilto (to blend with Wahgi 50/50) 440g
    Decaf Wow 400g
    Brazil Original Bourbon 1kg
    Yirgacheffe 400g

    Added to existing:
    Ethiopian Gambella Sundried 400g
    Sumatra Blue Lintong 400g

My kitchen bench looks like a store. Red metallic valve bags everywhere.

went a bit mental again this weekend, but wanted to try a new blend and have enough to share with some colleagues at work.

2 x 225g of Yirg - Finally feel like Im getting this right, but first roast took a bit long so I did another batch with an overall hotter profile to get the time down.

Multiple batches of Brazil Bourbon, Peru Ceja de Selva and Kenya Gitwe A for an attempt at blending.

Still getting the measure of the temp profile and performance of the KKTO..

Here are a couple of shots of the outcome... * Pulled as entered rolling SC, but have yet to get a cooling system fully working the way I want.

I dont know whats better, the roast....or the stylish composition of retro mug and flower!

    :)

For me, it was a Hawaiian Kona (JBM Cultivar) to the first snaps of 2nd *which never fails to impress. *It was followed by a Cameroon Arabica to the start of rolling 2nd. *I was given a sample to test roast and if the grading, processing and fruity post-roast aromas are anything to go by, it should be good!

Last week was Ethiopian Yirg and tomorrow i think it will be
    Mexican
    Australian

Not exactly sure of the fully bean variety as i have got these from my local roaster who only has about 20kg or so left and doesnt stock them as a standard bean that he roasts. I may go back and get all the ethiopian yirg he has because again this isnt a standard for him.

    Hi SD

    Snap!

    Interesting bean...

Roast 1 the thermocouple bead fell out of the Corretto so I ended up a fair way into RSC - was really good.

Roast 2 pulled earlier and not so good.

Roast 3 went further and it was back to really good.

Just seems like it needs to get into RSC to maximise its potential.

Then I found it very finicky on extraction - but that is OT ;D

Think you are on the right path

A 750g batch there KK and from the data it looks like a nicely controlled roast. Your KKTO roaster looks more interesting and capable every day... 8-)

    Its only a popper, but...
300gm of Yirgacheffe, and 500gm of Monsoon Malabar.

I really struggled to roast the monsoon mal in the popper. It roasted much quicker than the Yirg, and there appeared to be little, if any gap between first and 2nd crack. Even if I lifted them out at the first sign of 2nd crack quite a few beans appeared to have divots out of them. Is this usual?
Also seeing as the monsoon mal are a much lighter (weight) bean than others - would you roast them in a popper by weight still, or just by equal volume ?

Re: Whats in my coffee roaster this week

    Gday linnaen.... :)

Sounds like you need to try and tame the popper down a bit there mate; maybe roast smaller batches of the MM to try and stretch the roast times out a bit. Or, look towards building a Corretto or one of KKs excellent Turbo Oven roasters... Both of these will afford greater levels of control and allow you to profile the roast the way you want.

Usually, I roast MM so that Rolling First Crack(FC) happens at around the 12-13 minutes mark and then pull just before the onset of Second Crack(SC) at under 20 minutes and then immediately cool. Never have any divots or burnt edges (tipping). Have found (for my palate) that resting for 10+ days really brings out all the flavours of the bean and when added to a blend really generates great, goopy(technical term) long lasting crema.

Hope some of this is helpful mate... ;)

Re: Whats in my coffee roaster this week

    Thanks Mal,
I think the ambient temperature here doesnt help. When its 25 degrees C or plus most of time time you are at a disadvantage in slowing roasting beans in a popper even if you are pointing a fan directly at it. Ive got a couple of poppers now, and am in the process of taking one apart to see how much more airflow I can achieve.

A Coretto is on the cards, I have a BM sitting at home doing nothing, but have been trying to source another just in case I decide to try and make bread again before heading that route.
KKs toaster oven does look to be a very nice but a little too complicated to manufacture knowing how incredibly large my toolkit is (a leatherman skeletool) and my diy skills for that type of thing (negligible).
