Re: Whats in my coffee roaster this week

Just cause I just finished a roasting session a bit ago here ya go. :)

Roasted tonight as single origins were:
    • Costa Rican Tarrazu
    • Colombian Excelso Organic water process Decaf
    • Nicaraguan Angelina Estate
    • Hawaiian Koa Coffee Plantation Kona
    • Hawaiian Koa Coffee Plantation Ka`u Gold
    • Puerto Rican Mi Cafe Grano de Altura Yauco Seleccion Catador
    • Puerto Rican Cibales Yauco
    • Guatemalan Antigua San Sebastian
    • Guatemalan Antigua Puerta Verde

I also did a pre-roast blend using the odd left over amounts of the last 6 varietals listed above filling the batch out with the Angelina Estate.

Our roasting spreadsheet calculates our average coffee consumption and predicts how many days our current roasted stocks will last. Like KK, we aim to have at least 7 days supply (preferably 10) at any one time, theoretically meaning that our avg. age of consumption is ~7-10 days. Good in theory... too often we dont roast often enough and then end up selling our last "mature" 250g to one of our mates!

At the moment, the spreadsheet is telling me weve got 22 days worth in the cupboard (thats 5.3 kg roasted :P)! Corretto has been quite busy lately...

And, just to keep this on topic, in the last 3 days weve roasted:
    Sulawesi Bukit Sapan-Maninga
    Kenya Rititi AA
    India Madikeri A
    Ethiopia Sidamo Koratie
    Ethiopia Harar Longberry
Yemen Bani Ismail (swapped some with CSer Alistair at our BeanBay pickup!)

Really looking forward to tasting some of those new ones from the last Bean Bay!
    Cheers

If you have some of the India Madikeri try that too... similar style but far, far better than this Tiger crop.

Re: Whats in my coffee roaster this week

    Rather a large roasting weekend.
Just returned from a week away and 2 of my clients were also in need of some beans.
    • PNG Wahgi - first time through for me, so looking forward to trying it soon.
    • Indian Mysore Nuggets
    • Peru Grace Estate
    • Honduras La Central

Have had the Indian and Peru many times before, but the Honduran only once before. Plan on leaving the Honduras for at least 8 days as it seemed to get better with time last roast.

    Ahhhh.. the choices we have!

Makes me very happy to hear you say that, Andy! We LOVED the last Tiger Mtn offering (never tried it before that) and bought the Madikeri hoping it was similar. Stoked to hear that you think its superior! Even more stoked that we bought 10kg!!

250gm PNG Wahgi to CS9 and blended with 100gm Indian Monsoon Malabar (to stretch it out!) also CS9.

Both seemed to roast faster today for some reason.

Easy to drink, IMM gives it the extra crema and taste ...

Trying a quick(er) roast of 400g of the PNG Wahgi today. FC @ 8mins pulled before SC @ 12mins (~220oC on the thermocouple). *I usually try stretching out the roast a bit longer 10-12min FC and 15-18 SC, but have been drinking more french press at work and am looking to get a "brighter" cup. (The joys of being able to tinker with a roast)

Only a small roast this week as Im still finishing off some Monsooned Malabar and the last of my Peru Segunda Naturals (ugly, mongrel of a bean that somehow tastes OK).

A name! I hadnt thought about a name yet Mal...

I suspect you are right that its a feminine roaster- for after roast #1 on Sunday night, the heels were dug in and it refused to proceed.

Punchline was an unusual thermocouple wiring setup which was sending shutdown signals to the pilot *:D....All solved though and working beautifully...

Hannah I like....Hazel would just intmidate me...Way too high expectations for absolute perfection EVERY time ;)

Perhaps out of respect, we should call it "Hawker" ??

    Any other suggestions?

Re: Whats in my coffee roaster this week

After a 4 hour stint on Dudley Im still buzzing. *Amongst a number of other roasts, 2.5kg of Bolivian Cup of Excellence did their stuff in the drum.

Ill admit I was nervous and will remain so until I try the results. *At first I thought they were going to roast unevenly, as some almost went white at 135 degrees. *Considerable chaf and then a transformation. *All the beans took on the same colour, and I dumped the beans at the first signs of 2nd crack. *Every single bean looks perfect to my eye, and I never imagined this to be possible.

Thanks for making these available Andy. *I hope Ive managed to get this roast right and that we can all enjoy them together at our re-opening.

    :)

Re: Whats in my coffee roaster this week

    24/4 600g PNG WAHGI
    30/4 600g Ethiopian Harrar Longberry
30/4 600g Honduras La Central SHG

The Wahgi I pulled well before SC and it was nice in the plunger but has a very sour smell and the intense flavours in espresso didnt work as well as when pulled just shy or on SC.

Im planning to post roast blend the Honduras with the Harrar...a couple more days and Ill post a cupping note.
