Where to get a good coffee in Sydney?

    Cafelat Coffee Tamper and Accessories
    Hi all,
Im off to Sydney at the end of this week, and as im from Melbourne i would like some
recomendations from you Sydneysiders as to where i might get a good coffee. Im
staying on the south side near Tom Ugleys bridge, but that wont stop me driving around.
I guess its a good time to show off what you have up there. Come on, share your secrets!

Southside - my neck of the woods! Try Kafeneo in Cronulla Mall, good sweet and gutsy espressos and nice milk drinks (if thats your thing). Hes the guy behind the machine with a "NO SKIM" hat on ;D There are others in cronulla with decent coffee - grind underneath the Rydges hotel (but hes only open on weekends. Cronulla used to have one of the best Ive ever tasted - "Buzz" but sadly that lovely place is no more.

There is a place outside David jones in the miranda westfield with a Synesso and good coffee (I think its called Piccollo), so if you have to enter the evil shopping mega mall you can get a good shot.

Outside "the shire" the one that I love is Single Origin, near central station.

Have a read of that thread. Then if you check out the news forum where I think Luca posted his cafe experiences in Sydney recently, you should be able to find some great places to go to there.

And it sounds like our newest site sponser is the go too, Di Bartoli, that is. Id be giving them a go.

My pick is Short Black in Penshurst, but you have to go across Tom Uglys to get there! ;)

When youve done it all and got back home, you should join in on the Fave Cafe thread and put down your experiences there, wed love to hear them! :D

Is that the one that has the sign on the machine bragging about having the best machine in the shire? I found them to be very ordinary.
My SO ordered me an doppio espresso, with the PBTM saying, its good to see someone drinking espresso for a change." It was very watery with a weak crema.
My opinion only of course *;).

Ill second the vote for Kafenio, they are excellent. And I second the vote to check out Lucas post as it hits off a heap of the other good places to go. Gee im a follower arent I :)

Scoota, I have to admit Ive never checked out Short Black at Penshurst. I go past there (King Georges Rd) frequently and would never have picked that thered be a great coffee place there. Its not very far at all over Tom Uglys Bridge, so Dennisl you should check it out and report back - Ill try to make the detour one day this week and try it out too

Give them a go, poundy. Theyre doing pretty good food as well and are making a decent cup out of a Schibello roast.

Good memory, SG. Nice to think that people read some of my insane rants. The post is here. I went on about the Aroma festival and the ICTF in that thread; scroll down to my third post for the cafes. Not sure how many of them are going to be super convenient for you to get to; it was all kinda CBD-centric. If you only go to one cafe in that area, make it single origin. Theyre not necessarily the best, but their coffee is certainly very different and very good. And when in rome, its worthwhile ordering a "piccolo."

    Hope that helps,

    Luca

Thanks all, great help. I will get to some and try out their liquid gold,
and report back in a couple of weeks. However, being a novice and not
really knowing too much about the intricacys im not sure that my
recommendations will be anything to go by! The question is where the hell do you get a good shot on the Hume Highway on the way up ?

Ooh! Youre planning on riding up to Sydney, Dennis? That should be fun but if you are going to do that, why are you going via the Hume Hwy!? You should be going via the Princess Hwy. Way more fun and a much nicer ride. 8-)

And 8 hours in my V8 Chevy is a no brainer to Melbourne from Sydney! :D ;)

Go to Campos, Missenden Road Camperdown. (the coffees got better again). Must

yep Single Origin, Surry Hills. Must

I am... ahmm not a fan of Tobys but you should at least check them out... in Wooloomolloo and Chippendale. Maybe

If in the city go to the Citibank Building 2Park Street Cafe, it is the one in the tower tucked into the corner on the right as you walk in the revolving doors. Havent been there in a while but they were very very good.

There one in the Strand Arcade (between george and pitt street), ground floor I forgot the name... but its in the middle, and its the only place that makes good coffee out of them.

If I think of some more Ill edit them here.

Just got back from trying lunch at Short Black.

    The food is excellent.

I had a Frappe for starters and that was quite nice.
I did get confused though when I asked for the difference between the "Frappe" and the "Greek" - both "iced coffees".
The waitress explain the Frappe was made the Greek way, ice and coffee, whereas the "Greek" was made with icecream. *[smiley=undecided.gif]

After my meal I ordered a flat white.
It was delivered by the owner/barista complete with latte art on top.

When paying for our meals I asked about the coffee equipment.
He didnt know what brand it was.
Told me it was supplied by the coffee supplier.

I checked out the Schibello website and they supply their own branded machines.
This one would have been a 3 group judging from the width.

The grinder was a Macap - looked just like mine except for the ginormous hopper.
He also wasnt aware of the grinder brand.

When I told him it was almost identical to mine he asked where my "place" was.
He was a little surprised when I explained that I had this type of grinder and a single group machine at home.

Anyway, I told him the food was good and Id be back.
    He was happy.

The only thing I couldnt bring myself to tell him was that the coffee was too hot for my liking when delivered.
My palate is not yet very discerning so just accept that the coffee was not bad to my taste, the milk foaming looked good and I said before the food was excellent.

Yeah, I noticed that about the machine too, TG. There was no discernible mark on it to tell you what it was. Anyway, I thought that they were doing a credible job with it.

How confusing was that "iced coffee" you had! Youve even confused me now. I thought a Frappe was done with ice and ice cream, with either a "Frappe mix" (which is basically powdered milk and sugar) or real milk?? :o Hmm, each to their own I suppose! And was it served with cream on the top?

They sell the BFC Junior and the commercial machines have a BFC look to them. I gather that BFC will slap together whatever machine roasters want, provided that they order enough of them, so it might be brilliant or it might be crap. I like the custom BFC machines that Veneziano has.

    Cheers,

When I first ran across them, it was in Greece, and they were just coffee with water and ice (sugar to taste).

This one didnt have cream on top.

Re: Where to get a good coffee in Sydney?

I visited Coffee Philosophy (Mocopan) in the Strand Arcade today with my partner- yes its the one people have been calling by various names and yes, it has the stairs in the back of the shop! About 2/3rds down on the right as you go from George St to Pitt St.
Good to watch the young barista- my partner with her background in foodie stuff picked up a few hints for us, including rolling the espresso around in the bottom of the cup prior to dusting with chocolate then pouring the milk. He had an interesting technique to filling the filter as well. I tend to do what Ive seen so many others do when grinding on demand- fill, couple of knocks on bench, refill and knock, level off and tamp. He tended to fill a bit knock once, a bit more, knock until hed done it about 4 or 5 times.
Beautifully presented, strong and rich cappucinos with good even after taste- very balanced- probably the first time Ive had the art and quality in the cup match. The blend was a lot fuller and smoother than Campos. Just my bias perhaps.

Re: Where to get a good coffee in Sydney?

I believe another coffee shop needs to be added to this growing list. The Sea Bar at Dee Why, Scott Callaghan is working there (2006 World Latte Art Champion). I went there yesterday and again today both times Scott made all the coffees. As you would expect from a competition barista was exceptional each time. I think they only have the one blend and I liked it was quite smooth. I am only a novice so wont attempt to describe the flavour. Is the blend Scott used for his title. So if you ever go to Dee Why would be worth a try I reckon. I havent made it to too many quality shops in Sydney yet so dont know how it compares in that sense. But looks like there are heaps of options from this thread. Good to see there is a growing industry in Sydney.

They are Hazchem but I am quite sure that Scott doesnt work on Sunday there. I heard that from a friend of mine from college who is good mates with him. So may not be the same when Scott is not there. To tell you the truth both times I was there nobody else made any drinks so not sure of the standard overall. It was reasonably quiet both days so they didnt have a lot of staff working but I am sure as that strip gets busier on the weekend there would also be more people working. In the unlikely event that Scott is not making coffee but is there you should definately ask for him to make it. Be interested to know what you, and others, think of the coffee there.

Re: Where to get a good coffee in Sydney?

I had a bit of time up my sleeve today so took a cruise over to Dee Why for lunch at Sea Bar. I agree with coffeechaser, add Sea Bar to the list of places in Sydney worth going to. I had a chat to Scott while I was there and he tells me that he will be making all the coffee served there, he would rather be there all the time making them himself and being sure of the quality than leaving it in someone elses hands.

They are using the Pony blend developed by Morgans Coffee and as their clientele expands, Scott intends to showcase different blends and Single Origins on a weekly basis. I had a ristretto and cappuccino while i was there and enjoyed both coffees very much. Scott is (obviously) passionate about his coffee and is also very friendly and chatty. Ill be going back!

Oh, they have food and that was good also.

Yeah Scott is a great guy indeed. I am sure he will be a massive draw card and their client list will grow as a result. I was sitting in there yesterday and looking at people having coffee on the cafes either side thinking, you really have no idea what you are missing out on as they were drinking their stale beans. But all the more room for true Coffee Snobs. Glad I didnt lead you up the garden path Hazchem.

Re: Where to get a good coffee in Sydney?

An update on the Sea Bar. Scott has now introduced a regular "special reserve" for $1 extra. He had a SO (Guatamelan) when I was there today. Is starting to introduce more stuff aimed at coffee snobs and is starting to attract a few already. When I was there today three girls gave him the suggestion that he should enter a barista competition. Which was obviously quite a funny suggestion for a person who has claimed the world latte art title. But then again I suppose there is still the world barista championship as a challenge. He really is a great guy to boot so is worth a chat on all things coffee. They sell some freshly roasted Morgans beans as well. I picked up 250g of "The Pony" on the 26th and it had been roasted in the 25th so they keep refreshing the stock. The Guatamelan and a Peaberry were also on sale.

Apparently theres a new south-side cafe opened up - in Oatley. Apparently the barista there knows his stuff. All unconfirmed discussion from a friend who isnt a Csnob. Will be looking into it when I go to make the next coffee drop-off to the friend.

Anyone been there or know anything about it?

    Which side of Oatley, guys?

My folks live there (and I used to years ago as well! :P ) still. If its in the so called new Coles center then I can guarantee that a lot of west Oatley people will be boycotting that.

If its in Oatley itself, Ive tried the one that is up the top of the street but didnt think that that barista really knew his stuff, unless theyve changed baristas! ::) They were serving Schibello coffee which was okay. Short Black in Penshurst is a better bet IMO.

My mother is a coffeesnob (but computer challenged!), so Ill grill her again for the best coffee in the district, however it was her who recommended Short Black to us initially.

I finally made it to Mecca and Single Origin today. I had to go to the city to catch up with someone so I used the opportunity to do a mini cafe crawl. Preferred Mecca out of the 2 of them. Both were good coffees but Mecca was just that little bit better for my mind. I had three coffees from Mecca in the end and they were consistent on all occassions.
The Sea Bar is still my favouite cafe in Sydney, so far.....

Re: Where to get a good coffee in Sydney?

Oops!? I wouldve thought youd love to have 2mcm dropping round TG! I know I would! ;)

One problem that I have when visiting Sydney is that I keep hearing about all these places I would like to visit and then never get to because I cant get on to here to find out the address of the cafe! (well, I do take my laptop where ever I go but there are limitations!)

I see that theres been a guide published so I grabbed a copy of it and I am hoping that the next time I am down there I will take this little book with me and go on a cafe crawl! Its small enough to fit in my underseat storage on the scooter too!

If you want a copy, I know that you can get them from coffeeparts.com and there might be another sponsor wholl put their hand up and say they are selling it too.

Theres bound to be a bunch of you who have seen this already and I dont know what your thoughts on it are but what Ive read so far seems quite helpful. I believe its only meant to be a guide to various cafes but they have gone into some good detail, even giving a paragraph on the coffee that they tried at each one.

    Re: Question for Sydney Snobs

Is Macchiato still open on Pitt St? *Been a while since I lived in Sydney, but this was my pick way back. Might be a bit far from Kent St though.

Go to Mecca for sure. I was there the other day and was superb. They are basically the corner of King and York street. Only other decent coffee shop I have been in the CBD so far is Single Origin but that is over near central station. There is a thread on Sydney spots as well.
I havent been to Elixir yet but I am sure it must be worth it if 2mcm gave it the thumbs up.

Im yet to find a decent coffee in The Rocks/Millers Point/Circular Quay area (I work there). The cafes are very hit and miss. So, if anyone has good suggestions I would be very interested too.

I have to travel to Sydney next month - a flying visit for a negotiation I am involved in. Ill be staying on Kent Street near the Harbour - is there good coffee anywhere in the vicinity? Id possibly even walk as far as Martin Place if I need to!
Let me know when youre in town and if I havent found a job by then Ill meet you for a coffee when you decide where to try one.

What about the French patisserie in The Rocks? I cant think of the street. *I dont have a Sydney street directory here at work so I cant check.

The place with the sour French owner. *Or is it a bit hit and miss? *I havent been there for quite a while.

Edit: I just looked up the Yellow Pages - it might be La Renaissance Cafe Patisserie in Argyle, just around the corner from George St.

Must visits are Elixir (Strand Arcade) and also Mecca... ;)
Is Elixir any good any more? When it was Luxe, it was awesome, but I gather that there have been some staff migrations ... including some of the more talented going to Mecca ... When I dropped by Elixir a few months ago it was quite ordinary. But maybe they have gotten their acts together ...

    Cheers,

    Luca
