Thread: After hours coffee in Canberra

Tilleys at Lyneham (shuts 10pm) is normally quite decent (not super special), as is The Front nextdoor (but they might switch the Espresso machine off in the evening). Tilleys staff are good....Im not a huge fan of the Segafredo beans. A few years back I would have suggested Cafe Essen in Garema Place, but its random quality now.

Tilleys is out due to some poor service in the past, and the Front doesnt really suit me as its too small.
Anywhere at Garema Place is also out due to parking issues for a group.

Yeh.... I wouldnt take a group to the Front. It used to be the bakers shop and how they fitted that place in there buggers me. There are a couple of places in Dickson that make nice coffee (in the lane near Zefferellis)...but i dont think theyre open after hours. The place that used to be called Spill the Beans and now has a simple blackboard and chalk frontage made a very nice flat white a couple of weeks ago....but no idea when they shut.

I'll be spending a week at the Linux conference linux.conf.au which is at the ANU. Any recent suggestions for close places for good espresso?

Two Before Ten is a 5 minute walk from the Eastern (city) side of campus, and is well worth it (seriously good, but busy). Harvest is nearby and is usually quite ok too. If you are stuck up against Black Mountain, the Purple Pickle is the best of the on-campus places that I've tried previously. Apparently Lonsdale St Roasters have an outlet in the ANU Food Co-op, but it is not regularly staffed by people from Lonsdale St....haven't tried it.

Not personally, but Ms O'Speedwagon has and reckons it's really good. She drinks skinny lattes exclusively, but she knows a bad coffee when she has one. Depending on where Speleomike is staying (though that's a very pricey area for accom.)

Have just looked up the websites for these. Two Before Ten and Harvest are at 40 Marcus Clarke, not too far away. Purple Pickle and Lonsdale St Roasters are a bit further. Linux talks (and much more besides) are at the Manning Clarke lecture theatre but I'm staying at the Jon XXIII college which is on the Western side of the ANU. However a good walk for a good espresso and cake is nice. I have also found Koko Black which has nice chocolates. Going to print out a nice Google map with all the locations.

OK. You'll find that there is a cafe right next to the Manning Clarke centre...called 'Degree Cafe'. Under new management, used to serve Vittoria, and was ordinary. May have improved but I wouldn't wager on it. Good thing it is out of semester....the usual inhabitants of John XXIII College are on a par with their idiot mates at U Syd. Two Before ten is sort of half inside the arcade at 40 Marcus Clarke. I'd go there before Harvest. Interested to hear what you think.

Yes "Degree Cafe" is just outside the Manning Clarke centre where our talks were but it looked more like a bar than a coffee place so didn't bother trying it. My wife and I though did try "Two Before Ten" and "Harvest". At both places I ordered a double ristretto and Jill ordered a flat white.

Harvest has a better range of cakes and nibbles to have with coffee. Two Before Ten has just a few cakes near the cash register which were obscured by people paying. When I was standing back from the counter working out what they had to eat I could not see any nibbles at all and was considering going back to Harvest. Once at the register I could see they had a dozen small cakes.

As for the coffee, Jill says that Two Before Ten had a more biscuit aroma both were excellent. The ristretto was nice and smooth with good thick, lasting crema, quite different flavours from both. Service in both was excellent and served with a smile. We would rate both equally with a high score.

Thanks all for the tips on where to go. Made two lunchtimes more enjoyable for us.
