Re: What do Coffee Snobs do for a crust

Hospitality is a huge industry. I reckon a lot of people in the hospitality industry would do something different in their spare time than deal with coffee.

Im happy to roast coffe, a leg of lamb, do a nice consomme, julienne some vegetables, and top it off with a beautiful green tea panna cotta.

Physics/(insert engineering field here) double? thats a bit of overkill isnt it? A BSc in Atmospheric Science got me into the kitchen, Id hate to see where your degree will put you (besides in debt) :P

Re: What do Coffee Snobs do for a crust

I love my coffee, so Im just as happy to make it when Im at home as I am when im at work. My housemates love it to!

Well I was really looking into doing aero design, possible aerospace (as opposed to aeronautical), so the physics would help out there.

    Hey all,

This looked like a good place to jump in with a first post.

I am an Accountant. Most of my work consists of auditing local governmental units (cities, villages, school districts, etc.) The rest of the time I spend working on state and federal tax issues.

Welcome aboard and congratulations on your first post, Mike. Sounds like a good cup of coffee would be a welcome relief from all that government work. Hope the figures -- our taxes -- add up!

    Hey all,

    * * I have to say people on here really do come from all walks, really interesting. As for myself, i am not as interesting....i was a uni student up until June when I finished my degree in History/ Political Science ...my major area was Middle Eastern studies and Anti-Terrorism. Now i work a little in the Wine industry...my other great love along with coffee...I guess the love of coffee truly is universal. i read an interesting fact the other day...that Coffee is the worlds second largest traded commodity on the world stock markets (the biggest being Oil).

OK, well, Im an "operations manager" in a small Antwerp-based shipping company, running time-charter ships world-wide. That means lots of Chinese ports, Africa, South and North America and, yes, Port Kembla, Port Lincoln, Adelaide, Newcastle, Dampier and ... big BHP and, yes, we do try to stay clear of the reef...
Hobbies? Jogging (less each year), wine (doing lectures -tastings- on an amateur level), and learning and reading Spanish. Writing on some forums, coffee, wine, Spanish and (alas, more previously than now), Porsche cars (of which there are plenty amateurs in Ozzy!)

Re: What do Coffee Snobs do for a crust

Time to update my details in this thread! Ive landed a new job - working as a full time barista! Now my passion for coffee is what I do to earn a crust as well. Im working at a local Michels Patisserie. The coffee there isnt great at the moment, and my boss realises this - which is why he has hired me! Hopefully I can evolve it into a place where even a coffeesnob can come and have a coffee that they can enjoy!

Thanks for the encouragement matt! Im determined to change the quality of the espresso thats currently on offer at work (and indeed within my town of Toowoomba, QLD). Its a sad fact that even the 10 sec gushers that are currently being sold at work are one of the best cups of coffees that can be had in Toowoomba. At least they use a tamp! Cant wait to be producing drinks that I am totally proud of, and that change people perceptions of good coffee!

Researcher into toxic microscopic marine algae... the ones that make shellfish so toxic you die if you eat some.

Try sitting in front of a microscope for a few hours after lunch without a good coffee with lunch! :)

I have spent the past few years exploring in Sumatra and Borneo for new plants suitable for propagation and introduction to the mass market. My web site is here www.sumatraflora.com

Its been a lot of fun, and very rewarding, I have discovered a new species of carnivorous plant and an Amorphophalus (the big stinky corpse flower that makes the news whenever it blooms) and many plants that were considered rare and endangered are now a lot more common in cultivation.

Sadly, things here in Indonesia arent good at the moment and I am going to move back to Australia soon.

    Cheers, Troy.

Only just found this thread otherwise I would have done it first.

Im a General Manager with a very large food company with no coffee connections at all, though I am open to large industry discounts. Via Venezia/ Solis combo is retiring to my office in the nether reaches of Melbourne when my upgrade (thanks mattyj and Chris at TalkCoffee) is finalised in the next couple of weeks in time for my wifes birthday.

Wow, what a diverse group of people!

Im a stay@home wife and mum and its fantastic! My husband is a mad chemist masquerading as a science teacher (who has just decideed we need to invest in a Giotto- WOO HOO!), and we have a 7 month old daughter. Shes the reason I drink a lot of decaf :D

I was three-quarters of the way through a Primary Teaching degree but have put that on hold indefinately.

My husbands (very large) family are Papua New Guinean and Im yet to discover if they have any coffee contacts or connections... ;)

Mechanical Engineer for a company making analytical instruments. Used to design Mass Spectrometers, now working on an HPLC project...

spare time is largely dedicated to car stuff (Im current President of the Mazda MX-5 Club of Victoria), but financial restrictions mean I havent done any motorsport for over a year :( Love going to the track!

HPLC eh? I thought I had escaped analytical chemistry at the end of first year!

Im a student at university. Undergoing a humble BSc at the moment but I am entertaining the thought of branching out and doing postgrad medicine. Unfortunately its fairly prohibitive cost-wise: student debts would be roughly the equivalent of Ghanas GDP.

Gday people, im new to this board...

I work at a large elctrical retailer, managing the AV/Camera dept.
There is quite a diverse range of people here, which no doubt is great for a wide knowledge base and expertise.

As for the Beauraucracy, my fiance (non-coffee drinker) is totally undertanding the cyclone of org change! If it doesnt work, change it, if it does work, change it to make it work better ...

My equip: humble yet functional Elektra Nivola and Gaggia MDF grinder.

    Cheers;

    Tim

Yes there do appear to be a lot of IT and engineering geeks about :) Me too, Im afraid!

In a previous incarnation I was a mad scientist at CSIRO for way too long.
These days I own a small IT company and we specialise in professional IT systems support for small/medium companies. Working out of home several days a week usually, so the Carimali gets a fair bit of use.

    I hold down several jobs.

I work two days a week in the office for a local Aircraft Engineer, where I do the stock control and invoicing etc.

During the summer months, you can usually find me walking the side of the pool as the local swimming Coach (fully accredited at that too!)

And three days a week youll find me making coffee in the local bakery/cafe. (yet to be fully accredited)

Occasionally, I will give a horse riding lesson too, if someone asks. ;)

What about all those Manuka eateries? Whats the offering like there? I was there recently but as usual was reluctant to try coffees, but was overwhelemd by the choice of restaurants. However, it didnt take long to convince me that some of the worst coffee was at one of the Parliament House cafes. Very dull stuff.
