Other sponsors have left in the past - so moved on from being a sponsor to a regular member. Looks like that's what's happened here.

When that happens they come off the sponsors list and their profile reverts back to their member profile. All historical posts then have the member profile.

Sometimes they say something about their decision to move on from being a sponsor. Sometimes not and quietly exit.

I believe Andy requires all sponsors to wear a certain type of hat as part of the deal. Pauly has most likely eaten more hats than his sponsorship fees cover

Sponsors have some rules, nothing to onerous but we all need some rules or the place would be feral and not the trusted community we want.

I wasn't going to comment and I'm not going to go into specifics but seeing as the thread is already here, yes, he is no longer a site sponsor.

Fair 'nuff. I suspect the 'balance' of the site might return to something much more like the past (no disrespect to anyone involved).

Good point Andy. I stopped coming here over the past couple of months after I got the feeling that this site was not about advice and more about sales. Tough to get the right balance but I felt the site used to have it. Hopefully we are back there

It's a shame we lost a knowledgeable and helpful sponsor of many years standing in the process.

Not sure if we are talking about the same sponsor but I'd hardly say knowledgeable. Remember when he was hawking the Exobar Minore as the category killer? Not trying to start a flame war but Iets not rewrite history

No it's the same one. Pauly whose posts would promote whatever he had excess stock of.

    G'day nickm

I feel you are confusing the issues a little here.

FWIW, I always felt Talk Coffee (aka TC) was, at the very least, smack on the "self promotional line" constantly and wrong side of it on far too many occasions.

As for KB Paul, IMO he took some effort to provide a lot helpful assistance and advise. On the occasions when there could have been commercial considerations he took pains to point it out and either provided alternatives or suggested it was his personal opinion only and to seek other advice. FWIW, I suspect he actually got flamed for that a few times - "getting shot" for disclosing potential conflicts of interest seems harsh. I have not seen a thread from someone else where he pushed excess stock - however I do not read every thread.

Quite a lot of difference between them in my view.

Sometimes both of them announced a "clearance sale" in a specific thread. Fair enough they are sponsors and they deserve to get some advertising on the site.

Just because other CS'r's disagree with them (or anyone else on the site for that matter) merely means they have their own views. I joked on one thread that if you wanted 10 opinions just put 5 CS'r's in a room. That, to me at least, is healthy debate.

BTW. I have also been personally accused on AltCoffee (long defunct) and CS a number of time of pushing a commercial barrow. I have NEVER had any commercial links to any coffee industry sales / distribution people. Apart from setting up troublesome gear for friend's cafes since 1975 and sorting out the myths from the legends I stay well away from that whole scene. Why? The coffee industry in the West* became very "up itself / clichy" in the late '80's and I had enough of that in my "true profession" without letting it spill over into one of my passions.

I wish all the best for KB Paul and feel his absence on the site is a loss for the site. Even TC contributed quite a lot of good things despite his boundary issues - it is often a difficult line to walk (I know that only too well in my own career).

@Tampit the difference between the two was that TC had the right balance. He'd often recommend products that were not his own. TC seemed to be more knowledgeable about how the machines worked and about the industry in general.

I'm sure Paul is a nice guy but he went too hard too often which drove I'm assuming users off this site.

It's interesting to see how the same posts were perceived by different people. I have only been here about five minutes but I miss the sage advice of Chris from TC and thought the balance was ok. I think we all expect the sponsors to have some return from their time and investment here and we all use some filtering on their comments, we just want to be able to use a light filter, not a heavy one.

In many ways the issues I saw between TC and KBC seemed like the wise old bull and the enthusiastic young one sharing the same paddock, they had different ways, styles and knowledge.

One thing which hasn't been mentioned is that many, myself included, use this site to gain knowledge about coffee. Often sponsors are looked on as having some expertise, it is fair to be called to account (or explain the reasoning) if offering advice outside industry standards. One of the previous named ex sponsors still has incorrect information on their website, even after being corrected here. The interchange of opinions here is what enables the newcomers like myself work our own processes and systems out, nice that the membership scrutinises those opinions.

    There's a blast from the fantastic past. Alt.Coffee - a leader in it's time.
Most of the super enthusiasts made their way over to HomeBarista, via CoffeeGeek to continue the home coffee science movement.

I was reluctant to post about my experience with KBC as I thought i'd be shut down by Admin. I am still partial about publicizing it as Paul kind-of made an attempt to resolve, although, in the end the main issue was never acknowledged.

Long story short, I purchased a Grinder he recommended to me which was falsely advertised on his website. After receiving the incorrect item, the website specifications were changed to match the incorrect item I received (to cover his mistake). He then put the blame back on me suggesting I should have read the website properly in the first place.

An very dishonest and disheartening first experience with a Sponsor on this site .

Crikey, does that make us the cows? Would those expecting service from Chris or Paul be given more than they counted on ?
Anyway, the matter has been dealt with and I don't see any benefit in raking over the coals.

Guys some of this thread is sliding a bit too close to defamation of an ongoing business entity. You may want to consider more carefully turning this thread into a public airing of past suspicions and grievances.

That's putting it pretty mildly tbh! On many forums, naming and shaming is banned as it potentially exposes the site to legal risk. Either way it's poor form to accept a resolution then bad-mouth someone's brand, particularly with unsubstantiated accusations of dishonesty.

Hopefully the collective schadenfreude will wear off soon and we can get back to talking about coffee.

    okay all.
24 hours of opinions (noise?) in this thread so time to lock it up and let it slide many pages down.

Plenty of coffee discussions in other threads, go find one and have a chat about better stuff
