Buying a roaster, advice on thermometers

    Hi All,

The family are putting in to get me a roaster for my birthday, have settled on the Quest M3s electric drum roaster.

There's an option to include a K type thermocouple with the order, the machine comes with only 1 analogue thermometer for bean temp.
I'll be using some kind of data logging software yet to be decided (plan to use the machine stock without for a bit to get used to it), so will want thermocouples connected to the computer eventually. What hardware do i need, it looks like I'll need some kind of signal converter to send a signal from the thermocouple to the computer via usb so i log temperatures. Are there any tried and tested hardware solutions most people are using for this?

Is it worth spending $20 extra per thermocouple from Taiwan, or can i wait and get something similar price here once i've used the machine analogue for a while?

    Thanks for the advice.

Having the thermocouple installed for delivery would be good. Providing it has USB connectivity you could use the Heatsnobs temperature datalogger and Coffeesnobs software to manage your roasts.

Have today ordered a Heatsnob, figured i can get away with a heatsnob for bean temp, and the analogue thermometer provided with my roaster for ambient temp? Might get another heatsnob at a later date if i'm finding it difficult to dial in the roasts without precise ambient temperature readings.

This sound like a reasonable plan to kick things off?

Very excited to start roasting with a proper drum roaster, my 4-5 years of first stovetop pan roasting, and then stovetop coffee shaker (weird Japanese device - significantly better than a pan) roasting are hopefully going to be some small help, lots to learn Have been getting pretty good results with the shaker up until now. Will take the stovetop shaker back to Japan and leave there for the holiday roasts when we visit from now on
    it's all coming together people!

    Behmor Coffee Roaster
Go Andy, that was a quick delivery. Ordered yesteday, delivered Sydney today.
Plugged it in with the coffee snob software, worked immediately.
Quality product by the looks of it.
