    The Coffee Machinist

    Cafelat Coffee Tamper and Accessories
    Hi y'all,

I'm the technician formerly known as rick_bond. I used to run the workshop for a well-known service company here in Melbourne, but I decided recently it was time to go out on my own and take things to the next level!

I've been around these parts for a while, and CS was my introduction to the coffee industry so it's great to be on board as a sponsor.

I can help you with all equipment repairs domestic and commercial, maintenance and servicing, restorations and modifications. At the moment I'm just sticking to service work, so sadly I can't assist you with any retail sales inquiries except to offer my advice from a tech's perspective.

Please check out the website at The Coffee Machinist to learn more about what I do, and I look forward to being of service to the CS community.

    Cheers!

With Christmas fast approaching, may I humbly suggest that if you're in Melbourne and you've been thinking of getting your machine serviced so it's primed and ready for the silly season, now is the time to pick up the phone!

Turnaround times are generally pretty dismal in the weeks leading up to Christmas, and it becomes increasingly problematic to get anything done. December and January are our version of the Italian August shut-down. With that in mind, get in early and make sure your equipment is in tip top shape for holiday entertaining!

In other workshop news, I've been busy restoring a 70's La Marzocco GS (where it all began), repairing and servicing a few E61 machines and more than a few Silvias, and even custom-fitting a few Coffeelab tamper bases.

    Have a good one,

    Rick.

Just a quick heads up for SA Snobs,

I will be heading west with the Scace and a judicious selection of parts at the end of this week, to spend Christmas in the Adelaide Hills.

If you would like to sneak in a quick pre-christmas service or Scace pump / temperature calibration and you are within a stone's throw of Adelaide or the Hills, hit me up! Would be only too happy to help and meet some SA peeps.

I'd also like to take this opportunity to thank the CS community for your warm reception and custom this year. It's never easy in the early days of a new business, but I can safely say I made the right decision, and I can't wait for 2013! Cheers one and all.

Grand sale, grand sale, grand sale.

Any CSr's that are in the market for a Silvia V3, I present to you the following:

I picked these machines up from one of my roaster clients. They had arrived from the factory with faulty boilers, either failing during the bench test or shortly afterward! I have replaced the defective boilers, bench tested and added a few niceties - an LCD temperature display (easily removable if you don't want it), and a low-profile showerscreen bolt. Condition of the machines - basically as new. One is spotless, and it's accessories are present and unopened - protective film still on the drip tray. The other has some very very slight scuffs from cups. Neither has made more than a few cups - mmmm new Silvia smell!

I also have available a demo Compak K3, never ground a single bean - ordered it for a customer but once it was on his bench he decided he wanted the polished K3T instead.

I want this gear gone ASAP - The boxed Silvia I will let go for $460, the other for $400. The grinder is yours for $380 with either machine. Pickup from my workshop in Northcote VIC, cash or EFT only.

    Hi all,

Got some bits and pieces here that I'm sick of looking at. Below pricing is cash money deals, picked up at the workshop in Northcote, I'm hoping to avoid freight if at all possible.

Mazzer Kony doser / timer switch model. This is an ex cafe grinder and it shows, but the blades have been done recently and have 100's of kg's left in them. I've given it a really good clean out, rebuilt the doser so it's super smooth, and done a few minor repairs (a few threads damaged by the previous owner). A good opportunity for someone to step up to a big conical at home, or put it into service in your cafe $950

Diadema Junior HX machine with a solenoid E61 group. This machine has a really good rep here on CS and elsewhere for good reason - it's simple, reliable and well built with top quality commercial parts, svelte case and a generous drip tray. Perfect for taking to the office or as a first foray into HX territory. Traded in, been serviced and all good to go. New pressurestat plus all the usual service / bench test items. Cosmetically very good, few scuffs here and there but nothing objectionable. $1100

Wega Max 6.4 / Compak K6 64mm flat burr commercial grinder. Burrs good, but easy to replace if you feel the urge. Given a good clean up, working perfectly but missing a few plakky parts - the doser cover and the grind tray, readily available from the importer. Cosmetics good. $240

Mokita Junior Great little single boiler machine, 57mm group with brass boiler. Serviced, good to go. Cosmetics excellent. $180

Faema Amica 2 the quirky but oh-so-fun single boiler machine, great start in proper espresso land. I mean, just look at it fer chrissakes, how could you not love it! Nothing missing, nothing broken, cosmetics very good. $120

Climax deli grinder working but could do with new blades, these are available through Coffee Machine Technologies in Melbourne, Climax are still around and producing commercial grinders for shop use. Cosmetics good, needs service / cleanup. $160

Get in touch with me for specifics on any of the above.

    Cheers!

    FS: Rancilio Rocky Doserless (MELB)

As new Rocky doserless grinder for sale. No box, but I have the booklet.

Ex demo, spotless condition, it's only done a few hundred grams, got it as part of a contra deal and now it needs a new home!

Looking for a buyer that can pick up from Northcote or Bentleigh MELB, would rather not post it but I will if I can't find a local buyer.

    Price is $350.

    Thanks!

FS: Astoria CMA commercial lever group, brand new (MELB)

Brand new CMA commercial lever group for sale.

I bought this for a single group project machine which never eventuated, so it has to go.

This group is fitted with a heavy circa. 11 bar spring. If the buyer wants a lower peak pressure I can fit a 9 bar spring instead. There are a few tiny dings in the chrome and the group neck is not completely polished, but it's how it arrived from CMA.

Not pictured but items I'll chuck in, are a very nice bottomless portafilter and a new boiler flange gasket.

Looking for a buyer that can pick up from Northcote or Bentleigh MELB, would rather not post it but I will if I can't find a local buyer.

    Price is $500.

    Thanks!

    Hi All,

I have available for sale a 2008 Giotto Premium Plus, fully serviced and in great condition. A customer was in the rare position of having TWO spare giottos, and opted to leave one in my hands to service and sell.

This machine lived at a holiday house so has not seen a heap of use, however I have given it a very thorough service regardless. Cosmetic condition is excellent, some scuffing on the trays and light cleaning marks on the group and one small scratch in a side panel, but you'd be looking pretty hard to spot them.

As regards service items, this machine has been fettled to the very best of my ability and is PURRING!

To summarise: Hot water and steam valves/wands rebuilt, group rebuilt, anti-vac replaced, pressurestat contacts swapped, custom restrictor installed and temperature/pressure tweaked. New group seal and IMS precision shower screen installed, along with an upgraded roller micro switch and a sexy red neon indicator lamp. Group inspected for scale and descaling was not necessary. This is roughly a $350 service bill.

So, if you are in the market for a truly excellent machine on a budget, this just might be your thing. It's ready to roll at the workshop, alls I have to do is pick up the forgotten portafilter.

Price is $1600 ex. gst. I will also be offering a 3 month back to base warranty with this machine.

    Thanks!

Just completed restoration (see the vintage extreme machines thread) on a single group Bo Ema lever and it is now for sale to clear the decks for the next project.

I had not seen a single group until this one came along, bought here on CS from Gustopher earlier in the year. It was in OK condition at that point but cosmetically it was pretty dire and internally there were many issues that really had to be rectified before the machine could be used, much less sold as restored.

So six ish months and about 100 hours of labour and many new parts sourced or fabricated, here we are. The machine is modernised, fettled, presents really well and performs exactly how a big commercial dipper group lever should, the characteristics of pressure and temperature are textbook examples of how things should be, which is a testament to the skills at Bo Ema in the early days. They may look a bit agricultural but dang it they work really well.

There are many more details in the vintage machines thread but suffice to say everything that needed to be done has been done, plus niceties like new auto fill system, element thermal protection, pressurestat/SSR combo, new spring, new element, boiler insulation, anti-vac valve added and vented to drip tray, new valve knobs, gauge, and of course custom PTFE valve gaskets and seals.

The only job left to do is source a new Perspex cup guard as the original is cracked.

    Some pics:

Suffice to say restored vintage single group levers don't come up for sale often at less than ludicrous prices, so if you've been dreaming about acquiring one, now just might be your moment!

To recoup costs on purchase of the machine, parts and have something for my time (these projects are not money spinners, I do it because I love it) the price is $4300 plus GST.

    More pics to follow.

    Cheers, Rick
