    Difference between Pressurised/Non-Pressurised??

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
I have a couple of mates that have pressurised baskets on their machines (entry level $200-$300 I think). We were wondering if someone could kindly explain the difference of what actually happens (the process inside the PF or whatever) to extract the espresso from a pressurised vs a non- pressurised machine. How does the coffee get pushed through the grinds without pressure? I remember on the old Breville a heck of a mess if the PF was taken off too early.
Also I have read that the crema is (false?) on the pressurised models.

Thanks in advance for your expertise and patience

    Chris

    Non-pressurised basket:
The water is forced through the grinds.
The finer the grind the more resistance they give to the water flow.

    Pressurised basket:
The resistance to the water is created by the single escape hole in the basket.
This creates false crema as the liquid is forced out like from a garden hose on "full blast" as opposed to "shower".

The force of the exiting liquid mixes with air on the way out and creates a froth that simulates crema.

Just moments ago I added an article entitled "How a Pressurized or Enhanced Portafilter Works" to my website. its fairly basic but should answer some of your questions. It is linked in the "COFFEE COLLEGE" area on the RIGHT hand side of the main page.

Redzone, take a peek at "Filter Baskets" post currently near the top in the sub $500 forum.

    1 - go to my website: http://www.EspressoMyEspresso.com
2 - look at the right half of the main page
3 - scroll down as necessary to find the "Coffee College" area
4 - The article in question is currently the last one in that section

Why dont I post the direct URL link to the article? Because I have a counter only on the main page. I do not make money from the site and so the "hits" the main page receives keeps me motivated, which my current busy schedule makes it difficult to do..... I am currently rehearsing with my blues group for our first concert coming up in May (as well as my daily practice time trying to maintain my mediocrity on my instrument), and it looks like I have a future with a local coffee shop chain doing new barista training, quality control in 4 shops, sample roasting and cupping assistance, and more! Thankfully, it will be part time!
