I had a laugh well i cant help at that distance

you could look for a 2nd hand silvia, maybe a brasilia "lady", Brugnetti Simona.

i would look for something of Italian build quality......

maybe a 2nd hand small HX but harder to find <500 (but possible)

keep an eye on craigslist and the bay etc

good grinder <200 to me means 2nd hand as well......

    likely to get a
    rossi RR45

if you lucky, but more chance @ 300
    mazzer mini or super jolly

some other ex commercial grinder would be possible but your going to have to wait for something good to show up... and it might / would need new burrs.

IMO your better off saving a bit more and finding a small HX machine and a good grinder 2nd hand somewhere.

Totally shagged from 10 years of cafe use?

Ill have 100 in good condition at $300.....Pretty unrealistic when both commonly sell here 2nd hand for at least twice that ::)

Re: Can anyone recommend a machine under $500 that isnt an Ikon

hey i never said you could get them easy or every day
but bargains do come and go, and you have to be out there looking and be prepared to make and offer with $$ in your hand on the right thing

hes in the states and that means lots of places to look with more potential to come across a deal worth looking at.

@ $500 its a challenge to get good coffee out of a new machine, i would be looking 2nd hand ex commercial.

while hes looking he could be saving $$ per week and be in a better position to buy better

    its just an opinion

Yes- also a good buy and probably better than the Ikon...

I bought a Via Venezia in about 2002. *I used it until I got a Sunbeam EM6910 in 07, and then gave it to my brother who uses it to this day. *Personally I think there are better machines for the price, although I havent tried the new (-er looking) model. *Espressos are OK once you extract the plastic sprung thingo out of the group. *Its also OK for milk (again I removed the plastic attachment), but never got to do any latte art (could be as much to do with my lack of skill as anything). *Its pretty robust, simple and easy to keep clean. *Never had a technical issue with it... unlike the EM6910 which makes much better coffee but suffers in the reliability stakes... as others have pointed out
