Second Hand Gaggia Carezza Silver - Is it worth keeping?

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
    Hi All,

Apologies if this is in the wrong category, but Im new to the site and this board seemed to be the closest to what I was looking for.

I have recently inherited a Gaggia Carezza Silver from my girlfriends parents. Its getting quite old (still has original VHS!!! instruction video), at minimum I think its 3 years old, but likely to be older.

It hasnt been used for an extended period of time and probably should be serviced before use. It was never serviced during the period of time it was in use.

Im not sure how much servicing costs? But my question is, is this machine worth spending money to get up and running? Or would I be better off buying something new?

    Look forward to your advice!

    Cheers

It would only have been around $200 when new so probably not worth spending too much on. Why not just try it out and see how it works?

Run some water into a glass and see how it comes out i.e nice and clean or full of muck?

Rubber seals can deteriorate with time so check for leaks e.g. does water drip from the steam wand? If you cant get a good seal at the group when pouring a shot it may just need a new group gasket which should only be $10-15

As with any machine you will need freshly roasted and freshly ground coffee for best results.

Great thanks. Yes, its the various seals that Im worried about. I would imagine without regular use they will deteriorate more quickly.

Might give it a test run and see.

    Cheers

Put some water in it and let it heat up, should be pretty obvious if it is cactus

You can replace all o-ring seals for about $10, descale the boiler, its a very easy machine to fix, give it a bit of love, keep it out of land fill, these are worth fixing.
