    EM2300 gushing, and/or blocking up!

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
    hey folks!

long time listener first time poster...

i have an em2300 (sunbeam cafe ristretto) with the breville single wall filter set. and a conical burr em0450.

if i grind at a setting of 9, my machine gushes pretty bad. about 10 seconds for 25 ml. bit of a watery taste there
if i grind at a setting of 8, my machine blocks up and cracks the shits, almost every time. sometimes it sort of works, but its a gamble.

is this simply a limitation of the el cheapo machine? does it not have have enough pressure?

the other "weak link" in my setup, from what i can gather from these forums is that i use the plastic tamper still... but im not sure if i can see a connection to the issue im having.

    is there something im missing?

ive tired heaps of different tamping (on scales as well) which seems to not really change anything.

    thanks!

    james

more likely a limit of el cheapo grinder

sound like you need to grind on 9 and up dose and tamp heavy

    thanks for the reply

the dose is already pretty high though... i fill the basket, tap, put more in, smooth and tamp (30 lbs)

Hmmm, What beans are you using? how old are they? etc (Ive had the same sort of problem with my EM3600 with homecut single walls) Ive found that if I updose on the larger grind and tamp heavilly, it seems to work quite well.

I would suggest getting a different tamper... the plastic rubbishy thing is only really useful as a bean-scoop Ive found

argh! ok so i have been using the single shot thingo. all this talk of updosing made me try the large basket again. i dosed it up huge and tamped real hard, and i got probably a bit more than 15 seconds on the extraction! thats some results. it was, umm, acceptable. add some nicely steamed milk and it wasnt a bad coffee!

now ive had a couple too many coffees today bzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

    thanks for help guys

using padre beans by the way. yums
