Newbie questions about Breville/Sunbeam in NZ

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
    Hi all,

Im a newbie at the whole home coffee making thing and have come into the possession of a (brand new) Breville Ikon BES400 for the sum of $170NZ (~$150AUD), which sounded pretty good having read some of the recommendations on this forum. *Ive run a few shots through it using the standard baskets and coffee I got ground at a local coffee shop (C4 coffee in Christchurch), and am happy so far, but intend to go to the next level by getting a grinder and better baskets, hence my questions:

    - Does anyone know where to get suitable unpressurised baskets for the Ikon in NZ? *Ive found the numbers for service centers for Breville and Krups in NZ, was planning to call them on Monday, is this the way to go?
    - Im looking at the Sunbeam EM0480 or EM0450 (probably 0480), any recommendations on where to get this, or should I just go to a big chain store place?

As for a tamper, even being inexperienced I realised that the breville one is horrible, and am planning to use the machine shop at uni to make one up on the lathe. *Am I OK just making one with a flat base, or does it have to be curved? Flat is a LOT easier if Im making one myself.

Lastly thanks to everyone on this forum for being informative and helpful - we appear to have similar brand availability as you guys over the ditch so the buying advice was pretty useful. *Also go ABs - am about to go watch the HK game on TV, hopefully theyll make the Wallabies fans sad :P

    Welcome Hydron.... [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

Great to have you as part of the CS Community mate. If you run into trouble trying to locate unpressurised baskets for the new Ikon, Im sure someone from this side of the ditch would be able to grab them for you and send em over. Only takes a cry for help ;)

Regarding the grinder, the EM0480/450 is regarded as an appliance by most and not regularly stocked by coffee specialist stores, so Id just grab one from a local Dept store with the best price.

All the best and Happy Brewing, :)

    Thanks Mal,

I suspected that would be the case for the grinder, will check out some department stores tomorrow. Hopefully Breville NZ will come to the party RE the baskets; will know next week I guess, I was just wondering if any fellow NZers had experience getting them.

My condolences to the Wallabies, they were better in the first half but the ABs fought back well in the second half :)

    I had a laugh... ;D

My better half is a Kiwi so whenever the All Blacks give us a beating, I get my nose rubbed in it for weeks after.....

    Ohhh the pain. ::)

I tried finding an unpressurised basket for the Ikon a while back and it was really frustrating. I got the list of suppliers and called the ones that were in Wellington to see what they could do and was met with either:
    - we dont sell them, or
    - I have no idea what youre talking about, or
    - Ill check if we can get them in and call you about it (which, of course, they never did)

It could just be the Wgtn stores being terrible. I would advocate trying your luck calling them and seeing where you get. If they dont have the Ikon unpressurised baskets then ask for krups. If they dont have that see if they have any Breville Bar Italia baskets (I think?) as Ive heard those will fit in just as well. Anyway, I ended up just taking to my basket with a dremel and cutting the bottom off. It works pretty well. I do intend to get an actual basket one day but good things take time. If you do find someone who can supply them could you PM me?

As for the grinder theres no shame in heading to the big chain stores. You can often get some pretty great specials in there that you wouldnt find elsewhere. I think a brand new EM0450 goes for about $180 and the EM0480 about $220, which is a pretty reasonable price for an entry grinder.

And yeah, ditch the Breville tamper as quickly as possible. I found the 51mm Impress tamper fits the Breville baskets perfectly if you dont feel like making one yourself

Re: Newbie questions about Breville/Sunbeam in NZ

Well I got in touch with all 3 breville service agents in christchurch, they all knew what I was talking about but none had them in stock. One store had ordered them once in the past but said that it had taken 5 weeks to get, they rang up auckland for me and that is the ETA if I want one too. IMHO 5 weeks is riduculous, apparently its because they only do occasional big shipments but one would think that they could afford to chuck a few odds and sods in a box once a week or something and send them over from australia.

Krups baskets are apparently available only from australia according to the seemingly knowledgable fellow i spoke to at the service agent (he commented that he had converted his own machine to non-pressurised baskets, and knew exactly what I wanted and why). If get baskets direct from australia i may as well just get breville australia to send me theirs - I checked and they DID have them.

The last option i guess is to just buy an old bar italia on trademe - Ive been offered one for $50 inc postage but that is a little more than i wanted to spend on a $15 basket, though it looks to be the easiest option and Id get another milk jug as part of the deal. Guessing the bar italia portafilters dont fit the Ikon but if they did then id also be up a portafilter to possibly mod. Is it worth getting the ESP4 filters over those from the ESP2? The older machines go for less second hand.

RE the grinder purchase, I ended up getting the sunbeam 0480 from harvey norman - they didnt have stock of the 0450 and took $70 off the normal $240 price when I asked! All up i got my Ikon and 0480 for $340 so Im happy.
