I had a laugh I was coming in here to ask what people thought about it ;D (seriously). It says 2 year in home warranty. These things have to be made by someone, arent they just rebranded.?

It is not that it is sold by Aldi...

It is the mass marketing *and availability (Special) leading to a cheep Auto that will be abused by many.... *Regardless of who made it... They all need to be maintained or they will fail.

    NOTE: Limited STOCKS *;)

    Re: $400 Auto from Aldi

Dont get me wrong I am not bagging Aldi I am using an LCD monitor at present of theirs. The big problem apart from it being an Auto is that it is a dirt cheap auto.

$5000 Autos fail and need service, $2000 ones need service and who is going to service a $400 one when you wont be able to buy most of the parts?

Likely factual errors "Twin boiler system" I would be stunned if it had twin boilers at that price more likely twin thermoblocks. Self cleaning yes it may drop the pucks into a bin but the rest of the machine will not magically clean itself and this will be the main reason for failure.

Much as I would love to be proven wrong I doubt it ;)

I bought one of these today. With Aldis 60 return policy there is no risk.
So far I have made a few cups, and they were fine. Ill keep posting my experiences.

Make sure you keep ALL the documentation and packaging in case something goes wrong.
Aldi has been known to be quite anal about those sort of things when you try to return something.

I bought one of these. looks nice enough

What temperature should I set the coffee for best quality hot coffee?
As hot as possible without ruining coffee.
Never had a coffee machine where you can choose temperature, it just poured. Last coffee machine made warm coffee, but one before was perfect, but no idea what temp it would have been

What should I do to clean it, Just descale it now and again like a manual coffee machine or is there some other cleaning involved? I notice they include a group head removal tool. So I guess that has to be removed and cleaned every so often

I have been using mine on the highest temperature, it makes an excellent coffee. So far, I am pleased.
Ill give it a good workout, and see how it lasts.

    an excellent coffee
Me first *;D An Auto by its nature can make an OK coffee when compared to a manual machine at best, excellent compared to what? A stale tin of International Roast Caterers Blend?

Apart from my cynicism of this $400 wonder make very sure you clean the machine thoroughly internally. Coffee grinds and oils in particular will attract more oils and eventually totally stop it from working or make it work less well in short order. As there will be no backup service facilities unless you do it you will finish up putting it in the bottom cupboard in the kitchen in the state a lot of the fully autos finish up ::)

It might be rubbish too, but you can try it for 60 days. Which other company offers that?

Actually, a lot of companies do. *Apple (certainly in the US), and me (Cuppacoffee) for roasted bean sales.

The difference with a retailer like Aldi is that it is likely that the manufacturer, not the retailer, will pay the cost of returned items.

Yeah today is the first time I"ve given it quite a bit of work. Its really good. Crema on top, perfect coffee. and the dual boiler makes a HUGE difference for steaming milk. No wonder I was never very good at it, only ever had a single boiler cheap espresso machine.

I dont have anything bad to say about it yet. Amazing machine for the price. Home made coffee has never tasted so good.

The aldi auto, is like a high performance state of the art japanese made car that can do 0-100mph in 6 seconds with all the bells and whistles. Yours is more like a old fashioned stately rolls royce. They both do the job well, just your rolls does 0-100mph in a couple of minutes & lacks the features of an aldi auto.

I think thats how you compare. Yours has style, grace, sophistication, performance. Aldi auto isnt about style though , its about getting the job done fast and well. So far I believe it delivers high performance coffees.
I will try and take a photo of the coffee grinds in the next day or so
to get an opinion about the quality of granules created.

Read the following. The reviewer was using Vittoria coffee, which I imagine is a perfect match for this little beauty.

    http://knowyourproduct.wordpress.com/2009/08/27/review-of-aldi-lumina-signature-espresso-machine-179-00/

I was given a box of Aldi branded chocolate once, for which I am forever grateful. Just one taste confirmed for me that I would never have any desire to walk into one of their stores.

The last sentence in the review speaks volumes ( Unfortunately this machine is all gloss and no substance. I really couldn’t take it back to ALDI fast enough.)
To be fair the machine reviewed is not the same super auto being discussed here. ;)

I"ll take a picture of the crema tomorrow.

Remember that review is not for the new aldi machine. Possibly this new one wasnt even made in the same factory.

Here is a picture of the coffee grinds. I think its a good grind, but dont have much to compare it with. Of note is the lack of dust. Almost no dust at all is created, which as I understand it, is a good sign for a grinder. This is setting 4.5 range 1.0 - 8.0

    Yuk!
A good grinder makes all the grinds the same size.
You have boulders and pebbles and sizes between in that picture.

I think youll find the Rolls can do 0-100 in 10.5 seconds despite weighing almost *2300kg.

No dust... What does that mean ?

What I can see is a range of particulates from small crushed bits to big chunks and every thing in-between....

Lacking in grind consistency other than being consistently inconsistent.

If the puck looks like a fine particle board rather than craft wood... Then ya grinder is at the bottom end of the market... *Never mind though... As it gets blunt, it will just crush the beans and you may get a little more dust.

Do not mean to burst your bubble, but a bottom end grinder is $200 plus and only once your in the $400 - $1200 range; do you get an acceptable level of consistency.. *

So the burrs and the plastic in this unit just can not compete. *It does the job and it is fit for purpose.... *But that is not for providing great coffee... *It is a peer pressure thing - I got a coffee machine and I only have to push a button.

With fresh beans... Better than instant = YES... *

But lets call a spade a spade and not a Back hoe - who needs a RR *:D

Are you drinking the coffee you make or putting it into the fuel tank of your:

I have seen stuff like this get added to tobacco and rolled up *;) It is not about dust or no dust it is about particle size consistency and the shot above shows a full spread of sizes therefore it is Average to poor.

By all of your posts you obviously have an Aldi thing going on so we will hold all your post in the regard they deserve ::)

I hope none of you are judges, you have no evidence to support your opinions!
Quite right we have not used said device but based on the usage of plenty of machines over in some cases decades (not me) how possibly could this thing stack up. As I mentioned earlier it is certainly not an Aldi bashing exercise as any dealings with them I have had have been good. To my initial post it is just a preemptive warning to the unwary and unknowing purchasers of these of the pitfalls that await.

If I wanted to have an Aldi bash then within my main area of my business I could happilly talk about the 6 Kites that were sold by Aldi a couple of years ago of which only 2 worked well out of the packet and 2 more with some modifications could be made work *OK and the other 2 sold were RAGS with STICKS no matter what I tried. "It doesnt matter it was only $10" was fairly common and the people couldnt be bothered taking them back for a credit. More and more often in retail I see buyers with no clues doing the numbers and basing decisions based purely on turnover/profit/return and have ZERO regard for suitable for the job or best value available.

I hope this espresso maker doesnt come under the category of Rags with Sticks

    Crema on top, perfect coffee.
    I had a laugh ;D

Fully Auto machines make a notch above shite coffee. If they made perfect coffee then there would be no barristas employed anywhere.

It might be rubbish too, but you can try it for 60 days. Which other company offers that?
I could go to the local dump and pick and try some rubbish for 60 days doesnt mean I will.

    You posted coffee grind pic.
The particle sizes are all over the place, indicating poor grinding performance.
The resulting poor grind = poor coffee extraction.

The aldi auto, is like a high performance state of the art japanese made car that can do 0-100mph in 6 seconds with all the bells and whistles
    Its Not.

More like an Indian made Tata with two flat tyes a flat battery and no suspension..........sitting in a scrap yard waiting to be crushed.

Appart from that its an awesome machine. ;)

Ive since lost my cruel streak, but once when I was little I peed on an ants nest and found it very amusing to watch the offended little insects scurry about in a frenzy of outrage.

I wonder if this nest has just been peed upon ;)

Was it outrage, or was it simply that they objected to being pissed on? ;)

    Re: $400 Auto from Aldi

The two Aldi supporters have both gone quiet.

    I love Aldi.

My last PC was from Aldi and lasted many years (until recently).
    My treadmill is from Aldi.
I recently bought a new clothes dryer from them.
I shop there about once a month for certain groceries.

Unfortunately they do stock some rubbish.

Because Id been happy with my PC, I bought my wife a laptop from them but it was a dud.
After getting it back from being repaired (unfixed) I took it back for a refund and the Manager refused because he said one of the manuals was missing.
When I informed him that the manual had been sent with the machine when it went for repair and he had no proof that they hadnt lost it and nor returned it to me, he gave in and gave me my refund.

So I dont think you can call me an Aldi basher but artlover and atropine both appear to be Aldi stooges and I really cant stand that kind of ambush marketing.

First of all, I am not an Aldi stooge.
Secondly, what more do you expect me to say? As I have said, it makes a very good coffee, it comes with a 60 day satisfaction return, and letss see what I think in a few weeks. Maybe others will post their experiences.
Perhaps a connoisseur will do a thorough review. I am very curious about others first hand experiences, especially from those who are long time coffee enthusiasts.

Well youve only been here for three days and not had anything to say on anything else but this machine.

No introduction, no questions, none of the usual interaction from a new member.

We like to get to know people around here.
What would you think if you looked at your posting history?

Do you think atropine might be an Aldi stooge? ;)

The snob part in CoffeeSnob triggered within me: ::) in relation to this thread. I now feel compelled to contribute: pfttt! We are coffeesnobs darn it and when new members dont bother pre-reading other threads to get a feel for the sites modus operandi then perhaps their comments should be allowed to rotate out of the Last 20 without a response or a second thought. Like the obnoxious family member who is too loud and drunk at the funeral wake with some statements perhaps it is better to stare at the floor and hope that someday that person may be as embarrassed for themselves as we are all now. I mean seriously... Aldi Auto being debated when there are some people creating miraculous coffee with fresh roasted, a great grinder and a plunger! Lets talk about that and hope that the Aldi auto owners move onto the next Aldi offering and tell the UnderpantSnobs Forum how they have all wasted thief money on Kelvin Kline! ::)

Wow, you lot are a tough audience sometimes!

Hey artlover and atropine, as you have found "peeing on the ants" is not always the best method of introduction.

Im happy that both of you have taken a step away from instant coffee and have not only bought a coffee machine that grinds on demand but you have gone to the trouble to find a web site to share your joy and learn some tips.

Thats a great start. Remember to tell your friends to stop buying instant coffee too!

Read the fine manual (RTFM), then have a play with the adjustments to see what works and what doesnt. As a rule, the finest grind and the biggest dose will get the best shots from most auto machines as they tend to use a very small coffee baskets and typically Aussies use very large cups.

Next step in your journey will be to make sure you feed the new machine with good quality, fresh coffee. There are plenty of sponsors to the left that can provide roasted whole beans. When you are ready you might even consider roasting your own.

Welcome to CoffeeSnobs and if you need some help we are all happy share some advice to help you on your journey to better coffee (unless you are a stooge for Aldi in which case we will burn you at the stake at sunset).

Look forward to seeing some pictures of how you are going too.

    8-)
