how fresh are the beans? do they have a roast date?

12-bar is quite high for espresso.. however workable. Try to keep your dose and tamp consistent and then adjust on the grinder for change. Try grinding a little courser, with a little lesser dose, and a firmer tamp. If you are getting lots of grinds in the cup, and the basket it sludgy its probably too fine.

    keep at it, practice !

Firstly I dont think you can rely on the accuracy of the manometer on domestic machines. That aside, if you keep getting steam coming out of the group after flusing for a minute then it sounds like it is running too hot.

Is there any chance you have the steam switch on whilst you are brewing? If not I would be taking it back to the store. If you bought the machine from the online seller which comes up under a google search ...... good luck getting good service.

Hi, if this is a single boiler machine (which it looks like it is), are you priming the boiler before pulling your shot?

(eg for a lelit single boiler it means opening the steam valve and turning the pump until a steady stream of water comes out of the wand, then closing the valve, switching off the pump and letting the boiler heat up to temp, then pulling the shot, then steaming (and then priming the boiler again ready for next time))

Your old sunbeam was probably a thermoblock which didnt require the boiler to be primed.
