    Tim,
The insulation material is called HT Armaflex. See this thread for more information

In its current home ... the IC grinder looks very small and out of place. I also think that I need to get an upgrade for the steam wand, one that is 360 instead of just forward and back. Does anyone have one lying around?

Also may need to play with steam tips. The 4 hole tip is making micro foam a tough ask. Good thing is that next weekend Im using it to make coffee for a community event at church. Ill have 200 cups to practice my milk skills on. That should help me improve quickly ... and I dont have to drink my practice cups. Should be a fun night

I found that last year at the Sydney Aromafest my milk skills improved a good deal after 8 - 10 hours straight.

The commercial 4 hole tips are good for steaming commercial amounts of milk.

For home use I have wound some copper wire through the holes to effectively decrease the diameter, and this makes small amounts of micro-foam possible. If it works you could: 1 leave it as is, 2 use stainless wire, 3 buy a new tip.

    Have fun practicing!

Im torn between modding the tip to make it easier or practicing since I think that I should be able to make it work.

Im actually thinking of buying a whole new steam arm that would make positioning the arm more simple and I dont think that I could get the current tip off the arm. Current arm only moves in an ark forward to back. BUT the cost of the whole system would be greatly increased. I think that the whole lot currently owes me about $350! The steam arm would be at least another $100 ... I really have been lucky with this purchase!

Tomorrow is another day and Ill try a few more jugs of milk. I love this process and continues to make me wary of buying coffee from anyone else!

    hi
if yopu change to the ball joint arm, you will also need to buy the top pivot jointas this screws into the steam valve body

parts needed are 703474 steam arm assembly
    and 703475 ball joint adaptor

whilst your at it service the steam valves with new seals

    hi micheal

looks like you have rewired the machine

hope you have used high temp multi stranded cable

if not the insulation gets brittle and falls off

these are a good machine, but for some reason most of the simonellis i come across have been very poorly serviced

    Graham,

I havent touched the wiring except to clean the coffee off it. It doesnt look like anyone else has touched it so I think that it is original.

Im not convinced that this machine was serviced at all during its life. There was so much scale throughout the machine that Im surprised that it managed to make espresso at all.

I did buy the steam wand today along with the adapter for the top and it did set me back more than the cost of the machine.

More things to play with.... Now I need a grinder that I can do up to match the machine.

hey michel_c ... as always, very nice work on your NS!

I am having the same trouble with steaming and the 4 hole tip. Ive read of inserting toothpicks inside the tip to block some of the holes ... but I was just now thinking ... (dangerous, I know)

How about re-braising the holes closed with lead-free solder, then boring out our own, smaller 4 hole tip? I may try it.

What do you think of your machine after insulating the boiler? Do you notice the pressurestat cycling less?

Re: Nuova Simonelli 2 group bargain!!!

Ive upgraded the steam wand to ss but it still has a 4 hole tip. I think that at the moment Im just concentrating on getting good micro foam with this new tip. What i have found that seems to help a lot is to make sure that the milk is really really cold.

I figure that if a trained pro can make micro foam with this type of tip ... eventually I should be able to do something reasonable. May take a while... but currently still making very reasonable coffees.

It is all a fun learning experience, Im now almost ready to get another machine to do up ... just cant talk since my wife is strangling me while I type this..ahhhhhhhh
