    Hi Guys

I have just acquired a La Cimbali Junior D!
It appears to be an ancient model with bakelite handles?
If anyone can give me some advice that would be great as i have never restored anything like this before.
Dont know if I am crazy or not to attempt this but should be fun... I hope* :o

    Hi,
    Does it work at all?
Or is it a complete rebuild?

I havent even tried to start it up yet as i dont have the right fitting for the tap hose. So not sure what condition its in. But i am suspecting its broken.
Here are some more pics of the inside

    See the floor pan!
Its rusted out bad, so will need to source a new one somehow :(
Rang a few parts places but they dont have them, they suggested i get a sheet metal place to fabricate one but i bet its $$$...
The front right leg popped right through the rust when i put it on the table so yeah...

    Its Aliiiive!
Well sort of, it turns on and I hear a healthy hum, but turned it off quick as I have not been able to attach flowing water but a good start.

... And yes the particles under the machine are flaked off bits of rust* ::)

A word of caution - you need to establish whether theres water in the boiler before you go switching things on willy nilly. Id suggest pulling one of the terminals off the element (with the machine UNPLUGGED of course) until you can make sure the autofill is doing its thing.

La Cimbali Junior D Restoration - Help Appreciated :)

    Thanks Rick
Yeah the boiler has some water in it as i heard it sloshing around when i moved it into my car :)
But I was worried about doing damage so only had it turned on for literally about 5 seconds.
Wont be turning it on again until I have the water connection for it.
Hopefully nothing was harmed from when I tested it quickly :-/

    Ok Some progress.
I still dont have the right plumbing fittings but got impatient, so I cable tied my garden hose onto the water feed line from the machine.

Re: La Cimbali Junior D Restoration - Help Appreciated :)

But the old gal still has some probs:
    1. Sadly the water tap doesnt work!
    2. The valve below the water tap is leaking a tad
    3. Badly Rusted Floor pan needs replacing
    4. She needs of a good wash. ;D

So does anyone have an unwanted floor pan lying around and any ideas what might be wrong with the water tap? ;)
Im thinking scale in the line or possibly the knob is not opening the valve inside?

Oh and any ideas on the weird steam tip?

    Thanks guys

If the ball goes up out of sight the boiler is being overfilled. If it only goes as high as in your picture then its fine. :)

Thats the anti-vac valve and some steam and sputtering from it on start up is normal. Once the boiler starts pressurizing the steam and sputtering should stop. As part of your restoration I would do a rebuild (Descaling and replacement of washer and o-ring.) of the valve.

    Hi Javaphile

Yeah it kept rising and disappeared out of sight...
I am assuming it would be the autofill probe level?
I will figure out how to adjust it and see if that helps, but could it be anything else if its not that?

    Thanks mate

La Cimbali Junior D Restoration - Help Appreciated :)

Okay I took the water tap arm off last night due to it not working.
Blew into the tube and no air flow so that ruled out the boiler fitting.

I love how this thing is designed, I just had to take the c-clip off the turning assembly and it all pulled out.
Out dropped a bit of scale, gave it a clean and put it back together.
Blew into the tube and now there is no more blockage :)

So next thing is to fix my overfilling boiler, hopefully its just that water level probe.
Once its all working right then i will attempt the strip down when i get a new floor pan.

    Good work.

Re the steam tip, there are a few varieties of tips for this machine (at least 3), so you have a bit of choice. Mine has 4 holes all pointing out at an angle. I have reduced the size of the holes and it works great.

For the overfilling boiler, take out the probe and clean it with find wet and dry, if its not clean it could be preventing the boiler fill working.

Re the base/pan, can you cut out the bottom rusty bit, leaving the surround, then weld/rivet a new base plate?

    Cheers

    Same project...

Hey, I'm just about to start exactly the same project on a late 1980s Junior D - looks the same as yours.

How did your restoration go? Any tips for me?
