    vintage gaggia 3 group

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
Have just got my hands on this puppy. 1950s gas heated 3 lever (1 lever off in photo). Came from a cafe in Wanganui. Think the Ilatians working on the power projects in the 50s brought it out. Was working until replaced by a VBM. Plans are to reco it. Will leave the body as is as chrome pretty good. Any ideas on exact model and date? ;D

been busy but back into it now. Have had six new screw threads (wurth product) inserted into the boiler where it fits to the frame. Had a new stainless steel cover plate made to fit over the hole where the element would go if it had them ( gas heated) The second dip in citrus acid was great. Used a large esky/ chilly bin. Kept the water warm for 24 hours.I will refit the boiler to the frame this week.

That black build up sure looks like scale to me... If that last picture was in fact an after shot Id suggest you soak it again (annoying but you may as well do the best you can while its stripped right?)

    Re: vintage gaggia 3 group

    how did the restoration go?
I have a similar machine of about the same era unrestored.
I have some tools that have been made up to service and some new parts also.
I used to use a 2 group like yours in a cafe 15 years ago and it was great but top large nut on group could have done with a tighten as it used to leak a little up in to the top part of the group.
You can still get racks springs pinions i believe or at least you could a few years back.
    cheers
    john

see attachment for scan of brochure for my model which is a 4 group.

    Wow *:o

    [Edit: added this comment]

I would even say that I like that Gaggia as much - if not more - than Kees van der Westens speedster.
Maybe it doesnt have the up-to-date tech, but in its day it was probably up there.

Do you have any idea on the total number produced?

What a beauty, both the restored single and the 3 group in process

Love the retro 50s - 60s styling on these machines, to hell with modern gear I want me one of those single groups
