    Chapter 2 begins.....

    Exciting news!

The Faema arrived yesterday and the pix just dont do it justice. Its stunning!

There will be some (very minor) mods.

These guys dont have an internal pump, so I have Pedro on the job and Bernard Peters (Bombora) has already supplied filtration for it. Also, the concept of thermosiphon restriction had not been considered when it was built- so there will be some scace work and a set of custom thermosiphon restrictors.

There was no such thing as auto fill or for that matter anti-vac valves in 65 when this was built. My thoughts are that manual fill will be fine and Im reluctant to tap the boiler to install an anti-vac valve as this will take from the originality of the machine- so well see how we go.

We have a gorgeous cart for it to go on and a new Talk Coffee home with much more space for machines/training. Also in the pipeline, a new, unique and really exciting initiative for Melbourne CSers in the pipeline as well....

I am hoping the move to new digs will be complete for a November opening....

Re: A new Talk Coffee story....teaser

Time for an update on this story...

The machine has been up on the bench for about a month...

After it arrived, I purchased a motor and pump from Pedro, filtration goodies from Bombora and employed the plumber to provide water...These babies run red hot so got some custom 2.5mm thermosiphon restrictors as a starting point and installed them as well...

Wiring to bring 15A to the machine was completed and all of of the above goodies were installed and we finally fired up the machine...to receive a shower!

It had been screwed back together and nothing had been pressure tested. So began a methodical process of checks to reveal that a whole heap of gaskets and O-rings were AWOL...Another big purchase of bits and pieces from pieces from Pedro allowed for leaks to be attended to.

When we fired the machine again, next job was to set pump pressure using the trusty p/f gauge...only to find the next problem. The groups pressurised to 4 bar and that was it....

About a day of experimentation swapping in and out bits of old and new has provided one operational group today and I fired it and have played with the old mercury pressure switch to get a boiler pressure around 0.8 bar.

I pulled one shot today and on the palate, all of the grief has been worth it. It was absolutely sublime and from here, things can only get better. We are one spring away from a second operational group.

There is a huge quantity of available steam and the wand porting is good. This is probably the quickest machine I have used, but the microfoam was great!

Next job will be to get the scace onto it and work from there....

This has at times been hugely frustrating, but I see an end and a whole heap of enjoyment to come.

I hope to have it up and running if anyone wants to pop through on Saturday morning...

    OK, Ill admit it...

Every now and then I come to this thread just to take another look at the Faema. Sorry it wasnt as fully restored as meant to be, but on the positive side, Im sure its given you the opportuity to get better acquainted with her.

You know I love the K10s Chris, though one day it might be nice to have a restored retro grinder next to this baby. ;)

    Cheers!

Re: A new Talk Coffee story....teaser

The final piece of the 1965 Faema e-61 puzzle fell into place yesterday.

I had the pleasure of a visit from Professor Peter Cairis and we diagnosed a very sad and tired mercury pressure switch which for the moment has been retired . In due course, well rebuild it, pimp it to be even more accurate than the Sirai which is now doing the job and then reinstall it.

We have Scaced the machine and know what its up to now. The outputs are pretty impressive and its very stable after the requisite warm up time.

Ill be at the shed between about 10 and 1pm tomorrow and Saturday (2-3 Jan). Coffee will be complimentary for any CSers who would like to visit and see this beautiful, old machine in action.

At the same time, all of our our demo and most of our display display equipment is for sale. Further details: http://coffeesnobs.com.au/YaBB.pl?num=1163933911/4#4

I have just added an old grinder to keep the Faema company...I reckon that the K10 will continue to do the work though. From what I can ascertain, these date back to the mid-60s 8-)

Must stop looking at shiny things ::)

Is it just me or is the entire back of that grinder appear to be all motor and nothing else??

Im jealous, that is sooo funky retro cool to go with that Faema

I thought Miss Silvia took up bench space with Rocky, the BF would go mad if I came home with something that size and told him all it does is grind coffee...

Can this thread get any better :o

That grinder will look soooo good next to the faema - if only it was up to K10 standard and could be used in unison with the machine. Oh well in the end no matter how good something looks if it doesnt perform the task to the level required.
While you are in rebuild mode maybe you could work out how to put the workings of the K10 inside the retro grinder ;)
