Behmor Brazen - Winner SCAE 2014 Best New Product.

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
    Hot off the press...

The Behmor Brazen has just won the "Best Coffee Related Product or Machine" at the SCAE (Specialty Coffee Association Europe) World of Coffee in Rimini, Italy.

This is the the same pre-production 220v/240v Brazen that we had at the Melbourne International Coffee Expo last month.

The journey has been a long one for the 220v Brazen and there have been a lot of small changes to the workings to ensure that when it's finally released here it will be best in class by a mile.

This SCAE award goes to show Behmor is right on track with this electronic pourover machine, congrats to Joe Behm for all his hard work and hair pulling on this project over the last few years.

We are hopeful to finally land them later in the year, when we do we will be sure to let everyone know!

Geez Andy, do you have to hang the carrot on such a long pole?
Words like "hopeful" "finally" and "later" only add to the anguish of us CoffeeSnobs!
However, I am sure that all Joe's "hair pulling" and "hard work" will be well worth the wait.

Sorry about your anguish Kevo, I too feel your pain.

I loved the Brazen this time last year, the small tweaks mean that the usability and stability are even better than before. We held off on landing the Brazen last year as there were a few things that we thought could be improved and thanks to working with a very receptive company we have again prodded to make the best even better (although I'm sure Joseph swore at me profusely initially).

    Hi Andy

Any update on a 240v version of the Brazen? It's been ages now!! I see they are now selling an updated version, the Brazen Plus in the US now.

    Many thanks!

We had the 220v prototype of the brazen plus here 12 months ago.... It's taken that long to get Australian certification but now that's done the factory will schedule the first 220/240v soon.

Thanks Andy. Thought it sounded closer to release last year, but great tend to forget about the red tape that can go with it!!
Really look forward to hearing exciting news of its Ozzie debut soon!!

I agree with Crema_Lad - I can't wait to give this machine a try! I finally joined coffee snobs to find out more about this machine! Looking forward to it, Andy.

The factory has started building our model right now which should mean this side of mid-year availability in AU!
(the process is build / test / freight / customs clearances etc then they will be in BeanBay)

More details when I know 'em and as always... it doesn't exist until I can touch them!

don't exist until I can touch them!

After they land we will know the pricing, the AU$ is a shocker at the moment and the brewers, freight, duty and GST will all be in a converted US$ to AU$ amount.

I really won't quote a price or a date until I can touch them... but you can see the trend of our dollar at the moment below.
(put simply, the lower the $ the higher the price for everything imported)

Live (well it was live when the picture was taken yesterday) from the factory test bench, the Australian Behmor Brazen build goes through some rigorous testing including high voltage to earth, chassis tests, temperature calibration and other general build testing.

    AustralianBrazenTests.jpg

I don't know of another company that puts their gear through the level of testing that Joseph Behm does. He pays a premium to get it right before he will put his company name on the gear. Not only does the factory that builds the equipment run tests but a high percentage of them are then sampled by a third party company who provides us with a written report on a second round of testing which covers everything from build, components and right down to packaging and instructions.

The Brazen build is complete, testing is nearly complete and the whole lot will go in the container late this week heading for here!

Exciting times ahead for for everyone that wants a repeatable, configurable, one degree accurate electronic pour-over machine.

I'd like to do a side by side comparison with this and the Breville YouBrew, more thorough than the SCG guys did anyway.
Depending on the price I might buy one to do the comparison. It will be interesting to see how this is better than the YouBrew because functionally and spec-wise, they seem pretty close.

While I won't do direct comparisons, I will tout the features in the Brazen design.

I don't know of any brew device (including $20k La Marzocco's) that are accurate to plus/minus 1 degree fahrenheit. Most machines use thermocouples with +/- 2 C tolerances even though they "pretend" to be 0.1 C accurate on the PID.

The Brazen is also one of only a few brew devices that meets the SCAA Certified Home Brewer standards.
    Specialty Coffee Association of America

    http://www.scaa.org/PDF/SCAA-Certifi...er-Booklet.pdf

Part of the success of the Brazen design is that the water does not need to boil to lift it to the coffee, instead it heats overhead and uses gravity to release into the grounds. This gives more flexibility and also allows you to play with quite low brew temperatures... which for some coffees give amazing results.

You an also set the pre-soak time, this releases some water on the bed and allows the coffee to bloom... similar to a barista focusing profusely at the spout of an Egyptian kettle

The Brazen also has altitude calibration, which for most Aussies who live on our coastline makes little difference but for those up a hill it's a ripper feature.

I expect the "bang for buck" on the Brazen will also be excellent as Joseph Behm is doing all he can to ensure this is affordable in Australia, even with our crummy dollar value at the moment.

No comparison really. The YouBrew is designed for those who want an all in one better, cleverer drip filter machine. Every office should have one.

The Brazen offers us functionality and control at a completely different level to that of the Breville. I have little doubt that the results will be in the cup for we purists..

These are a CoffeeSnobs item so will be available in BeanBay once the time comes. I have no idea if Andy intends to wholesale them.

    Cheers

Wow that is crazy cheap. Cheaper than the RRP of the Breville.
I think i'll be forking out for one of these. Need to buy a roaster anyway so why not both.

    Well thank you Andy!
My new baby arrived yesterday, and found it super easy to calibrate and setup /understand the various functions.

This morning I woke up and enjoyed my first cup of coffee thanks to the AUTO feature. I like, I like !

Found it had lots more flavour than my previous French press method and a very smooth cup of coffee, lots of 'mouthfeel' if I can describe it as that.

I look forward to enjoying the consistency of coffee the Brazen will produce, whilst also having ability to customise settings based on bean roast, freshness etc.

Now just need to win the wife over to claim some prime real estate on the kitchen bench

Which type of paper filters does it use? Are these readily available at supermarkets or is it a specialty web-order thing?

This thing is awesome - when Andy said they were good, I honestly didn't expect the Brazen to be THIS good!

So much great coffee, so little effort.

It is "Given the price, how is it that there are any left in Bean Bay" good. Maybe I need a second one for the office...

    Melbroaster,

    From the manual:
    - 10 cup basket style filters work well
    - Bunn filters fit well

Sorry for the lag in replies... crazy week at the snobbery and now I find myself in Brisbane.

Ahhh yes, it was a BIG container, diagonal in the driveway as it was too big to come in straight. It was a bit of fun to empty too!

They are easy to setup. Calibrate, flush and set to 92C is good starting point until you have your own favourite settings.
The auto wake-up is a ripper feature to wake-up to.

Found it had lots more flavour than my previous French press method and a very smooth cup of coffee, lots of 'mouthfeel' if I can describe it as that.
Mouth-feel and body for sure, it has depth and richness too and better still, the same flavour right through the whole carafe as it doesn't have a heater in the base to "stew the brew".

I look forward to enjoying the consistency of coffee the Brazen will produce, whilst also having ability to customise settings based on bean roast, freshness etc.
The joy of the journey. Learning, sharing and experiencing.

    Trust me!
I'm glad you too found it awesome. You will find that the milk coffee drinkers you know will also love the BraZen as a long black with a splash of milk (how my wife drinks it by choice), far better than a bucket of warm, brown milk.

It is "Given the price, how is it that there are any left in Bean Bay" good. Maybe I need a second one for the office...
I expect a lot to end-up in offices and on desks at work. It's a small foot-print, standard power-point, easy to wash-up and the thermal carafe holds temperature for hours.

As mentioned, I came up to Brisbane last night for CafeBiz. Here is a picture of my suitcase.

    case.jpg

2 BraZen, 3kg of coffee and not many clothes. ;-)

I travel like a Coffee Snob!

Does anyone know the minimum volume the Brazen can produce? Can it do one cup like the YouBrew?

I am looking for a filter machine for the office to service about 8 people.

    Thanks

You can brew as little as you like up to the 1.2 litres maximum.

...but if there are 8 people in the office I would expect you would be doing a full brew most of the time.

The thermal carafe on it is awesome, it will hold the temperature for an hour easily without re-heating or stewing the coffee so most people will brew more than they want so they can have a second cup later.

Yep I fill mine to the 'calibration' level and add 7 measures of coffee..gives me a nice smooth 2 mugs worth! One to open my eyes the other about an 1/2 ~ 3/4 hour later to maintain systems ....the insulated carafe vs a heat pad is one of my favorite features as the coffee stays hot but does not stew. Brilliant !!

    Hi,

I'm just wondering - what's a good grind or what are people's favourite grind when using the Behmor Brazen?
