    Synesso Basket & EM6910

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight

My Pullman tamper & Synesso basket arrived today, thanks Greg :D

I found an immediate improvement in shots. I wonder how much of that is contributed by which ::)

I always do a water backflush at the end of each days brewing and today I noticed more coffee was flushed out than I ever saw without the Synesso. My guess is that the new basket is developing more pressure than the old one.

Anyone care to confirm or otherwise ;)

    Hi Rusty,

Did you notice less channelling with the better fitting tamper? That would be my guess.

That sounds like a good guess Charlie ;)

The Pullman is certainly a joy to use.

Nice to hear from you my friend :)

Good to hear Rusty and Id agree with Charlie that this is the most likely culprit, the Synesso basket shouldnt develop any more pressure than the SB one but eliminating channelling will certainly help to elevate the pressure. Whats the gauge doing?

The Synesso basket is slightly bigger than the Sunbeam so in theory your shots will be a touch richer, but the difference in capacity is only a gram or so (about 5%). See pic below, Sunbeam on left, Synesso on right. A worthwhile experiment would be to try your new tamper in your Sunbeam basket and see whether things go backward or stay the same. Go backward -> basket; stay the same -> tamper. To confirm you could use your old tamper in both baskets and see whether you notice any improvement with the Synesso over the factory one.

    Hey Rusty,

Any updates? How are things travelling after a few weeks use?

Consistency... consistency..... and I like it :D

I seem to have dose, grind, distribution and tamp pretty much nailed down, so my shots are mostly decent.

The only variation I find is when I use a new delivery of beans from my usual roaster. It takes longer than I recall with Silvia to tune them in. My guess is that I now have a set up that gets the best out of good beans and shows up the worst in not so good. Does that make sense ::) Its as if the old setup delivered a narrow band of quality whereas the new gear is able to explore the subtleties of the bean.

Somebody please tell me if Im off the planet on this theory ;)

    Cheers,

Rusty, are you updosing in the EM6910 with the synesso (3mm from the top edge? or are you using the 14g for the shot?

I am thinking about getting a pullman and a synesso for my em6910, but i need time to save and improve more... from what you are saying though I just want to buy it right now!

    Hi PW,

Im definitely updosing. *Dosing the Synesso to within 3mm of the top takes 25gm of beans *8-)

Anything less doesnt taste as good.

Slightly OT Ive been looking for something to rest my Pullman on when its having... well a rest *:)

I found an old glass paperweight that does the job without detracting from the good looks of the tamper.

Heres a shot of the pair having a rest:

Just wondering, does the Synesso basket fit the 6910 handle comfortably? There was a post about a page back, pointing to a disclaimer that the Synesso basket is not compatible with the 6910 handle O.o

Dont shoot me if Im WRONG again ;D ... but I think that only applies to the single shot Synesso basket as the disclaimer from this page:
There is a known incompatibility with this basket and the Sunbeam EM6900/6910 group handle so we do not recommend the purchase of this basket if you own this machine. Your existing Sunbeam baskets are typically almost exactly the same diameter as the Synesso unit so a tamper made for a Synesso double basket will normally fit the Sunbeam single baskets too.
does not appear on the product page for the ridged or ridgeless Synesso doubles.

    Re: Synesso Basket & EM6910

Thats right m@. I cant recall exactly now but it was something to do with the position of the ridge IIRC. I think the Synesso one is higher than the SB one so it doesnt lock in even when you push it all the way into the portafilter. The ridgeless doubles of course dont have that problem; Im not sure weve ever actually had a request for a ridged double for a 6910 but Ill check it out next time I have a 6910 pf in front of me.
