    EM6900 unresponsive, help please

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
First post...bad news. I lurched from my sleep this morning to the worst possible news. No matter how many times I pressed the power button on my trusty friend the EM6900, no lights would would come on. :o

I seems to remember wiping the buttons with a damp cloth yesterday before leaving for work but thats the onl;y possible explanation I have. Ive left it outside in the sun to see if some moistuire might evaporate out from the panel behind the buttons but would appreciate any other advice or input.

    Where are you located..

With a dead machine... Its hard to tell..

And due to teh dangers of Electricity etc Unless your qualified... Do not go poking around in teh back of a Sunbeam unit..

It could be a simple fix or a bin job; however with out first hand access... No able to offer any real advice.

    Is it plugged in?

Sorry. I had too. Standard first Help Desk question.

It may just have reached its use by date.
Even the last 6900 would be a bit old by now.

grief that would be bad news. Yes it was plugged in..I even switched it on at the wall and tried a couiple of scokets such was my desire for a morning coffee.

So theres no info on anyone having experienced my dilemma and fixing it with a simply jad of a screwdriver then?

Im in Rockhampton, is there a reliable espresso machine guru up here. Im loathe to lose it as its only 3 years old and Ive just had the collar replaced 4 months ago.

    We talking EM6900 or EM6900 ?

On the back internal panel... There will be 3 digits stamped..

willdo when I get home, hopefully its day of sunbathing will have produced miracle results. I think its an EM6900 and probably last of its breed. I think we bought it late 06. I often fantasise that Sunbeam will spontaneously offer me an upgrade to the 6910 whenever I call them about a problem...alas not yet.

wonderful news, it lives. I awoke this morning after an evening of forlorn wistful button pressing to no avail Came down this morning and hey presto the lights came on!!!!

of course this means i may never switch her off again but what the hell.

    OK the numbers.

Type 619 Model EMR6900R. Yes its red. What do you mean a referb? Is it a refurbished model?

interestingly the single cup button no longer works. I reckon it must be a problem with the circuit board behind the buttons. Looks like a pig to get to, anyone any experience of negotiating the tangled intestines of an EM6900?

R is for Refurb *8-) And in the case of the EM6900 I would rather a refurb than a standard one.. As they were upgraded and closer to the EM6910.. So dont cry... :)

I want the 3 digits that are stamped into the black warning label that is affixed to the inner rear cover.

The control panel is not fixable.... :(

If ya do ya research and search CS correctly you will see that Matrix and Myself have posted lots on the EM6910 and the guts are the same. Pics galore..

However, as some one found out the other day... Electricity can kill and it is all 240V so dont do it..

I say dont, unless your qualified and your posts to date; do not suggest you an Electrical person.

The R on the end does denote its a red one.

The 6910 at work had a circuit board replaced when it was in for its collar change.
The tech showed me a burn mark at one of the solder joints.
That explained the smell Id noticed previously for a few days.

OK fair enough, Ill have to send you the three digits when I get back but I genuinely couldnt see a three digit number anywhere but on the back.

Any idea how much a new control panel would cost, and of course the services of an electrical person.

so is R for Red or Refurb then? I mean even I can tell its red but referb, that would be an unexpected bonus!

In your case, being outside warranty, you should ask Sunbeam the location of your nearest "Authorised" repairer.
Only a handful of Sunbeam Agents have been trained to repair the 69xxs.

Give them a call and ask for a quote.

It also is for REFURB *:-? *Some might be shocked.. But it is FACT....

The earlier units that failed were sent back, rebuilt and upgraded and then released back onto teh market.. *Model was added R and painted RED... *

If you remember the RED ones only came out some time after the standard model... *Refurbs take time. * In addition the biggest issue the RED ones have is the sometimes poor prep and sanding prior to the red paint being applied.. *Just lift the top cup tray and the corners give them away... In most cases.

As stated before... A EM6900R is much better than an EM6900....

very true, the paint is slowly flaking where the cup tray vibrates. Ill bell up the local Sunbeam man, but I fear the worst up here in Rockhampton. I never really used the single cup button much anyway!

Many thanks for the insights AM and TG.

Sparkys 07 32627129 are the only Sunbeam Agents have been trained to repair the 69xxs in QLD... Just down the road from me.. Some parts are available to teh general public but not all.

They are good, but SB have also started to restrict what parts the public can buy..

Why, because unlike Bunnings etc... They dont come with a warning or a sign on the parts bay that states; to be fitted by a licensed person only. * Sunbeam and others are taking a risk management approach... *If a part was sold and Mr public fitted and got hurt... Sunbeam and the agent would be culpable..

    AM..

PS. I keep telling them.. You want to save on the padlocks on ya trash bin... Give me a key *;) :D ;D :o ::) :-?

PPS. Only joking... But have been tempted *;D

PPpS. Still looking for a steam pump and group handle

As TG said.. Only SOME have Authorisation to do work on the EM6910...

Have no doubt they perform some Sunbeam work.. But the EM6910 is a special arrangement.

Am aware of a number that take on the work ... But if its a warranty or other issue... If not performed by the Authorisation agent... Then you could in effect breach warranty..

Remember you have 5 years on teh pump/s.. But until ya provide those 3 digits.. Can not advise.

crikey thatd be a bit rich. List a repairer on your own website, you call them, get the machine serviced by them and by doing so it invalidates your warranty. Someone should knock these guys over the head with a faulty EM6900 until they make sense.

Yep... Would like to think the Agent would get a kick first ;)

But as TG and I have said.. Not all agents are equal and it is an issue across Australia.

There is one here on the south side that recommends a Steam thermoblock and collar every 12 months ??? I am also aware that they charge a bit !!! more than most of the others as well.

    OK...

April 2009 was the date of refurb... Only 18mths old...

Thus can only assume it was last of the stock or a discount place obtained and on sold as they were well into the EM6910 by then.

It should have the latest Collar and a few other EM6910 bits...

Where did you get it form ???

Na just been around for a while... OLD man stuff... Those who have looked death in the eye and survive on more than one occasion... Tend to remember things :-)

Most SB products have the same code... Thus it is easy to work out and easy for them to apply..

Number of weeks and the year... * *However this year it may change *;D Easy way is to add and extra digit.

Lazarus has fully repaired himself and today all buttons work perfectly ;D I think if there is a message here for anyone else its dont slosh water all over the buttons at the top no matter how coffee encrusted they are. Maybe its just that the rubber seals inside perish with age? Failing that maybe she just wanted a rest, ad=fter all shes done pretty hard work since 2006 and even survived 2 years in Ethiopia at 3,000 metres ASL.
