    Lelit Combi - Help needed

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
I just wanted to share my experiance/thoughts regarding my lelit combi

after owning a sunbeam 6910 for over 9 months I really struggled to get a decent coffee from it yes it was fine to drink , i tried everything ,but the sunbeam did not like me at all

then along came lelit I just realised I had wasted nine months of my coffee drinking life :(

just the pure pleasure of getting a fine shot and silky smooth milk the lelit gives me is soooo addictive

the good thing is I now drink 3 to 4 day to make up for lost coffee

but I do have ONE delema Im am now Hooked and wanting more

    my question to fellow CSs

    a) keep the lelit and make the baby work
    b) sell the lelit and upgrade while she is still less than a week old
to minimise my losses and get a bigger machine with more bling and grunt

If you can afford to why not? lots of friendly sponsors on this site would be happy to help you choose a good HX machine, and I bet the LeLit would move pretty quick in the classified section. ;)

The same goes for espresso machine upgrades as camera upgrades..
The mistake (imo) you made with your cameras is the same for your coffee machine.
Dont buy a 400D and then upgrade to a 450D . Make a serious upgrade from a 400D to maybe a 550D at least and THEN make a serious upgrade to a 5DMKII.
Dont take baby steps. If you have the money (which you clearly do.. as you have a 5D) then make the big step up into HX.

If youre thinking of upgrading to a Rocky Silvia combo *or any other single boiler then youre wasting your time. If you upgrade make it worth while - ie. HX machine and K3T or similar.

PS> so sad to see you the lelit go.. * :( * im sure itll go to a good home.

PS> let me know when youre ready to upgrade your 5D to a 1D. ;)

Hmmm, your film options are diminishing rapidly, see Kodak announced the demise of Kodachrome the other day. :(

Maybe you should contact your local sponsors? I am sure theyll be happy to fire up a demo HX so you can taste the difference in the cup yourself.

p.s. Im a film guy myself, and still very happy with the available options.

    HI Hung,

Sounds like you may have acted in haste when you purchased? Alternately, perhaps you were not well guided through the pros and cons of your choice and the characteristics of the class. You sell now and you have a massive depreciation rate. One thing though is its a good time to sell as there is no stock in Sydney and we are out til next week. You would lose the GST component + perhaps a hundred more as the machine has been used? :-/

You will find it easier with a well chosen HX machine, but there is no reason you shouldnt get an excellent result out of your present machine.

    Good luck either way.

TC has called it well; then again, you need to ask your self... *Will you ever be happy with what ever you get...

Rembering that HX is not the end of the road and that there is always more bling *;D

My gut says - Stick with what you got... *And concentrate on understanding Coffee and what makes it tick...

A better machine will not always give better coffee - you need to be at one with all the variables... *

Even the 6910 (you struggled with ) can give great coffee if you treat it right...

I would suggest that maybe you did not fully understand the unit; or maybe even your current machine... * It takes time and patience - You rush = You loose $$$ and also get poor coffee.

Count to 110 and breath with the moon and the sun it all about getting the phases and the balance... *You know you can do it *:o

Yeah, dont rush - give the Lelit a chance. *

In 12 months time youll probably get the same amount for it as if you tried to sell it tomorrow. *Besides, in 12 months time the bling will be even better, but as AM says, it wont necessarily mean youre going to get a better cup.

In the meantime, enjoy the coffee and some windowshopping!

There is as much chance that this happened as there is of George Clooney winning the next WBC using stale pod coffee and a latte art stencil.

Im afraid the diagnosis here is clear. Hung, you have Upgraditis and there is no cure. The good news is that the symptoms are treatable at your local site sponsor using retail therapy or a trade-in procedure.

In fact, for the next few weeks, we will happily accept trade-ins of good quality single boiler machines (eg lelit or silvia) on HX or twin boiler machines. No appointment required.

    Dr Charlie.

Re: Lelit Combi - Help needed

I sympathise hung. My forays into snobdom followed a similar route: off-the-shelf appliance type -> single boiler dual purpose -> HX

Im afraid Dr. Charlie is right - you have upgraditis and youve got it bad. There is no cure as he mentions. Ive been eyeing off the Izzo Duetto Alex whenever I venture to Cuppacoffee and those inconsiderate CSers who kept mentioning their conical grinders.

He has pronounced the correct treatment - the Giotto I bought has greatly relieved the itch and I havent experienced any rash buying decisions for some time now.

Maybe upgrade now (you know you wanna) while the Lelit is still relatively new and you can get a good price for it. You could refine your technique on the Lelit but your needs have increased.

I should add that I struggled with my single boiler machine for about 9 months but hit gold when I bought the Giotto. After that, I realised what I was doing wrong in my coffee prep with the single boiler.

Like I said earlier Hung, if you can afford to, just do it, you know you wont be happy until you have the ultimate shiny espresso monster sitting on your bench, with an appropriate top of the range grinder of course. ;)

Ive used a Sunbeam at work extensively over the last 4 years or so and at home have an HX machine.

From my experience, what you said about struggling to get a decent coffee out of the Sunbeam could be many factors.
Assuming the machine was working properly it could have been stale beans, an inadequate grinder or the operator.
The Sunbeam can make excellent coffee.

Now that youve spent money on the Lelit, I recommend you stick at it and get your moneys worth.

When (and if) you find it can no longer keep up with you, that would would be the time to upgrade.

However, if you can live with the monetary loss, then make yourself feel better and go get yourself a "Canon 5DMK2" equivalent coffee machine.

No use crying over split milk. ;)

One must learn from ones mistakes or else one is doomed to keep reliving them.

Hung I was surprised to read your post just a few hours after our conversation telling me how much you enjoyed the coffee from the Lelit.

A good thing you sent your non-coffee drinking wife (I had a laugh) in to pick up the coffee and other bits - otherwise if it were you I think you would have walked out with an Alex Duetto! ::)

Another good thing about the Lelits is that if and when you decide to upgrade, as long as its been cared for, you wont need to trade it in - it will sell on CS in a heartbeat.

Hope youre enjoying the coffee! :)

Re: Lelit Combi - Help needed

I wouldnt do anything too rash right away... My parents have got a single group ex-commercial (something Spanish, cant remember what it is) with a 5 odd litre boiler, HX etc. and I really cant taste that much repeatable difference in my coffees on the combi, and cleanup/production time for one or two drinks isnt THAT different between the two, it really only takes an extra minute or two.
If youre itching to spend some money on coffee improvement, why dont you take a barista course? Get a good roaster? PID your combi? Get a custom Pullman tamper? I reckon doing this sort of thing will give you much better in-cup improvement than blowing cash on another machine so soon after getting the first..
I find it very hard to believe that ANYONE could have outgrown a decent single boiler machine after half a kilo of beans!!
