Advice on DIY fix for 5 year old Rancilio Silvia

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
Ive been a long time reader of coffee snobs, in fact you guys are the ones that helped me decide on the Silvia, and what a great choice! I dont post much, just peruse the many nuggets of gold.

Unfortunately my poor Silvia is not working any more, no water comes out the group head or from the bypass into the drop tray. I would like to have a crack at fixing it myself if possible. Hopefully one of you can offer some advice on how to go about this.

Originally I thought the pump was on the way out, but water is clearly making its way into the boiler, as the steam wand can be used when at temperature. Also, when running with the steam wand off you can see water recycling back into the reservoir.

This led me to believe the solenoid was busted, which I still havent ruled out. I have pulled that apart, giving everything a clean. Ive also had the machine running with the solenoid coil removed, water made its way into the drip tray as expected, so water is at least making it that far...

Could this still mean the solenoid is broken? Where does the water go if that is the case, into the drip tray or back into the reservoir?

Im happy to pull the entire machine apart if needs be, anything to get my Silvia going again :)

Does anyone after reading this far have ideas on where to go from here?

    Cheers,

    Christian

When you activate the group, do you hear the solenoid click?

If yes then the machine is blocked, either in the valve base or in the boiler

If no then solenoid coil is dead

Hi Tek, thanks for the response.

I dont think I can hear the click. To further investigate I unhooked the coil completely and tested resistance with a multimeter, was completely open circuit. So fingers crossed its the coil.

I have a new one from coffeeparts on the way, was about $30 so definately worth a shot. Should be here monday so I will update soon.

    Cheers,

    Christian
