Combined Rancilio espresso and grinder machine

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
    Howdy CSers,

Yesterday I was at the Prahran market. *My eyes nearly popped out when I saw a Rancilio machine which had both the espresso machine (Silvia) and the grinder (Rocky) built into the one unit.

Has anyone got any information on this 2-in-1 product? *Its almost like the folks at Rancilio have just combined the Silvia and the Rocky together into one. *What do you call this machine? *Miss Rocky? * ;D

Were both units separate (i.e. side by side) on a stainless steel double drawer unit underneath....?

That has been available for a while O/S - not sure about in Oz...

    Hi JavaB,

No its not the two separate units with the stainless shelf and two side by side drawers.

This Rancilio unit was both a grinder and an espresso machine combined as one, i.e. the sheet metal enclosed both together, so its not even like a siamese twin, where theres two distinct parts joined together but a single unit with two functional areas.

Kinda hard to describe and ****** do not allow photography inside their shop.

This is most bizarre, I cannot find this unit on Rancilios website.

They just have the Silvia and the Rocky as separate units

    http://www.rancilio.com/rancilio/prodotti.jsp?id_language=3&id_category=26

Ill give the Essential Ingredient people a call to find out more about that machine.

    Stay tuned.

No its real. But I would never like to have a grinder and machine in one. The heat from the machine will adversely effect the grinder and coffee.

Yes, Id agree there Wushoes. The "combined" unit on the base is fine..... but built into the same case heating of the beans is a big problem.... plus if one half fails the whole unit is out of action until repaired.....

Might save some bench space.... but I dont believe it is worth it.

Re: Combined Rancilio espresso and grinder machine

Ive got an all in one case machine and never had a problem as I only put beans in as I used them. a 200g hopper makes sure of that. Id also suggest that even if you have them seperately, then if one fails the whole lot is out of action. I cant make espresso without my grinder, and I dont grind if theres no machine to use it in, so I think this is a bit of a moot point.

Yes, if the machine had issues you could still do french press, moka pot, etc, but its just not the same & I know that personally, I wont bother.

Built in tampers are good if you do a mid tamp...otherwise theyre absolutely useless.

All Mazzer grinders whether its a Mini or a Robur ship without it on. So I left it off on mine.

You may like to read the thread at http://coffeesnobs.com.au/YaBB.pl?num=1163737834 which discusses the Lucy.

The link to Rancilios site is at http://www.rancilio.com/rancilio/prod_model.jsp?id_model=23&id_language=2&id_catego ry=11

Its a pain you cant find it on the normal site!

Out of interest how much did they want for the one at the market?

    Gday Greg,

There wasnt a price tag on the unit and I didnt ask either.

I wasnt all that impressed with the Lucy, quite honestly. I turned the knobbly black plastic steam knob just to see how it felt like, and whilst it turned smoothly, the plastic knob wobbled around like it was put on off center. It wasnt loose, but as you turned it, the visual of an offcentered, off axis knob didnt inspire confidence of build quality.

Kinda like old Ferraris - they may go fast, but the fit and finish aint great. ::)

Re: Combined Rancilio espresso and grinder machine

Just rang ************* and the price of the Lucy is $1416 tax inclusive. Mod edit- Suppier name AGAIN deleted by mods. We have sponsors who pay to keep CS alive...A little consideration please * >:( :-?

Their Silvia pricing is $948 so a bit dearer than from our CS site sponsors.

I would imagine that if I had to buy an espresso machine Id get it from our site sponsors because they have really put a lot of time and effort in helping so many people on this forum.

As a sponsor, I appreciate that Lawrance...Its fine to talk about the machine, just no free plugs for non-sponsors please- even if they are rip-off merchants...Sponsors pay a fee to keep CS running...;)

Oops, sorry! *I wasnt intending to plug the competition, actually quite the opposite, i.e. show that they are quite expensive. *

Apologies, I was only just trying to close the loop on Greg Pullmans question. * :-/

I guess I should have just mentioned the price without mentioning the shops name. * :-X Sorriee!! :-[ :-[

Thanks Tempest for answering my question, and I appreciate what you were trying to achieve. Dont worry, I inadvertently trod on a few toes in my early CS days before I got the feel for where that line in the sand lay, but the mods have to do their job to keep CS running. Great to have you on board! ;)
