How to clean a Rancilio Rocky Grinder

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
My grinder is starting to get quite oily and jams sometimes - I figure it needs a good clean. I also want to clean it as I want to run some decaf beans through it today and dont want caffeinated oils mixed in.

My wife read something suggesting that running rice grains through the grinder is good for cleaning it, however I am cautious about putting anything through it except what is stated in the manual.

    Any thoughts?

NEVER put rice in your grinder!!!!!!

There would be more than a good chance of damaging your grinder.

Try breaking a roasted coffee bean with your teeth and its easily done.
If you try breaking a grain of rice and theres a good chance youll break a tooth (dont try it).

Rice is a lot harder than roasted coffee beans.

yeah well thats what I thought - but what *can* I do to clean it? or should I just run through some decaf beans before making a coffee?

It is rather oily in the top feeder container.

    It is 3 months old.

If you dont want to pull the grinder apart for cleaning you can buy a proper cleaning material like Grindz. Some of the CS sponsors stock it.

How much caffeine do you think you could possibly pick up from running the decaf beans through the grinder now?

Are decaf beans 100% caffeine free?

no but they have a lot less. I thought it would be a good opportunity to learn more about making coffee without ruining my sleep for the night.

It takes about 10 mins to give the Rocky a good clean, all you need is a couple of screwdrivers, a pencil, a small brush and a vacum cleaner. Theres some youtube vids showing you how to do it.

I clean mine out every 2kgs of beans that go through it...usually about once a month

its an easy a straight forward process doesnt require too much skill or tools. try this site http://coffeegeek.com/guides/cleanrocky

there is also a chemical you can use called grindease (i think or at least something like that), havent used it though, but havent heard the most brilliant feedback- most just pull it apart and clean it.

Most important thing, when you clean it, remember where your setting was!! ;)

So back to my first question...How much caffeine do you think you could possibly pick up from running the decaf beans through the grinder now?

My guess would be little to none.
