    Best machine $500 - $1000?

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
Im wondering what coffee machine most people think is the best value for between $500 and $1000? I have a Rancilio Rocky grinder and a Breville Ikon coffee machine. I want to upgrade to a better machine - is the Silvia still considered the best machine in this price range - I know when I was researching in 2008 a lot of people thought so.

If it’s going to be less than $1K then definitely go for the Silvia.
Nemox Fenice is ok too (like the Lelit Combi but no grinder) although the build quality is not as good and non-commercial components.

To get something better you’d have to spend around twice as much e.g. VBM Piccolo or Diadema Perfetta.

Also noticed that the Silvia’s seem to be in stock again at most places.

I am in Brisbane and Id like to buy locally if possible. I know where I can get a new Silvia for $850. I just wanted to check if its still the best machine in this price range, or has been overtaken by soomething else.

Depending on ya grinder and who uses the unit... Many would say a great buy at that $$$

I am not a big fan and if ya have to get a grinder etc then as a first decent machine there are other options and some have teh grinder built in.. Perfect solution = NO But a good start..

    See teh sponsors.

IMO the Ikon makes remarkably good coffee with unpressurised baskets, and when paired with a decent grinder--Rocky qualifies.

While the Silvia is a much more robust machine and has much better steaming, Id be checking the change in coffee quality to ensure it is really an upgrade.

I cant really comment on the best machine available in this price bracket, however I did the upgrade from Breville Ikon to Miss Silvia around 10 months ago.

Silvia is a heavy duty machine, and capable of making great coffee in the right hands. That said, she isnt perfect and requires a lot of time and effort to learn and maintain properly. I have gotten close to trading her in for a 6910 on several occasions, but have hung in there and am getting some pretty good results now.

The major criticism I (still) have is of the small water reservoir and tiny drip try. I feel the Silvia is a good quality boiler/group etc. shoehorned into a small and very basic housing. If you are able to find a good quality 2nd hand unit (like the one suggested by maheel), you may be happier in the long run.

    Good Luck!

I had had enough of things that were designed to impress in the shop, but not designed to last...(so you would have to come back and buy another one)

For my money if you want a machine that can make great coffee and will last a long time...then get a Silvia, I dont think she is as temperamental as some seem to.

If you dont mind the shorter lifespan, and want to be able to brew and steam more or less simultaneously a 6910 would do the job.

OTOH, since you already have a reasonable unit in the Ikon, maybe you would be better waiting a bit longer and going direct to a HX machine, or one of the other super single boiler machines which can be found for not much more,....if you are patient and watch the for sale section.

    Re: Best machine $500 - $1000?

    Thanks All

I have been pretty happy with the Ikon, but the first one only lasted 14 months before it stopped working - it sounded as if the pump had gone. Id got it from the Breville Seconds shop for $180 and as it was out of warranty I didnt bother with seeing if I could get it fixed. I went to the Seconds shop and got another one for $220 this time.

They arent making Ikons any more though, so if this one lasts 14 months, I probably wont be able to get another. Also, I was a bit disappointed that the first one only lasted 14 months. I hear stories of Silvias still going strong after 10 years.

However, it seems that people dont rave about Silvias as much as they used to. I would love a heat exchanger machine, but dont feel I can justify the cost - unless I knew it would still be working well in 20 years time, and no-one can guarantee that.

The Ikon uses a very similar pump to most other reasonable quality espresso machines Judy, so if the pump in your latest acquisition fails, Im sure you could get someone to shoehorn a replacement Ulka style pump for you for less than a $100 all up. The rest of the machine is pretty simple and now that you have a spare, parts shouldnt be an issue... ;)

I guess the Silvia has a bit more competition than it used to, with high quality Dual Purpose Single Boiler machines from makers such as Diadema, VBM, etc.... Even the SB EM6910 has probably had some influence on the overall numbers.

    All the best... :)

    Re: Best machine $500 - $1000?

    Thanks Mal

Im afraid I did what I usually do when cheap Sunbeam/Breville things break down - I threw it in the wheelie bin in disgust. It never seems worth it to me to try to get them repaired as the repair costs are usually more than the price of a new one.

If I were to spend a bit more than $1000, what machine would you recommend? Id prefer new to second-hand.Im happy with the Ikon except that it breaks *quickly like most Breville/Sunbeam products *- my sister also had a problem with her Ikon but as it was still under warranty it was replaced, so Im not the only one with this has happened to.

So Id like a basic machine, but one that would last a lot longer than the Ikon.

In terms of new machines there’s a bit of a gap between the Silvia and the next step up.
You have dual purpose single boiler such the VBM Piccolo (~$1500) or Diadema Perfetta (~$1700). In terms of HX the entry level is the Nuova Simonelli Oscar (~$1300) and most other are over $2K.

If the Ikon is still working then you may want to be patient and look out for something in the Hardware For Sale section. In general most of the equipment there has been well maintained.

Many of our excellent sponsors are always having good value deals.

    Hi Caffeine Junky

Ill keep using the Ikon until it passes away, but Id just like to have an idea of what to get once it does. Ill look into those 3 machines youve mentioned - thanks.
